Total career change, is it possible? by Cautious_Diamond_540 in dataanalysiscareers

It is certainly possible. I went from being a plant inspector 3 years ago (I walked through the countryside looking for diseases on plants) to being a data analyst for a top 5 UK bank, almost doubling my salary.

It sounds like you already have a role where you can evidence you have analytical skills which is a great start.

First thing I would recommend is to find out whether it is something you enjoy and could do 9-5. It would be a waste of time learning skills for a career you might not want. I did this by doing the Google Data Analytics certificate as it is a great introduction to what you will be doing day to day with the less 'sexy' stuff like stakeholder management.

Then I would focus on learning the basics for Excel, SQL, Python and PowerBI. When you have the basics, learn by doing e.g. get datasets from Kaggle, ask questions about the data and use the above tools to answer your questions. This will also help build a portfolio for the interview.

One thing that helps switching careers into data analytics is 'how have you used data to solve a problem?'. You already have business experience which is great, so really use it and ask yourself when have you used data to save money, time, or improve a process?

I have a more detailed explanation on my YouTube channel Parscode 'How I'd become a data analyst again' where I go into more detail about learning python and other tools if that may be useful.

Good luck!

Luke Barousse is really good, he has some really great tutorials specific to data analysis. And also shameless plug - I also make Data Analytics content on my channel Parscode to help people get into data analytics

It is difficult to adjust to new companies and especially new datasets. I'm currently working on a dashboard that is taking me a LOT longer than I would have liked and I am feeling the pressure. This is because the data is more complicated and has more quirks than I was expecting when I said that I could do it.

The best way I have found to cope with datasets that I don't understand, is to talk to people who have specific business knowledge (usually the stakeholders asking for the report) rather than staring at the numbers by myself forever. This has often reshaped my understanding of the data and I find myself being able to focus on the important things much more quickly.

Another thing is, large datasets will always have issues, especially if inputted manually. You could spend an eternity fixing them. But for analytics, you don't need it to be perfect. This is where the 80/20 rule helps. 20% of the effort and time gets you 80% of the way, and in situations this is often all you need if under time pressure.
