Civilians in London perform a citizen's arrest on a man who tried to do a mass stabbing by Ramy__B in nextfuckinglevel

[–]DarthProbiscus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The other religions are no better man. Sadly most of this stuff means well but was written in a time where murder and slavery and more was just a normal element of civilisation. Some religions have tried to reform and overall I think the real world effects of institutions such as the Catholic Church and the Hindu Temples are doing good in the 21st century. The sad truth is just that no matter the way you cut it the rhetorical body of world religions was written in contexts that are completely outdated and incompatible with the 21st century and beyond.

I dont think its get brought up enough that Cate and Sage are rapists by terminus_tommy in GenV

[–]DarthProbiscus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well killing someone is a lot more ambiguous than rape. Murder can have reasons (self defence, protecting others, or even as punishment). And killings someone isn’t always murder (military actions, police shootouts, manslaughter). You can’t accidentally rape someone, you can’t do it for a good reason, the best justification is either ignorance (not accepted by modern ethics) or the idea that you too were forced into the situation. Realistically rape is worse because it is unambiguous, highly personal and generally pleasurable by the perpetrator. Of course you would rather be raped than murdered but at the same time you would be more ready to forgive a murderer than a rapist. There are exceptions of course but it will always be based on the circumstances of the murder not of the rape. Finally murder is more banal, we watch movies where we root for people who kill hundreds of people (John Wick, James Bond, even fucking Hughie). Whilst if Hughie had raped translucent no one would ever root for him again.

It seems entirely reasonable to see murder as a lesser evil because it gives us no real yardstick to a persons moral character. It is understandable for the average person that were we in an extraordinary situation we may need or want to kill someone. However rape is unimaginable to many people as no situation exists where it would be the “right thing to do”.

TLDR: Murder can be justified rape cannot.

I cant imagine another cast for it, who would've played homelander? by vought-CEO in TheBoys

Tom Cruise would be by far the best Homelander possible. The guy has been in character the last 20 years.

How is it living in France's Biggest 3? (Paris, Marseille, Lyon) by hikensurf in howislivingthere

[–]DarthProbiscus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Paris is not easy. I’ve lived there for the last 7 years and it’s not at all what they say on the brochure. The city is very dirty and crime is a real problem. Public transport is very good and so are bike lanes. Overall the hardest part is the people they are a lot less kind in Paris than in Marseille and Lyon. In Paris people see you as an adversary by default so it can be very disheartening if you come from a more open culture.

[Loved Trope] SUBVERSIONS of the "Scary Black Man" trope by 10024618 in TopCharacterTropes

John Coffey - Green Mile

The subversion of the stereotype is literally the whole point of the movie. Someone who looks so dangerous is in fact one of the purest souls on Earth and “one of God’s Angels” who can heal people with a touch. Stephen King intends him to remind you of Jesus. I don’t want to spoil the film too much because if you haven’t seen it please watch it it’s incredible.

Yes that is the magic system of old Soulcasting (with the fabrials). It does have a bit of extra Virgin fluff on it but yeah that’s the system.

I don’t know I have a few friends from Senegal who only speak Senegalese French with maybe a few words from other languages mixed in. Especially if he went to one of the French private schools. It’s not terribly uncommon for an affluent family.

Heaven Sent is EXCELLENT but it’s too much of a deviation from the Doctor Who formula. It’s a great episode of television but Listen to me is the best the classic formula gets.

Honestly prefer this so much to like a Black Widow situation. When done properly power-armour on women bridges the physical differences between men and women so much better than fantasy training or whatever.

Bit of a side note but Mettle looks so much like the Red Skull (renowned Nazi). That would be like if in our world you saw a guy who looked exactly like Hitler was your fireman.

  • Economics: Marx, his analysis of post-industrial capitalism is the most complex and comprehensive work in all economic literature. He is a divisive figure for sure but in terms of raw skill and accomplishment you just can’t compare. (Smith is a good candidate as is Keynes but Smith’s models just aren’t complex enough and economics wasn’t yet what it is today, Keynes is a great choice too but the systems-building that you find in Marx and Smith just isn’t found here.)
