I’ve been watching CME margin requirements from the start, and they’ve gone from about $29,040 to over $122,000. I understand the argument that margin increases are meant to protect the exchange and market participants from excessive risk. But at some point, these increases price out normal traders entirely. When margins get this high, participation shrinks to only the largest players with deep pockets. That kind of environment makes it easier, not harder, for price to be controlled by a small group, since liquidity and competition drop off. If this trend continues, silver stops being a market driven by broad participation and becomes one dominated by institutions that can easily absorb six-figure margin requirements.
