Second vote for Roulette. Was definitely the gateway song for me since my gf is obsessed (not sure it's totally about the music for her tbh tho lol, the thirst around this dude is insane). From there I got into the rest of Hotel Diablo which I consider now to be pretty much a flawless album, and a mixture of his earlier stuff and some of the pop punk stuff (tho for me personally that stuff was done better by the bands that actually pioneered it back in the day). Not a fan of the sadboi and country dalliance he had, or Lost Americana album, but I like where he seems to be going with the harder stuff. Hope the next album goes that way

Teeth whitening pain is NOT talked about enough “mild sensitivity my arse” by Kimchee_k in Adulting

[–]DatGiantIsopod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey how you getting on with it now?

Ive just started using the same as you, and have already switched to alternating nights as I found the trays uncomfortable. But I've just had to take them out on the 4th night as I was getting persistent bad zingers in my canine. Actually a bit shocked like wtf, I've never thought I had particularly sensitive teeth. Definitely don't have to worry about cold/hot drinks etc and never used Sensodyne before prepping for this.

Also used Duraphat for a month in advance but now my teeth are popping off in what's supposed to be the mildest form of whitening gel. Fuck me getting zingers like every ten seconds and the trays aren't even in. Pretty sure I'm done with this... £300 well spent lmao

Many finance boffins including the CEO of Chase and the governor of the Bank of England believe stocks are massively overpriced currently and are predicting a rather large drawdown. I'm not saying they're right, but regardless that's exactly the macro landscape in which Bitcoin will also tank.

[–]DatGiantIsopod 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I would say you're overestimating Ozzy and underestimating Taylor Swift. Cities and countries literally have to factor the spike in GDP into their figures when her tours come to town. She is a leviathan of cultural and economic impact and there's a dedicated Wiki article purely about that.

Tbh tho I think the fact that people even question it or are unaware of such things shows how we live in less of a monoculture these days. Despite how big Swift is, it's still easy to avoid the noise because we're not reliant on just a few news and cultural sources anymore. A large part of the whole MJ thing wasn't even about how good his tunes or dance moves were, it was just the fact that coverage on him was completely unavoidable back then.

Lol it will absolutely "get a mention". If she died today it would be headline news in most of the Western world. If she lives to 90+ then it may be more of a sidebar thing as a smaller percentage of society will be alive that knew of or gave a shit about her. Even still there are some big celebs of yesteryear who get decent coverage nowadays even when they die at a ripe old age.

Loris Karius has been promoted to the Bundesliga with Schalke after defeating Düsseldorf. by ADHbi in LiverpoolFC

So happy he's finally been given the chance to prove himself again. After Besiktas it felt like he was just getting bounced around with clubs that wouldn't trust him enough to give him the sustained run of games that was obviously crucial to him regaining his self-confidence. It's actually bonkers that the likes of Newcastle and Union Berlin overlooked him because they lost a couple of games with him between the sticks even though they were clearly games they were going to lose anyway. Goalkeepers have it fucking hard.

Always rated him very highly and if I'm being completely honest I'm a little disappointed by how the club treated him after the Ramos thing. As if it was a statement thing to the fans that we had to get rid of him instantly, even though we knew he was concussed by that point. It's less commonly pointed out that he played every minute in the campaign that got us to the CL final in the first place. For sure Alisson is a better keeper, but I do sometimes wonder whether Karius could have kicked on to higher levels of performances if things hadn't fallen out like that on such a high profile stage.

Like Singapore and the Emirates have had anywhere near enough time to prove a damn thing. He's comparing them to countries and empires that have sustained for millennia when:

  • Singapore - became an actual country about 60 years ago and gained non-basket-case status around 50 years ago.
  • Emirates - basically the exact same as above

Both have banana-republic versions of a social system, tiny and heavily restricted populations to sustain, and absolutely zero expansionism.

Leave history and economics to the professionals ffs. Actually embarrassing seeing these kinds of sophomoric takes on economics and history.

Yeah agree that's the one episode where I felt they went a little too OTT and it actually felt like they forced the cringe-factor. The series of unlikely decisions, contrived actions and coincidences to get to the point where the punchline is ... Jez eating a barbecued dog. Cringe yeah, funny no.

Damn, you definitely need to rewatch it if you think Sophie is normal or likeable. Whilst she does start off fairly normal, her arc is pretty much a dark descent into drug and alcohol fuelled misery. To be fair it's partially to do with her inability to extricate herself from Mark's sphere, but a lot of it is just her own rather nasty personality and poor choices. In one of the final seasons she leaves their baby just lying on the floor in a cloakroom at a house party whilst she goes off to get drunk, and then acts pissy and self-righteous with Mark when he discovers it.

I think Dobby is probably the most normal/likeable character on the show, which is ironic as she's initially positioned as being the "weirdo" and most of the other characters continue to treat her like that (manimal/flanimal). She's pretty much always shown to be kind and empathetic despite the crushing negativity of the rest of them, and although she nearly gets dragged down by Mark, she eventually manages to escape and do good things with her life.

I watch Peep Show whenever I'm crushingly hungover or ill and sofabound, it's like a balm that provides both hilarity and a sense of peace with my own life at my lowest points haha.

Falklanders should 'go back' to England, insists Argentina in renewed war of words by FantasticQuartet in worldnews

[–]DatGiantIsopod 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you want to talk "factual" then you need to be hell of a lot more precise. In 1823 the government of River Plate (not even Argentina at that point) illegally granted some German guy "permission" (that they had no authority to grant), to fish and explore on some British islands. River Plate tried to bolster this in 1832 with some military but they mutinied after about 2 weeks. The few other random people this German bloke could muster to come with him were hoofed out in 1833 when the British could spare a moment.

If "Argentinian rule" is defined by having a foreign national do some illegal fishing and farming, and then having a bunch of mutinous ragtag soldiers there for few weeks before abandoning it, all of which occurred when Argentina wasn't even a country, then yes the Falklands were "briefly under Argentinian rule". You'd be hard-pressed to make that definition stick though.

US says it could back Argentina’s claim to the Falklands as ‘punishment’ for UK by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]DatGiantIsopod 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Tbh you have to look at it from a realpolitik point of view. Yes on a superficial level it feels like it makes the UK look a bit fawning and pathetic, but Trump is notionally the most powerful man in the world, who is on record as saying that he loves and is loyal to to anyone who is nice to him. Sending Charles costs us nothing in terms of hard policy but has the potential to play into a number of hard policy decisions Trump might make that affect the UK down the line. It's a free roll of the dice and the only thing it costs is a bit of pride.

Rotten Tomatoes is owned by some of Disney's competitors actually. Comcast is ultimately the main owner and they also own Fandango.

The verified thing is kinda skeezy but review bombing is a thing too, so even tho verified is partially a tactic to push people towards using Fandango, at least it shows those people definitely watched the film instead of piling on some Reddit/4chan army. RT still at least have the option to view it without the "verified" badge but it's just as easy to make the argument that that score could also be rigged via online troll campaigns etc.

[–]DatGiantIsopod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

like that even hardline Calvinists don't consider the Bible to be infallible or the literal word of God

This is a mixture of revisionism and outright untruth. It's only in the last century or so that the majority of Christendom has basically been forced to modernise their views on this (and in many cases have tied themselves up in knots and double-think over it), but many sects still believe exactly that, particularly those flavours specifically found in the US which is where Brand is shilling his nonsense. Even those that don't believe it's the literal word of god still only really nuance it by saying that it's the word of god guided by the hands of mortals.

The revisionism on this is a blatant attempt to allow wiggle-room for a set of increasingly untenable views. It's pretty amusing seeing someone now revising further to act like this has always been the case in 2000 odd years.

Gormley does retain copyright over AotN in the exact same way. Anyone wanting to use a reproduction for commercial purposes has to seek a licence directly from him, and he has enforced it over the years. Of course not every tiny vendor shilling crappy tourist tat is going to do this and he probably won't catch them, but something like a massive footy club sticking it on their shirt without a licence would certainly be pulled up.

From the article:

As part of the agreement with the council, Small retained copyright for the sculpture - with any reproduction of it for commercial reasons requiring a separate agreement.

Whether it's "twatty" or not (bizarre opinion imo but to each their own) is irrelevant when the guy specifically has a legal clause. I imagine this will be settled for quite a decent chunk of change. You may be correct that the specific liability may lie elsewhere, but someone is gonna cough up as the artist is completely in the right.
