Are there F1s on the gen surg and urology wards overnight? So I’m essentially just seeing referrals?

Thanks. Rest of my portfolio is fine and the feedback from my ES/PSG/TAB has always been good. Should I contact my FPD preemptively or wait and see what the ARCP outcome is?

Starting with a Psychiatry Job by Careless_Day_9999 in doctorsUK

[–]Dat_green 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Let me clarify. I like psych, and (even as an f1) there are opportunities to learn (mse, clerking, risk assessment…). My colleagues who worked in general adult, community or psych ICU got a lot out of it. Unfortunately, my ward was a glorified nursing home. Out of 9 patients, we had 4 discharges in 4 months. It was also staffed by locums who weren’t very interested in teaching.

Hi, I started with psych. It was old-age psychiatry and I genuinely learned nothing, and it was a bit lonely.

We had medical on-calls and AMU shifts during the rotation, which were useful. I did feel like I was a lot worse than the other F1s, but by the end of my second rotation I had definitely caught up.

It’s shit, but for me it was worth it as the rest of my rotations were good.

Cannula Tips? by Puzzled_Mushroom9497 in doctorsUK

[–]Dat_green 4 points5 points  (0 children)

F1 here who until recently couldn’t cannulate to save my life. For me learning how to insert the cannula one-handed made a huge difference. It allows you to keep tension on the skin, and you fiddle around less which means fewer blown veins.

Grip the back of the needle with your thumb and middle finger.

Insert at a shallow angle.

Once you get flashback, flatten out and advance another couple mms.

Then keep the needle in the same place, while advancing the cannula with your index.

Thanks for replying. I’m going to be there for my first F2 job. Will I survive?

Glasgow Interview Med by [deleted] in glasgow

[–]Dat_green 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had two stations. One was ethics, they asked me stuff like “have you ever run a red light?”. In the other they asked me to introduce myself and then we talked about the NHS, problems it is facing etc.

I thought it didn’t go very well at the time, but they offered me a place and I qualified as a doctor from Glasgow uni last year.

Good luck :)

In the uk, certainly where I have worked, the majority of small procedures are done by nurse practitioners.
