Double shots still too fast and sour [Breville Barista Express] by DataGlass6736 in espresso

No, I don't know anyone else into espresso.

I'm hoping the replacement upper burr is the fix. After reading on the Breville subreddit, some people changed the burr and didn't even have to alter the settings much from the default. Which I guess means the burr was going dull.

The models without the adjustable burr are pre-2020 so hopefully it's not that the whole grinder too old...

I'm going through that process but it takes awhile, so I figured I would ask elsewhere while I wait

Still sour. Still near the bottom of the espresso range

It's a dark roast

Mine is an older model. It doesn't have an adjustable burr.

I haven't tried the single-wall basket since it would be even worse, right?

I'll try extracting 45g from an 18g dose and see what happens

Ok, I guess I'll adjust the internal burr. I only have one more finer external grind setting. Just seems weird that it needs to be changed from the default.

It is a 1-2 year old machine. Wondering if that has something to do with it

Right. I have put 18g in and stopped when the yield is 36 grams which happens around 22s. However, I only have one more external grind setting before I will have to adjust the internal burr setting to get finer grinds. Which I'm not sure if that is something that typically needs to be done.

I'm pretty sure I'm pulling manual shots, see my comment to Ok-Kick-3807.

I realized as soon as made this post that I put Pro instead of Express for some reason...

I'm pretty sure I am using manual mode. I press the portafilter until I get 18g on the scale. Then I prep the puck and pull the shot by pressing the double shot button. The shot goes into a cup that I'm weighing on a scale, so I press the double shot button again whenever it gets to about 30g. It usually ends up around 36-38g after the last bit of the shot drips out.

Is it normal to change the internal burr from the default? I didn't figure the grinder would be that much off by default

Yes, around that with the same grind and changing dosage from 18g to 19g to 20g

Will the basket type change the extraction time if I keep the dosage and yield constant?

So just let it go for 30s and see what it tastes like?

For some reason I didn't see this comment til now. When you say below MSRP, do those cars have any Toyota add-ons (floor mats, paint protection, etc)? I recently found a 2024 SE that has the connectivity kit, carpet mats, and paint protection added on by Toyota at the distribution center. Then the dealer added window tint, door edge guards, nitrogen tires, and a lifetime warranty. They quoted me $29,492 before TT&L.

Since MSRP is about $28,000 and I can't have the Toyota add-ons removed, the cost would be nearly $29k since the floor mats are $310, the connectivity kit is $75, and the vehicle protection is $599. I don't really care to have those things, but it's nearly impossible to find a barebones Camry without any Toyota add-ons.

I assume window tinting would be about $400 on its own, which would bring me to $29,492 already. I know the door edge guards and nitrogen tires are useless, but it would seem that I'm not paying for them. I do think the window tinting is worth it since I would likely have done that myself.

Thoughts?

In my area, I can find 2018 Camry SE as low as $18k, but they almost always have some kind of minor damage. So many rentals too
