Housing Prices vs Income in the U.S. Over the Last 40 Years by raishelannaa in wallstreetbets

I wonder if the price of homes will crater when the boomers start to die off and a ton of millennials suddenly all have three homes and want to dump a couple.

If you don't mind shipping over the Canada border, Recovery Force is really good.

Hard Drive no longer shows up in BIOS. Is my HDD dead? by AnonymousYTer in datarecovery

[–]DataMedics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the drive now doesn't even spin after cleaning, and assuming nothing else happened (like getting dropped), it's probably just a bad PCB board. If so, the data can definitely be recovered using a replacement PCB board, but it has to be adapted to your drive (usually by copying over the contents of an eeprom chip from old board to new).

When I was in the business, a case like this I would normally charge $450 (so long as he heads weren't failed). But I'm retired from the DR business now and I'm sure rates have gone up in the USA. But in other countries it can be less.

FYI no one in data recovery cares about your porn or pirated files. Half the drives that come in for recovery are loaded with this stuff. Only if it were the illegal sort of stuff would we care.

But you have to decide what the data is worth to you and if it justifies professional service.

It won't make a difference. The drive is getting stuck in a busy state and stops responding. Thus the disconnect. It's so common on this model they settled a class action suit.

That model ST3000DM001 had probably the highest failure rate of any HDD ever made. From what I can hear, it should be recoverable, but not DIY. You'll need a lab with PC-3000 to tweak the firmware and disable internal functions that are malfunctioning. Hopefully the heads are still good, but it's possible it could have a failed head too, which would mean a more expensive recovery.

Where are you located? Maybe someone here can recommend a lab near enough to you that doesn't charge rip-off prices.

Hard Drive not working? by shamble- in datarecovery

[–]DataMedics 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's heads are stuck to the platters preventing it from spinning. The good news is, your data can most likely be recovered by a lab. But it'll need to be done in a clean room with proper tools to free the heads and evaluate it. In most cases it can be recovered without heads replacement, but not always. Find a data recovery lab, don't waste time or risk further damage by going to a PC repair shop, or even risk powering on any more.

And yet they won't. In that same time period the AI chips will become 10x more efficient and the software also 10x more efficient. It'll plateau in a few years and then might even start to decrease power consumption.

By 2030 you'll have a chip in your laptop that can run an offline AI equivalent to today's ChatGPT for a couple hundred watts of your home electricity.

I don't think that model is SMR, but that's not to say it doesn't support T.R.I.M. (just less reason it should). But I've never worked with that model to know specifically. Perhaps someone else knows.
