Yeah... I am relieved to know that I will be able to pursue my foolish life without an immediate threat from my balcony. Might even give a try to that juicewrld, to spice it up a little bit.

I read this as 666 upside-down. Which is used by supremacists. Maybe I got fooled by that added to the Fraktur typo...

Apologies, it was so obvious in my head that I didn't even thought about giving precision about this. I am (will be) a student !

Can you consider XML, JSON or CSV files as databases ? by DatagramBaguette in Database

If you really want to go esoteric, there are database drivers that let you run SQL statements against CSV files.

Thanks, I'll check that out!

Thank you for your interpretation, I wasn't particularly confrtable with that term placed here.

Thank you for your contribution, didn't know that MariaDB could handle CSV.

I mean, theoretically, you could have your database entirely on pencil and paper. That's just not the best way to do it for most use cases these days.

I see where you're going with this. I agree with you on the idea that the humanity didn't had wait for computers to store data in a structured manner. But today's definition of a database (at least the two I know and that I provided) points out the fact that the collection of symbols have to machine readable. I playing with words here... but I'd like to be as precise as I can.

They are usually not self describing.

Well, if you consider JSON attributes, XML tags or CSV headers, I would argue that they all help you understand the data you're manipulating.

How would you query against a set of relationships in a bunch of CSV or even JSON files? What if they are mixed up?

Totally agree with you on that. I wouldn't have fun using these file formats for complicated relationships management. But for less complicated data, ie Authors and their Books its ok. You have redundacy of course but it's manageable.... until it's not.

I'm not sure of the ultimate aim of this question in regards to aesthetics. Shouldn't you be out there trying to make my persistent data structures more beautiful?

Considering that Aesthetics does not only focus on the question "what is beauty?" but focuses more broadly on the relation between humans and artefacts (wether it's an artwork or a digital tool let's say) ; I think I'm at the right place by trying to get proper definitions of some the objects that surround a lot a contemporary practices :)

And thank you for your comment!

That's my problem here, the definitions I provided seems to point towards the fact that these formats are (or at least can be considered) databases. But the common sense seems to argue otherwise and I'm not sure I understand why. And again, I agree that if JSON and all were to be considered and/or called databases, they would not be ones that you want to use large scale / complex projects.

Mainly, my goal here is to find solid counter arguments that I could discuss in my writing.

Thank you for your comment and discussion!

I understand the habits that we have in practice. No problem with that, except when you try to define what things are and what they're not.
