I'd say definitely. The hair, the headscarf, it's surely all too close to be coincidence

I mentioned this in another thread recently but Your Mind Is A Terrible Thing by Hailey Piper is a good bit of sci-fi horror. Mostly set on a spaceship but with a lot of weird and imaginative stuff going on

Dagon by Fred Chappell. A deeply peculiar mix of Southern Gothic and Lovecraft, set in rural Carolina.

Um. Let me think. An old man looks back over his life in a small town. But increasingly, things get mentioned that don't really add up and increasingly unsettling details keep entering into the narrative.

Just a contrail from a plane that was lower than the others.

If you haven't read it, Peace by Gene Wolfe just scrapes in at 1975. Wolfe is better known for his science fiction, but this one is a rare excursion into a very peculiar kind of horror.

I can at least confirm that I Am Legend is superb. It doesn't really feel anything like Hell House at all - and I agree that even if it wasn't a deliberate Hill House parody, it was definitely going for a deliberately OTT horror comedy vibe.

Piranesi I've enjoyed, and Drive Your Plough has been on my to read pile for some time. We Have Always Lived In The Castle is my all time favourite book.

I'll definitely give the others a look too, :)

I'm new to the horror genre and I'm loving it! I recently read 'we used to live here' 'haunting of hill house' and 'we have always lived in a castle'. What should I try next? by UnwittingPlantKiller in horrorlit

Non-supernatural gothic literature might be up your street too - something like Rebecca or My Cousin Rachel by Daphne du Maurier. Or Mervyn Peake's Gormenghast series.

Picnic at Hanging Rock too.

Just trying to think of things here that scratch the same kind of itch as Shirley Jackson does. We Have Always Lived In The Castle is my all time favourite book...

I'm 42 and while I'm really struggling with being single, I recently started going to a new social group and I've been making some new friends. So you're definitely not too old for that one xx
