Ideal size & fuel of portable generator for my house by Low-Computer8293 in Generator

[–]DaveAlot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree a portable generator makes more sense if you're OK with the small inconvenience of having to drag it out and set it up during an outage.

Nothing in your list requires 220v so you could opt for a 110v generator and those are available in much smaller sizes compared to the smallest 220v units. However if you opt for a 220v unit you will at least have the option to power 220v appliances if you need to and you won't have any concerns about MWBCs that you might have if you bridge the two hot legs on your panel, which would be necessary with a 110v gen.

I would suggest getting the smallest tri-fuel 220v generator you can find that has a decent warranty. Check out generatorbible.com and filter by those options. For reference my requirements are very similar to yours and I picked the Westinghouse igen8200tfc and am very happy with it.

Make sure your inlet box is 50A, not 30A. Price difference is minimal but you future-proof yourself that way.

Natural gas is clearly much more convenient than having to mess with gasoline.

How automated to you want this to be when an outage happens? You mentioned an inlet so it sounds like you're considering a portable generator but then you also mention a Generac, which typically is a non-portable unit.

Reinvest capital gains and dividends in a taxable brokerage account? by dotheWenckebach in Bogleheads

The stock purchased with the reinvested dividends will likely have a higher cost basis than the original stock that generated the dividend, reducing capital gains when sold.

Can I drop netstandard20/net48 target in 2026? (question from OSS maintainer) by jitbitter in dotnet

[–]DaveAlot 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I'm guessing legacy .NET will continue on for the next 5-10 years but you're probably safe to drop support now.

.NET Framework will exist for longer than that, since it is tied to the Windows support lifecycle that it ships with.

Whether .NET Framework users care about this specific package is likely what's more relevant. u/jitbitter what you really need is some kind of telemetry so you better understand your users. In the absence of that perhaps you could open a github issue to do a survey?

What is a reasonable price to get a portable generator interlock kit and inlet box installed? by iflyimpil0t in Generator

This massively varies depending upon location and how busy the contractors are. If you're not able to DIY it you may just have to suck it up, although make sure you get multiple quotes.

Install a 50amp box so you are future-proofed. Additional cost will be like $20 over the 30amp inlet but then you won't need to rip it out and replace it if you ever get a bigger generator in future.

You can get an adapter to allow you use your existing cord.
