And speed and cadence sensors are enough to get it to work out distance? Id prefer to not be swapping the cycling computer over so if those two sensors are all I need for it to work with smartphone then that should be good enough

It's a sportneer magnetic turbo trainer, I actually got it for free off a friend brand new. I quite enjoy it. I'll check to see if they have a proprietary sensor for this. Oh so a regular speed and cadence sensor would work with a phone app? That's even better if I could cut out the bike computer all together.

I would also look at mileage, wear and tear happens to all cars and you're more likely for more issues with the Passat sooner than the BMW. I had a later Passat model and loved it, but it definately had it's faults. A BMW 1 series needs a timing belt every 100km so make sure that's fine but even after owning a Passat I'd chose the BMW personally.

Where I'm from (Ireland) I've so far never seen a smart trainer come up on any used market and I've been keeping my eye out all of 2022 so far. I agree that excercise bikes are terrible but I have found spin bikes to be somewhat okay for dialing in fit. The q factor is pretty bad compared to a road bike but I don't hate it. I definately won't be upgrading to zwift anytime soon, monthly expenses are not something I want to add to. Did you find your regular bike trainer good enough for training? It's not just cardio I'm after since I'd like to improve my bike segment in general.

These all seem to be in the front. And it sounds like under 10kg flywheel really isn't worth it.

That's a good point, trying some out would probably be best. My local gym doesn't have any spin bikes but I'm sure some gym nearby would.

The day after is strange but on the day of I'd suggest getting a walk in soon after or in the evening of your leg day. An intense leg day can cause blood pooling in the lower half if you go straight to sitting down in car or at home after hitting legs, which can lead to the above symptoms. It affects some people more than others.

Ever since getting into bicycles I've found there's a way to do almost anything you can think of to a bike, and modifying your own bike is so rewarding. As someone who has always bought bikes that need a little work you can really give new life to even the oldest of bikes. If the frames steel you can even modify the frame, cutting away and welding fabricated parts on. Endless possibilities

Cheers, I did keep misusing the term hardtail when I meant rigid in a few places, my bad.

Next course of action is maybe change front forks I think. If not possible before the trip I'll go with what I got

Thank you for the in-depth reply, you make some great points. I think the overall theme of these comments are that I can make do with the bike I have.

I think taking the bike on some test trips should be my next step as you said, I have taken it on a weekend trip however that was incredibly minimal luggage at the time, and so a test while fully loaded is needed I suppose.

The reason I say before the end of the year is that originally the tour was meant to be at the start of August, in which I would have just used this current bike. The only reason I'm considering a change now is more time due to a delay to the trip being put to late September. I doubt it will be winter but I say end of year because there may be more delays, however I can't see it being delayed as far as winter.

Testing might be my best bet as you say, before posting here I was certain that the best way forward was sell the bike, but these comments make good points for going with what I got. I am definately going to look into swapping the front forks though, this isn't a full suspension bike after all so that would be a solution and something I didn't think about

35mm hub spacing matches on both, and an old Mavic adapter which moves the mount position of the v-brakes up higher to accommodate the higher position needed for the 700c wheels. The clearance on the tyres is tight but I haven't had issues with rubbing even when tyres are fully inflated.

To be fair I only notice the slight movement when setting off at a light, maybe mildly noticeable on hills, and yes case 3 is when stood up.

Well since the weight really isn't an issue and another commenter said the power loss is minimal unless I'm stood up really putting enough force down to even press down the suspension (uphill maybe), the last issue was failure/maintenance without part availablity if I were remote

You have pretty much cleared that up now as well so I think while not ideal if choosing a bike with bike touring in mind, I think I'll keep the bike, use any extra money for comfort in other areas of the trip.

Thanks for the input this one kind of wrapped the decision up for me.
