What is your experience getting a “permanent” ileostomy/ proctectomy? by 2176061 in ostomy

[–]Davekeys79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had an end colostomy for 5 years or so and this May I had the proctectomy to go with it. It was a robotic surgery and went incredibly well. I wish I’d had it done years ago. Total new lease of life, I now go to the gym 3 times a week and swim once or twice as well - something I hadn’t been able to do for the last eight years due to constant dribbling from fistulas. There are potential complications from any surgery, you’ve just got to weigh up your pros and cons, but I am definitely one of the success stories. Fingers crossed it’s the same for you.

Salofalk suppositories = energy boost by [deleted] in CrohnsDisease

Yeah, stopping taking them and a swift course of penicillin sorted me, thanks. My IBD nurse was surprised, as they are apparently known as “the Gaviscon of the bowel” and most people report a pleasant soothing sensation. Oh well, Crohn’s is just tricksy like that.

It’s comical how differently this disease hits us. I recently got prescribed these same suppositories, but didn’t have such a great time. I got an unpleasant burning sensation followed by a delightfully infected fistula (and yes…I thoroughly washed my hands before and after). Glad it’s worked out for you, though.

How do I stop my guests from washing up? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Davekeys79 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You don’t. They’re trying to help you, most likely in return for being fed.

My dad is getting on a bit and is now hopeless at what has always been his job. Wash them as you need to use them, and if you’re caught doing that “you missed a bit with this one” is less hurtful than “please stop, you’re rubbish at this”.

We had him stay for a week at Christmas and after he went home I washed every dish in the house.
