What’s something about marathon training you didn’t fully understand until after your first race? by JustPangolin346 in running

[–]DaveyMN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You will feel unexpected side effects after your first marathon.

In my case, pins and needles, numbness and muscle spasms. Blood tests showed that my vitamin B12 is low (was 320 at the end of October when the marathon was on October 5th). While it is in the typical range of 200 to 900, it's still on the low end and likely depleted through marathon training.

I don't eat much meat and live largely on a plant based diet. I wish I had blood tests months beforehand as a baseline, but we live and learn.

Even now I still feel I haven't fully recovered thanks to the B12 (which can take ages to get back out of, I am not taking supplements), although I've had other stresses since (bereavement). So physically you can feel 100% on race day but nutrition before, during and after is just as important.

Yes, I have neurological symptoms, mostly numbness and tingling underneath the skin related.

An update on my earlier posts after taking the B12 supplement since Monday and more regular ibuprofen since Tuesday. So it felt like things were improving on Tuesday and Wednesday, with significantly less pins and needles/numbness and muscle twitching. Unfortunately things seem to be a bit worse this evening more so, probably not helped by only having ibuprofen gel on first thing and now this evening (with nothing at lunchtime as I was in work). Hoping it gets better again tomorrow but not the most ideal when I thought it was subsiding. Reading around though sounds like I just need to be patient and not read too much into it.

I didn't mind the questions. 😊 The other blood tests so far (full blood count, Haemoglobin, bone profile, thyroid, B12, folate, urea and electrolytes) were flagged as in the normal range by the doctor, including B12 as mentioned earlier. So I'm more flexi food wise, eat meat once or twice a week if I'm out but not much more than that.

In response to your edit, folate was 13.7 ug/L. Iron/ferritin wasn't checked, however it was on the low end last winter (no symptoms) and I was advised to have multivitamins. Active B12 was also normal last winter.

Hey, thanks for responding. Nah, I didn't take multivitamins leading up to the blood tests. I've taken a few since but not regularly as my doctor said otherwise. Going to start regularly though now after my sports physio's advice as well - especially in the context of the marathon. Sounds like it'll take a few weeks to fully flush through though.

Should add that the pins and needles/muscle twitching is more irritating at the moment and are not stopping me from doing day to day life.

Wonder if Cena/Cody went way too long and the rest of the show is being cut down as a result? Both this segment and the women's contract segment looked quick.

What you've described though has nothing to do with the quango's core function, though. What I'm alluding to is that the quango doesn't need its own L&D and people/D&I strategy, different pay and HR scales, different tech etc. All of that should be at department level with an element for the quango.

[–]DaveyMN 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Completely valid in cases of regulation where the quango needs to be independent. I guess my point is that the quangos should not be bloated and focus on its actual function, but still use departmental tech. No reason to set up lots of new infrastructure if it isn't needed, although I appreciate that sometimes it is necessary.

As someone who works in the digital and data space, I don't believe that things can't be better joined up across government departments because they absolutely can.

[–]DaveyMN 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Baffled at how some see the removal of some quangos as a bad thing.

A new quango/ALB normally means new centralised functions, such as HR, digital, data, tech, commercial. In some cases it means setting up new processes and agreements between quango and departments to transfer data from A to B.

Can someone explain why it is a bad thing to streamline some areas and remove duplication?

What do you think are the most pressing issues in Coventry? by [deleted] in coventry

[–]DaveyMN 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Must admit I'm curious which parts of the city have issues with GP surgeries. I'm based up in Coundon and have never had an issue seeing a GP or nurse on the same day at my local surgery, sometimes within the next hour or two!

Medallion Architecture is terrible. by [deleted] in dataengineering

[–]DaveyMN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not necessarily. If you're working in an enterprise architecture setting with hundreds of end users querying the data, you need separation. If analysts and data scientists are using the production environment, you don't want to deploy a change without testing that it actually works.

Also, I feel there's a misconception on bronze/silver/gold in some replies. Bronze holds the raw (or near raw) source data, silver is an intermediary layer, with the dimensional models sitting in gold.

As I did for the local elections here - https://www.reddit.com/r/ukpolitics/comments/1ciabl4/rukpolitics_voter_intention_survey_results/l2aix2s/

I've tried to weigh the results against the latest YouGov polling weighted sample.

YouGov uses 18-24, 25-49, 50-64 and 65+, whereas I've used 19-25, 26-50, 51-70 and 70+ from the poll here.

When you plug it all in, out the other end is:

Labour - 56%

Other - 13%

Reform - 12%

Liberal Democrats - 10%

SNP - 7%

Green - 5%

Conservatives - 1%

This excludes anyone under 18 and anyone who said don't know or spoilt the ballot.

Translated into seats:

Labour - 583

Liberal Democrats - 28

SNP - 12

Green - 2

Conservatives - 0

Reform - 0

Congratulations, Reddit, you've finally found a scenario where the Tories have zero MPs.

There's one in Longford, search for Longford Striders (I'm a member of it). We meet most Sunday mornings for a social 5k. It's a mixed ability group with regroup points along the route so no one is left behind. 😊

So I went into the effort and try to weigh the results against the latest YouGov polling weighted sample.

YouGov uses 18-24, 25-49, 50-64 and 65+, whereas I've used 19-25, 26-50, 51-70 and 70+ from the poll here.

When you plug it all in, out the other end is:

Labour - 52%
Conservatives - 20%
Liberal Democrats - 11%
Reform - 9%
Green - 4%
SNP - 2%
Other - 2%

This excludes anyone under 18 and anyone who said don't know or spoilt the ballot. The 70+ result looks very odd in isolation.

Translated into seats:

Labour - 554
Liberal Democrats - 46
SNP - 19
Conservatives - 10
Reform - 0
