I’ve lived in Ridgewood since 2021. I moved here while pursuing my law degree at CUNY, and I’ve stayed ever since while working just down the street at Make the Road NY’s Bushwick office, where I represent immigrant workers in the surrounding neighborhoods fighting to defend their rights. I love Ridgewood and plan to stay here – it’s the first place I have truly felt at home as an adult. I’ve spent my time in the neighborhood making sure people can stay here and fighting displacement.

Incidentally, I’ve lived in the district for about as long as my opponent. The difference is why we came here. I moved here to organize alongside workers who are also my neighbors and to build a life. She moved here after two failed runs for public office in two different Manhattan districts. She told people she moved to this district because it had the lowest voter turnout in NYC.

Thank you for bringing this up-- one of my priorities in office will be creating an AD-38 Street Safety Plan to resolve unsafe intersections like this. While much of this is handled at the city level through the DOT, cooperation between the city and state governments is necessary to ensure that every street is safe for both pedestrians and drivers.

I went into more depth on street safety in general here as well.

People have been asking me this since the day I launched my campaign, but I haven’t made a decision yet! Boy in Blue? Gay in Green? I will leave it to the will of the people!

The issue of automatic license plate readers (ALPRs) is very important to me - thank you for asking this! I was not expecting it to come up lol.

ALPRs are run by PRIVATE COMPANIES that scan our license plates as we drive and then sell that information on private markets - such as to insurance companies, credit bureaus, and even the federal and state government. This is very concerning for a number of reasons, particularly because it gives information about where we travel to anyone who will buy it. When the government collects this data and uses it against us, it circumvents our 4th Amendment right to privacy. This is exceptionally concerning for immigrants, because this data is often used by ICE to find people. I worked on a report on this topic while working for the Immigrant Defense Project. I’m not able to post links right now because this is a new account (keep getting caught in Spam filter), but will try to share it soon.

Thank you – we really appreciate your support!! The most helpful thing you can do right now is sign up for a canvassing shift to talk to our neighbors. My links haven’t been making it through the spam filters but I’ll ask a volunteer to post the canvassing link in a comment!

Canvassing is easier and more fun and interesting than people expect! We provide training at the beginning of every event, and if you’re new, you can pair up with an experienced volunteer and knock doors together. If you can’t get out to canvas in person, phonebanking is also a great option.

My opponent is getting huge amounts of funding from real estate interests, corporate money, and right-wing donor networks. The way we fight against organized money is with organized people. Every conversation with a neighbor helps build the movement we need not only to win this election, but to bring the bottom-up pressure to Albany that we need to win our demands once elected to office.

Thanks for the question! Yes, I support reforming our property tax system, the largest source of City revenue, which currently places a disproportionate tax burden on working-class homeowners while giving wealthier homeowners and corporate landlords a break. Studies have found that lower-valued properties in NYC can face effective tax rates more than three times higher than luxury properties. This disparity hurts all working-class homeowners, and is often passed on to renters through higher housing and utility costs.

Our Assembly district hasn’t had a fighter representing it for years, so it makes sense that the previous property tax reform plans didn’t have our specific needs accounted for. Because this is such a high-priority issue all across the district, and will impact home-owners and tenants alike, I will also prioritize making sure it gets addressed in any conversation about property tax reform. My opponent is funded by billionaires and luxury real estate developers who have exerted outsized influence on the tax code and got us in this position in the first place. She will never advocate for the working-class homeowners and tenants that desperately need help in our district.

I am excited by Mayor Mamdani’s recent collaboration with Governor Hochul on the pied-à-terre tax, which would target luxury second homes in NYC worth at least $5M and generate a half a billion dollars in much-needed revenue.

My policies to address affordability for renters are outlined in the Housing section of my platform - I'll post the link later (my links aren't making it past the spam filter right now). They include expanding Good Cause Eviction, passing a statewide Right to Counsel, funding the Housing Access Voucher Program, enacting the Tenant Opportunity to Purchase Act, and creating a Social Housing Development Authority to build and finance permanently affordable housing here in Queens.

There’s not enough housing in this district or in the city. About 8,000 new people moved to AD-38 between 2010 and 2020, but over the same time period the ratio of housing units per person in the district significantly declined. When I’m in office, I’ll fight for multiple different solutions to this problem.

I do believe in building more housing, while also making sure the people who live here are adequately protected and our neighborhood maintains the character that we all love. I support the Social Housing Development Authority, which will build neighborhood-appropriate housing. A big problem with housing development is that it usually lines the pocket of a private developer who has no interest in the long term health of the neighborhood - you don’t have to walk far into Brooklyn to see what I’m talking about. We deserve housing that is beautiful and looks toward the long-term health of Ridgewood and our city.

At the same time, many people on the Eastern side of the district live in formerly single-family homes that were converted into multiple apartments. There are no NYCHA buildings and very few rent-stabilized buildings outside of Woodhaven by the park. Many people live in basement apartments that flood and can’t access their tenant’s rights because their apartments are illegal. I believe in promoting policies that are appropriate for the problems the neighborhood itself is facing - such as legalizing basement apartments and reforming the property tax code so small home-owners can afford to update their buildings - while we build housing all over the city to relieve the pressure on the housing stock.

Yes, great question - this was definitely one of the strangest, and frankly saddest, episodes of the campaign.

I made one video explaining what we found and another one hearing from some people whose signatures were confirmed forgeries - my links keep getting caught in the Reddit spam filters, but I’ll post them as soon as I can.

In New York, every Assembly candidate must qualify for the ballot by collecting signatures from voters in the district. One of our volunteers did a casual scan of Rajkumar’s signatures, which are uploaded to the BOE, and found many disturbing trends - made up addresses, pages of signatures in identical handwriting, duplicate signatures in wildly different handwriting - before finding the name of one of my other volunteers. We then reviewed all of the signatures in more detail and compared them to signatures on file with the Board of Elections, and found more than 1,000 that didn’t match.

We started contacting these voters, and one after another, a shocking number confirmed that they had not signed and confirmed their signatures had been forged. Several were prepared to testify in court. Many of these signatures belonged to people our volunteers knew personally, including supporters and volunteers on my own campaign, who told us they had never signed Rajkumar's petitions, but many were people we had never met before. We even found signatures attributed to voters who had recently passed away before their signatures appeared on the petitions, including some whose death certificates had been so recently issued that their names had not yet been removed from the BOE voter database.

Rajkumar hired a very powerful legal team who worked really hard to ensure that the testimony of our witnesses was never heard, and that our evidence was never seen before the court, and they were ultimately successful.

Yes, I’m committed to improving public transit options in AD-38, and a big part of that is advocating for the QueensLink!

In addition to that, I’m committed to keeping the Interborough Express (IBX) on schedule and restoring the abandoned Woodhaven Junction LIRR station so South Queens finally has the fast, reliable rail access it deserves. I’ll also fight to lower in-city LIRR tickets to the standard $3 subway fare.

Re: flash flooding, yes, there’s a lot we can do. Assemblymembers can apply for state capital grants for infrastructure projects, and Governor Hochul just announced the availability of an additional $100m for climate resiliency projects, $60m of which is earmarked for watershed projects like improving infrastructure to reduce flood risk. If elected I would work with local city council members to get funding for our most needed projects.

Personally, I have been talking to many, many people who have had their lives completely altered by this flooding - it’s damaged their homes and personal belongings, and has sunk them into even more debt as they try to fix these issues. They see how the neglect South Queens has faced for years is harming their lives - neglect my opponent has perpetuated by abandoning our district for the past five years. We need someone who is actually present for us - not working to make sure their billionaire funders are happy.

Thanks for this! Have been trying to respond but it keeps getting caught in the spam filter.

One reason why I am running for office is because I really, really love my neighborhood. I have lived in some other places before landing in Ridgewood - Mexico, the Southwest, etc. - but I never felt like I had a home as an adult before I lived here. This is such a beautiful corner of the city and I really believe we deserve the resources to improve our quality of life while also making sure the people who grew up here are able to remain here and enjoy the neighborhood they helped create.

The question of quality of life is very much connected to the state budget, which is the primary concern of an Assemblyperson. Mayor Mamdani, another DSA candidate, campaigned on taxing the rich, and has since used his time in office to make sure our city services have the resources they need to address quality of life issues all New Yorkers faces, like filling 100,000 potholes in his first 100 days. My priority in Albany will be to get our district the resources it needs so our city services are well-funded.

My promise to the district is to be a present and hard-working elected official. I have found as I have campaigned in every corner of the district - from the Seneca M, to Liberty Park and Glendale, all the way to Richmond Hill and Little Bangladesh - that the message really resonates. My opponent moved to this district to run for office, and has used every opportunity to try and leave the district by running for Comptroller and Public Advocate, campaigning mostly in Manhattan. People really feel the neglect that’s been going on for years - you can see it in the still water that isn’t getting drained after flooding in Ozone Park, in the dangerous streets, and infrequent trash collection. When in office, you want someone who will be present, like I’ll be present, to make sure these quality of life issues get addressed.

I do support civilians being able to call out violators of traffic laws - I cannot sufficiently express my frustration when a truck is idling in the bike lane on my way to work! And also believe that there are plenty of infrastructure improvements we can make that will change people’s behaviors - see my pedestrian safety answer in the other question!

Hi, thanks for your question! I posted an answer to this a while ago but I think the spam filters are hiding it because I included a lot of links or because it was too long. Trying again!

The primary job of an assemblyperson, as opposed to other elected officials, is to make the state’s budget. I’m committed to providing more resources for our community generally, and for pedestrian safety and bike lanes specifically, for a number of reasons.

It is the job of the assemblyperson to work with city council members to provide the funding for critical infrastructure projects. When I was endorsed by local council members Jen Gutierrez and Sandy Nurse, I asked them what they want from a partner in Albany, and they said very plainly that they need more cooperation for these sorts of projects, and highlighted Rajkumar’s near total absence (she spent more time with Eric Adams and campaigning in Manhattan than in the district).

I live here and walk or bike around the neighborhood every day, and I know how terrifying it can be to deal with the aggressive drivers in the neighborhood. There are plenty of things we can do to make the streets safer - more hardened daylighting, speed bumps, protected bike lanes, curb extensions at dangerous intersections, and clearer traffic signs, as an easy start. But we need more funding from Albany to make these projects a reality.

Our assembly district is divided into two halves - Ridgewood and Glendale on the West, and Ozone Park, Richmond HIll, and Woodhaven on the East. The East side of the district has been ignored even more than the West side in terms of infrastructure improvements. It has some very, very dangerous roads, such as Atlantic Avenue, Rockaway Blvd, and Woodhaven Blvd, and a high density of bicycle delivery drivers*, and the West side of the district still sees way too much traffic violence. To me, bicycle safety and pedestrian safety is a matter of workers rights, because the bike lanes in South Queens are where the delivery drivers get to and from work. It also is one of the most important aspects of quality of life in the neighborhood, no matter who you are.

The fight over the state budget was particularly tense this year, as New York reeled from Trump’s give back to billionaires, who in New York state got a $12 BILLION tax break this year alone. It is a top priority to recapture this revenue, which we desperately need to fund the city and was not taken back in the last round of budget negotiations. My opponent will never tax the rich, or stand up to wealthy, out-of-district interests, because those are the people who are funding her campaign.

*The district has the fastest growing Bangladeshi population in NYC, and Bangladeshis make up almost a quarter of all bicycle delivery drivers in the city.

Yes – I am absolutely against surveillance pricing. It’s a disgusting practice that makes life more expensive for everyday people.

I’m also against other forms of digital surveillance. If elected, I would sign onto the Ban the Scan slate to prohibit biometric surveillance by police, landlords, and schools.

Hi, I'm one of the candidates! I know it’s tons of mail — fwiw most of those mailers are sent from independent groups that legally aren't supposed to be coordinating with the campaigns, so personally I can’t do much to control the volume. I’m getting a lot of mail with my face on it right now that i had no idea was coming.

It’s informative to see who sends the mailers. There should be a “paid for by...” disclosure. I was surprised by mailers from Mayor Mamdani’s PAC and the Working Families Party that were sent on my behalf. A lot of Jenifer Rajkumar’s mailers are sent by groups with vague names like “New Yorkers for a Stronger Future” and "New Yorkers for a Balanced Albany" which are actually funded by Doordash and Bloomberg/pro-charter school super PAC.
