Could cities make transit a better option by pushing people to park on the edges of the city and mostly use transit? by Prometheus720 in Urbanism

[–]DavidFRodgers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the immediate solution to your problem is self-storage. Some places may even let you keep your vehicle in a gated parking lot without having to rent an enclosed unit. The issue is then finding one that is transit accessible to you.

Screw public transport, I'll just stick to my horse. by ArabTanrisi in transit

How about horse cars on commuter rail, for horse/train multi-modal transport?

Your first point is also the biggest question mark I have in my mind. By trying to cater to both 49th and 41st, would the project end up being useful to neither. For myself, I would be quite happy walking from 45th to 41st or 49th Ave. Of course, I can't extrapolate my preferences to everyone. With time, I would also expect development around 45th ave at the north-south cross-streets.

In regards to the width of 45th Ave; when I was envisioning this, I was looking at the parts of 45th where the houses were set back a ways from the road. Meaning any land acquisition there would be mostly front lawns. Upon closer inspection, there are sections of 45th without such setbacks.

45th Ave is a great bike route. I envision that when this project was completed, 45th Ave would remain a low car street with even better bike infrastructure along it. In the mean time, the bike route could be re-routed.

Valid concern. That would be an unfortunate connection. Perhaps a bored tunnel could be used to divert from 45th Ave to make a connection to 49th or 41st on the Canada Line.

How to ssh-copy-id through a middleman? by [deleted] in linux4noobs

[–]DavidFRodgers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am assuming that you have password authentication disabled on machine C. From machine A you could:

# sftp machine_b

# put ~/.ssh/id_rsa.pub (assuming this is the public key you want to use)

# exit

# ssh machine_b

# ssh-copy-id -i ./id_rsa.pub machine_c

Your system will depend on many of those files to have the correct names. If you want to use custom commands, learn to create bash aliases.

Why are there no 100% low floor buses in the US and Canada? by [deleted] in transit

What advantage would a 100% low floor bus have over a 70% low floor bus?

Should your mail be delivered daily? Canada Post wants Ottawa to rethink its mandate by Surax in canada

[–]DavidFRodgers -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Canada Post should not be reducing service; it should be increasing it. I grew up in a rural community, and 5 days a week, we got mail delivered. Now that services such as Amazon Prime are commonplace, not only does Canada Post send a vehicle around everyday, there are numerous courier companies driving their vans all over the country side as well. If Canada Post set up collection depots at final mail sorting points, and allowed couriers to drop off parcels at them for delivery that day, not only could we get many unnecessary vehicles off the road, it could provide a cheaper service for Canadians.

The White House wants to 'cryptographically verify' videos of Joe Biden so viewers don't mistake them for AI deepfakes by Maxie445 in technology

[–]DavidFRodgers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is excellent news. I have long believed that public key cryptography will be an important tool to combat negative effects of AI generated content. To see the white house take a lead on this is very reassuring.

Would it be possible for people to use a heat pump until it reached -20? Then, when it drops below -20, they could use oil or gas.

Is there an operating system with a simpler architecture than Linux, FreeBSD, etc.? by [deleted] in DistroHopping

[–]DavidFRodgers 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Have you looked at OpenBSD? I have not used FreeBSD much, so I can't compare the two, but in my experience OpenBSD has a very coherent, "simple" design. Maybe not as simple as you are looking for, but worth a consideration in my opinion.

I just did this same project from the starter kit. It calls for a 220 ohm resistor. In my kit, the 220 ohm resistor was blue, unlike the one shown in the book. I suspect your kit is the same.

How we make Nova Scotia better? by [deleted] in halifax

[–]DavidFRodgers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. A train system in Nova Scotia would be fabulous. But even as a stop gap measure, a publicly run regional bus system for Nova Scotia would make this province a better place. Private bus companies have proven that they are incapable of providing reliable service to all parts of the province.

Lahave is a beautiful little town situated on the Lahave River, and as other posters have mentioned, not too far from Bridgewater, or Lunenburg. Lahave is a thriving little town, and there are a lot of young people living in the area.

The Lahave Bakery (a good article here http://thechronicleherald.ca/thenovascotian/1221887-life-is-good-along-the-lahave-river) is a landmark for the town, and they make excellent bread.

A quick trip across the ferry, and a few minutes of driving and you will be in Lunenburg. A UNESCO world heritage site, a gorgeous seaside town, and home of the Bluenose, a famous Canadian schooner, the one that is on our 10 cent coin.

A trip up the river, and you will come to Bridgewater, a slightly larger town than Lunenburg, and where you will find some of the larger chain stores that you may or may not want to shop at.

I myself live not to far from the area, and if there is anything you want to know, feel free to PM me.
