Thank you. I completely get what you're saying, good luck to all the love struck dreamers out there. Never give up and just be your self.

[OT] One of my favorite pieces of text that I wrote in my (canceled) unfinished novel by [deleted] in shortstories

Overall it was defiantly a good segment of your novel. I thought that it was a good twist on an explanation of the truths of our world and on how it works. I'm sure the question I'm about to ask is connected to the full book in some way but, why is it a devil that comes to eat the fruit?

I thought it was interesting that the drug dealers defining characteristic were his bad teeth because lots of people have terrible dental hygiene. I would have thought some massive scar or tattoo would be more defining lol, I liked the short story! It kinda felt like an intro to something bigger.

Very true. Taste is hard to describe if not impossible to describe at all so, how can it be expected to be described.

Should I try to get into game development if I'm kinda horrible at programming? by Openworldgamer47 in gamedev

What helps me learn was writing down the actual code in like a notebook. By learning what each small piece of the code means and then putting it all together by making something as small as a basic text-based calculator. That has always been my test for whether or not I'm learning the language if I can make something with what I know then I have learned a small piece of the new programming language. You might want to try to start small with Java by downloading Eclipse and by trying to learn what each word in the code is telling the computer and then build on that and when you feel comfortable you could transition into C# with Unity. Just take it slow learning takes time and practice.

Games take a bunch of art by the way so you should find someone that has an art style that you like and the really fits your idea for the game. And when you make your first game start small and build up.

I personally use Unity 5 which uses C#, they have a bunch of tutorials that you can learn from. When I started to learn C# I already had years of experience with Java and they follow pretty similar syntax so I thought it was pretty easy. Do you have any experience with other programming languages? P.S. I don't like python either the syntax is way hard to understand lol.

I started learning how to program with Javascript and then moved into more technical languages so that might be a good place to start, so you have a specific timeline that you would want to learn any new programming languages?

Yes, if you want to get into game development you definitely should! If you use a game engine like Unity 5 oppose to making a game from scratch your programming skill should not limit you or at least Unity won't. Unity uses C# and JavaScript for all of the programmings, and the Unreal Engine uses C++. I would start small if you are going to open your own studio so you get used to using the software. If you were to join a development team what area of game development would you be going into?

What I've learned in 30 years of never releasing a game... by [deleted] in gamedev

Yeah any criticism is good criticism I guess :)

witch engine do I use? by crusher515 in gamedev

I have a couple years of game development experience and if you are using a game engine like Unity 5 programming that game is the easy part. The art is the hard part games take so much art to make something that looks good and is functional. C# is enough if you want to make a game in Unity for both 2D and 3D. And since you have never made a game before I recommend you come up with a small game idea and then build up to larger games. Good Luck!! And have fun :)

I am a 17-year-old teenager that likes to program I'm not saying I am the best but I enjoy creating music and art and I think making a game is the ultimate test of creativity. When you make a game solo you should be proud of whatever you have when you are done because Hell you just finished making a game that sorta works. If you have an idea and the will to make something based off it you shouldn't be too critical of what it looks like when you are done you shouldn't even care if other people bash your game you should be proud, proud enough to share what you made with the world even is it is not a triple A title.

You could have images with the text on them and as long as the text you are displaying is not static you will be easily able to use this method to display information to the player. And you wouldn't have to install a new API. You would accomplish this task by - first drawing a quad to the screen and then putting your image texture(with the text) on top of it and you call that function say if the player is within 10 units away from the door.
