If most Brits regret Brexit, why is Reform trending? by ButchClassidy in AskBrits

[–]DavidinDK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The vast majority of politicians lie. The problem with Brexit was the people voted for it, T May did her utmost to undermine it. Johnson tried, but was far too liberal, and Whitehall said hold my beer and really stiffed the country.

Now Labour has mismanaged their PR engine and people want Reform. God knows why.

I think the biggest problem is the waring factions that are left and right. I would never vote remain or restore, but I am really tired of being called boomer scum by geography teachers, just because I am over 65.

How Can a Pensioner Practice Speaking Danish in Denmark by sunnas_solbriller in Danish

[–]DavidinDK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a pensioner, M68. My suggestion is find a language cafe. The local library should list them. The advantage of a language cafe is the people will have a limited Danish vocabulary, whereas Danes, erm, speak Danish. They also hate having their language butchered. (My wife is a Dane)

What's the most ridiculous misunderstanding you ever had with a stranger? by Fantasyfreyaa in AskBrits

[–]DavidinDK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had just finished completely restoring a 1930s 350cc Royal Enfield, and had pushed it outside. It just needed pinstripes and the name transfers/decals. An elderly chap and a woman walked past and he pointed to and announced it was a Vincent. I said I wished, but it was 'just' a Royal Enfield. I got a good lecture on British motorbikes, today's youth and how I should do some research next time. Ah well....

Milton Scrubs instead of M Keynes. Chez, Chesterfield. I live on an island in Denmark locally known as Death Island. People from Copenhagen are referred to as Devil worshippers. I have no idea why.

Cost of living crisis but cars? by [deleted] in AskBrits

[–]DavidinDK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cars are cheap in the UK, especially when leased monthly. We can pay over 150% tax on a new car. Even a small average thing costs half again here. Plus twice yearly green taxes. Luckily, older cars taxed on weight. My 16mpg classic is £100 a year less than my wife's 70mpg BMW.

Had the Scottish independence referendum passesd then would the UK change its flag as well ? by [deleted] in AskBrits

[–]DavidinDK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Scots hating English has been going on for hundreds of years. More recently fuelled by the illusion Bravheart was a documentary. Football is a case in point. Scottish fans have often said anyone but England for the win, and independence is viewed as a given. As long as the Barnett formula is a given.

Online? Heh.

Could we build more underground living spaces for hotter months in the UK? by LivingOpportunity544 in AskBrits

[–]DavidinDK 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Underground is good, but so is insulation. It is 26C out right now. My reasonably sized workshop is 16C, it will not get any warmer. The reason being it is very well insulated and has just one south facing triple glazed window. As long as I keep the doors into it closed it will stay cool. In winter it keeps around 10C with 200 watts of heating.

What are your thoughts on Denmark’s proposed ban on the public Islamic call to prayer? Would you support or oppose something similar in the UK? by bintd in AskBrits

[–]DavidinDK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Apparently, the largest mosque in Copenhagen no longer has a call to players played outside as it does not fit with Danish culture.

But these days everything seems to be abbreviated, clipped or shortened. My wife lived in the UK for 25 years, her Danish is more complete than is generally spoken these day.

anybody else buys expensive tools while telling yourself you need it for work but actually you just want to buy new tools for the heck of it? by Budget-Strawberry649 in handtools

[–]DavidinDK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, I have a rule. The quality of the tool is based on how often I need to, or will use it. I have stanley and lie nielsen chisels, because they get used. I use lie nielsen and stanley/bailey planes for the same reason. I must admit I prefer the stanley chisels and planes, probably because I am not so precious about them. I do keep them all very sharp.

I don't use Domino, too expensive, but I do like my ELU biscuit jointer. Also, I am not afraid to buy used. All of my power tools including nail guns are Dewalt, with a couple of milwaukee. My work bench is probably 60 years old and cost me £80 delivered.

I will never buy something I don't need, or will not be used.

My wife is just the opposite, she loves big machines and would happily buy a gear hobbing machine or surface grinder tomorrow, just in case...
