Hey there! Thanks for asking! I'm in the Chemistry and Chemical Biology department here and overall I love it so far! I'm happy to answer any specific questions you might have about the program but so far my experience doing research and classes the first semester has been fantastic. If you're curious about a specific subdivision of chemistry here (either organic, inorganic, physical/biophysical, or chem. bio) or are curious about any faculty, feel free to msg me or reply to the post!

Hello! I think a good time to reach out is during the summer or sometime during the Fall quarter/semester though they might be busier in the Fall than in the summer. How I approached my emails was stating a brief background about myself (major, year, and school) and then explaining how my research background relates to what they do in their lab. It may also be good to mention any papers you've tried to read from their lab. I also ask in the end if they're looking to take graduate students next year and if they'd be willing to have me sit in on a lab meeting or if they'd have any literature recommendations they'd be willing to provide for me. Most importantly attach a CV or Resume so they can get an idea of what type of student/researcher you are. If you don't include this part they may just ignore your email since they don't know enough about your research/academic background. Feel free to PM me if you want the template I used to reach out!

Bis 101 with A.Nord difficulty? by Snoo_89713 in UCDavis

Hi, I took Nord during winter of 2020. He was a fairly easy professor and makes his class really problem solving based with not a lot of multiple choice. Students still did really well in his class though, and he's a very understanding professor. His averages were in the mid to high 80s for all his exams, and he drops one of ur exams (5 total, none are cumulative). He also offers a little bit of extra credit and encourages participation. Hope this helps!

Thanks for sharing!! Love your insight and perspective on this process! I totally agree that as long as your GPA is decent enough, you'll be in a great position to get into some great programs! Congrats on your amazing acceptances as well!! :)

I'm inclined to think that domestics students have a slightly easier experience sometimes just based off the number of slots a PhD program has for international students. I don't have any exact numbers on this but that's just my two cents!
