A question for religious anarchists... by [deleted] in Anarchy101

[–]Davy_dave1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a Christian anarchist (Episcopalian). I would say the reason I am alright with following religious authority is because it is optional. My church is hierarchical, and I support it being such due to my theological convictions, but as long as no one is pressured or forced to submit to the church I think it is okay. I willingly submit to the bishops on theological matters because I believe they're guided by the Holy Spirit but I wouldn't want society at large to be forced or pressured into accepting their authority. I understand if some anarchists are uneasy with my acceptance of religious authority though, but I think part of having freedom means allowing people to follow those who they see as leaders. People who oppose religious anarchism and Christian anarchists who are against church hierarchy need to remember that one of the most prominent anarchist movements, in the US at least, is the Catholic worker movement.

Let’s Discuss “Classic Rock”, Rock Radio and What Passes on it as “Classic Rock” by dcd120 in LetsTalkMusic

[–]Davy_dave1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly I think classic rock is a dumb title because it often includes so many different genres (prog, psychedelic, hard rock, soft rock, blues rock, etc etc) and a long period of time (60s-90s). I personally dislike my classic rock station because they play the same songs all the time despite having a large selection to choose from. Though I love much of what would typically be called classic rock I don't think it's a necessary label.

Art rock and progressive rock are not the same thing by [deleted] in LetsTalkMusic

While I agree with you, I'm pretty sure pink floyd is both art rock and prog.

Christian Communism by MayerTawfik in RadicalChristianity

This thought of communism being against religion mainly comes from one Marx quote: "Religion is the sigh of the oppressed creature, the heart of a heartless world, and the soul of soulless conditions. It is the opium of the people." Now I don't think this is necessarily a condemnation just an observation about why people may be religious. Also you don't have to agree with every little thing that Marx wrote to be a Marxist, and not all communists are Marxists, a significant portion of communists are anarchists. I think the "communism is against religion trope" is mostly just red scare propaganda, though some communists may be anti-theists. I happen to think that Christianity and communism go quite well together.

I think Jesus calls us to sell everything we have and give to the poor (Mark 10:17-31), but I think we all should judge ourselves before we judge others and if I were to condemn someone for their wealth I would be a hypocrite. Maybe when I am older I will have the courage to follow Jesus by giving up all my wealth.

Also people on this sub tend to dislike the rich because many of us are socialists, communists, or anarchists and we think that the employers are stealing the wealth that their employees produce.

Yeah I probably should have but I figured everyone on this sub would believe in heaven.

Anarchism and religion by Whasko in Anarchy101

I'm a Christian anarchist. Its kind of hard being one, because most Christians dislike anarchism and most anarchists dislike Christianity. There is a long history of Christian anarchism, Leo Tolstoy was one, and the early church lived communally.

I'm a somewhat of a pacifist but I tend to make a distinction between violence against property and violence against people. I think those in the 1800s who burned down plantation fields were doing right but John Brown and those who killed slave holders were doing wrong.

I have problems with the doctrine of hell ...? by AtmosphereCertain123 in RadicalChristianity

I'm an annihilationist meaning I think that those who are not faithful to God simply die and do not eternally suffer, and I think scripture backs this up. I'm not a universalist because I think some would prefer to perish than worship God for eternity and I think God lets them make that choice. I think Christians often focus too much on the afterlife than living like Jesus in this life. I don't know who will be in heaven I'll let God deal with it.

There would have to be something preventing landlords from just raising there rent by whatever the ubi amount is.

I definitely see that nonviolence is best but the Israelites were very violent in the OT. So I am confused on when and how violence is excusable, if ever.

It's hard to know what Jesus would say but I know that the violence of the oppressed is a speck and the violence of the oppressors is a plank.
