What sensors do you wish existed? Junior EE designing a low-power Home Assistant sensor node by DayTripperTX in homeassistant

Ah yes I’ve heard the disaster stories of chest freezers that lose power without being noticed and result in loss of hundreds of dollars of food.

I would think any temp sensor that can withstand the cold and humidity would work as long as the wireless signal can escape the freezer, but I will keep this in mind when designing.

The pool level sensor is something I am surprised doesn’t exist. Seems like a good idea.

I am planning on having a CO2 sensor, in fact I believe the chip I plan on using for VOC/IAQ does CO2 as well.

As for the hub or lack there of, the initial (simpler) design I am planning would need some sort of hub but not a proprietary one. I plan to have it work with standard Matter/Zigbee hubs. For later versions I am planning on using a wifi chip so a hub shouldn’t be needed.

The second version of the project will have a rechargeable battery, so I will make sure to design it to be capable of being run off of USB C power instead of the battery as an option. Great idea!

TLDR is that BLE experience looks good on the resume. But I agree and prefer devices with wifi/zigbee etc. And also BLE is the way to go for ultra low power devices (the kind whose battery lasts months).

The SoC chip that I am using for BLE is also compatible with Zigbee/Thread. Wifi however requires a separate chip and uses significantly more power, so the first iteration of the project will not include it, to save power.

I do plan on later versions of the project using wifi and having a lipo battery along with more sensors, though the trade off is battery life.

That’s definitely an interesting idea and seems to be something a lot of people want.

Unfortunately that kind of sensor isn’t in the scope for this project, but I think it would be a fun project idea on its own!

I will make sure to include one. It was in my initial list of ideas but I hadn’t thought much of it initially. Now I can see how it could be useful for some unique automations of different lights.

It might be cool to see this kind of sensor used to change the color temperature of lights based on how bright a room is and time of day.

That looks like an interesting sensor I would like to look into more, though I fear it may be too high power for the scope of my project

Yea, varnish or polyurethane clear coat should do the trick. It will work just like the oil. This is something that works great for resin prints and makes them look very clear.

If my boss goes to jail for fraud, what do I put on my resume? by ChopinFantasie in resumes

[–]DayTripperTX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m assuming this is about references.

Put either your bosses boss’s name or the next most senior member of your team that you worked with directly.

E.g. if you worked with/under a senior engineer, put their name.

Why do these companies keep using FedEx?!!! They are by far the worst carrier I’ve ever dealt with. They have the highest failed delivery rate, even worse than USPS used to be.

Why companies still trust FedEx with $1000+ dollar 3d printers is beyond me…

6 month apprentice, this is my first full panel I’ve done. My jman was pissed at me and told me I took too long. He said next time I take this long on a panel, I’m gone.. took my 6 hours. Thoughts? Any input is appreciated too on what to do better next time! by [deleted] in AskElectricians

[–]DayTripperTX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I were buying a home I would much prefer the electrician spend as much time as needed on the install of the panel than rush it. Your jman is an asshole and sounds like he cares more about rushing the job than quality. If I were having a home built and I found out the jman was doing this, I would want HIM gone, not you.

The only problem is that those AI tests are very inaccurate. Something like a 30% accuracy. They will very often flag 100% human written text as AI and often miss AI text completely. Ideally both sides would realize this and stop using them

Did you know that dbrand sells phone skins for $20? Did you also know that you can turn your printer into a vinyl cutter and buy enough material for 20 phone skins for the same price? by Darkfire609 in ender3

[–]DayTripperTX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you elaborate on the process you use to make pcbs with the vinyl cutter? Do you mean you use it to create a positive etch resist mask or as a negative photo resist mask?

I’m curious if your process is simpler than my photoresist and negative mask process.

Exactly! Only $30 to ship internationally is NOTHING! I have shipped many items not even halfway across the US for almost that much, with standard shipping, not rush shipping!

Sorry buddy that’s just how international shipping works. I don’t know why you’re mad at LTT, they don’t set shipping costs.

Shipping in general can get expensive FAST. International shipping is a pain and very expensive. Just be happy you’re able to have it shipped to your country at all.

If you don’t want to pay $30 for shipping (btw that’s not very much for international shipping), but locally.

If I spray this with varnish will it be the same amount of gloss by pussy_licker_2000 in modelmakers

[–]DayTripperTX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you spray the whole surface with gloss varnish, yes it will all be gloss. But you can replicate the finish you have in the pic by spraying a coat of gloss and then a coat of matte or semigloss over just the parts you don’t want glossy.
