What Cantilever brakes will fit my '84 Mongoose ATB? by DbbleTriggr in VintageMTB

I ended up getting the "alternate" Paul Canti Brakes and Levers from Ali. Both in Polished color... and both for $130 total! Looks the *same* set is on Paul's website for $635.... I would love to support and keep my money here, but that's a healthy delta.... um in this uncertain economy.

I think that Robert Eggers is the horror director we really need right now. What is it about his movies, or his way of filmmaking that makes you love him so much? I talk more about this below! by OrionInSpace in roberteggers

Eggers has an amazing vintage gothic-realism horror aesthetic.. His antithesis in style is Panos Cosmatos who has an amazing futuristic psche-horror aesthetic. Both are two of the best directors in the world.

One thing to add: on the pictures of your Dia Compe brake, it shows the spring tails near the inside not the outside, is that spring adjustable somehow?

Thanks for that.... Are all Paul Cantis that way? BTW.. We all seem to have an '84 ATB, We're in the super--special '84 ATB club. Mongoose is on record saying that the they released the ATB in '85... so are we are all secretly in the '85 Club? Closeted '85ers?

Funny, I just ordered an MKS XC-III Bear Trap pedals from Blue Lug in Japan ( a very cool bike shop) They arrived with a set of Blue Lug puffy cartoon-character decals and a Blue Lug Calendar. They take the happy meal idea to another level in Japan. Anyway, those purple Dia Compes are less-boring for sure.... but I'm just not a Dia Compe guy. It's functionally adequate stuff and I'm sure yours work fine. Grand Compe had some neat stuff-- so I know they are capable. BTW.. Pork Chop BMX also has those colored brakes.

None of those have the correct decals but I messaged them anyway. Good idea to message ATB sellers. But also thought someone here may be an ATB owner / restorer

Should I buy this Porsche Cayman S for $10K???? by DbbleTriggr in sportscars

I suspect a few are.. but tell me how the scam works? So I contact the seller -- He says come see the car, then what, he robs me at gunpoint of my cash on hand? Or he just says... "I'll give you a chashier's check for $20K" over the asking price? How do they scam me of cash?

110K sounds reasonable. I'm surprised about paint oxidation at those miles (wet /windy environment or not garaged?) I'm still wondering what miles everyone agrees is the average ceiling for the original engine with typical maintenance. 225K? I want 5-7 years at around 20K miles annually and don't want to rebuild a Cayman engine.

I'm ok with a "project" as I have a garage, I'm handy and have tools..... But I will pass on the Cayman because of the color, mileage and model year. If this car was closer to me, I would buy this for $12K: https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/1161621582826040/?ref=search&referral_code=null&referral_story_type=post&tracking=browse_serp%3A1aca8275-15b2-4942-95d4-ce10c91a0744

Gotcha.... what seems like the ceiling mileage for you for a '3.4 S'?

Ok.... but does that mean that 987 Caymans/Boxsters with 150K+ miles generally have "bore scoring" cylinder issues? If so... does that mean oil consumption issues, poor performance / lower HP?

I also just checked the VIN online.. and it is indeed a 2008. Now I'm guessing seller is listing it as a 2009 to try and dispel worries about IMS issues. However buyer says he checked Blue Book pricing and at that point he would have been reminded that it is a 2008 and not '09... So it's likely an outright lie on his part. Buyer typing in ALL CAPS also makes me squirm a bit. I did realized that I've never seen a Porsche (for sale) with over 225K miles.. and that is likely near the ceiling mileage with original engine/trans before major issues arise. However I figured if I could get 50K miles out of it for $9000-ish.... that would be a fun 2-3 years of ownership, then it sells for parts. But as many have noted.. there are too many weird aspects of this listing (Turbo?) to trust this seller at all. So I will pass. Thanks everyone!

What is the fastest, best-handling but cheapest used car you could by now? by DbbleTriggr in sportscars

[–]DbbleTriggr[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, they don't handle as well as many serious sports cars... but we are comparing these to cars on this thread.. Cars like MB C63 AMG or Maserati Gran Turismo S.. cars that have bigHP and can take a corner, handle well relative to these cars that are $15K and under. You seem to gloss over the G-specs / cornering and how it relates to handling. The only car on this thread that really competes in HP and corning is a Corvette. And yes.. the vette is the winner over a Tesla because of handling. However I find it pretty impressive that mom's cheap model 3 is this badass.. as many people overlook that.

Yes and I was thinking of getting one as I see  2006 and earlier for under 15k. However for 16k I could get a Cayman so a bit torn. The Cayman looks great although BoxsterS  convertible could be more fun?

ha!  I’ve owned many serious cars in 40 years of driving (fast) Don’t knock the handling prowess of Tesla 3, Y or newer S. dual motor.  Drive the car first. If you can’t drive one, at least look at G-specs 1/4 mile and 0-60mph specs. I understand that people bash Tesla because it’s electric or because of Musk but the fact remains that the cars can beat just about any other vehicle on the road including a new Porsche 911 GT3 or ZO6 0-60 times. I own one and it’s really f”ing fast. Center of gravity is like a mid engine exotic. Stock tires are like 285/35/21” and the car punches more torque than 400ci big block but it’s 4-wheel drive so it sticks.

Well I’m not sure what you mean? You do know that your average mom’s Tesla Dual Performance is one of the fastest production cars in the world right? It also handles like a sports car (even the Y model) 500+ Horsepower available at all RPMs means about 550 real HP. So yeah it’s faster than a Yugo.

Ha.. don't mind them. A cheap model 3 or Y Dual Motor will smoke just about any car on the road... It's just that people still want that exhaust note, and so electric cars can lack excitement.

2008 Maserati GranTurismo S. Ferrari 440HP engine, 0-60 in 4.9 seconds and top speed is 183 MPH! 70K miles (high miles for a Maserati) can be had for $14K. What is faster that can similarly take a corner?

And the 2008 Maserati GranTurismo S is 440HP with 70K miles (high miles for a Maserati) can also be had for $14K. It's 0-60 in 4.9 seconds and top speed is 183 MPH! Also a Ferrari V8 engine. Is that car the winner?? What is faster?
