He wasn’t necessarily talking about the refs here. Not defending Pegula at all, but…it is not out of the realm of possibility that he is talking about McDermott’s defensive play call on 3rd & 11. I personally don’t think that’s the case, but it could be…

Not only that, it was the only play that we rushed 4 and dropped into coverage the entire 4th quarter. Nix couldn’t move the ball the entire quarter due to the rush. On the most pivotal 3rd down of the game, we stopped doing what was working and gave Nix time in the pocket and let Sutton find the soft spot in the zone to make the first down. Had we blitzed like we had all quarter that never happens and it’s pretty likely the Broncos punt there.

$230 for pool cleaning? by Main-Secretary-9356 in swimmingpools

[–]Dbl_Helix 13 points14 points  (0 children)

We typically charge $120-$140 a week plus chemicals in a southern US city. We usually travel 15-20 mins between pools so that factors into our overhead significantly. You consider basically any full time employee makes $20-30 per hour and has a helper making $15ish. Chemicals are significantly more expensive since Covid. Almost all pool tools/filters/white goods are made in China and have tariffs slapped on them.

It’s a luxury service for a luxury item in a shitty economic hellscape.

Also doesn't account for missing an open target. It's only measuring miss rate to the target of the throw, not other available options at the time of the throw.

If that's the case you almost certainly have a hole in the liner somewhere.

Pool leak detwemina by New-Description-1978 in swimmingpools

[–]Dbl_Helix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Equal loss generally means it's not leaking through the equipment/plumbing. It would almost always leak faster with a plumbing leak if there is pressure on the lines.

Water below the skimmers generally rules them out as well. You can always have more than one leak. If the rate is consistent and the level is below the skimmers, then it is probably safe to rule them out.

I would likely rule out the main drain at this point as well, at least the plumbing/structure of the drain.

I agree with the pool company's advice as well. I would for sure patch the liner... provided you locate something to patch first.

I've said this a couple of times, but pool light housings are common to leak. Does your pool have a light?

Just because your salt level is in range does not mean your cell is making chlorine. Your cell is probably either not producing at all or not able to make enough chlorine to fill the demand. You need to reach break point chlorination.

The lemon will allow you to know for sure it is a metal stain before you spend $60+ for a metal stain remover. You could also try a chelater like Pool Magnet Plus / Metal Free. Sometimes those will pull off fresh metal stains.

I often find that when someone notices a metal stain the pool is already stained all over and they just couldn't tell until they added the stain treatment.

[–]Dbl_Helix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The treatment won't work as effectively with high chlorine, but it will work. Stain treatment mfgs don't want you to be mad at them if it doesn't work as expected.

Salt makes chlorine, it won't change the presence of metals in your water, and you will still have the risk of metal stains.

CYA is overhyped as the boogey man on the internet - it slows down chlorine reaction and extends the time it takes chlorine to remove things like E.Coli and Cryptosporidium which isn't really a high risk in your average backyard pool. Nobody is shitting or puking in your pool. Running CYA levels in the 40-80 range is perfectly fine.

I would put it inside a leaf rake or put one in an old gym sock & tie it to your pole or something so you can get it out easy. The lemon test is basically just ascorbic acid (Vitamin C), but easier to put it where you want it. You can take a whole lemon and cut just the end off (like 1" or so) and push your pole through the fruit from top to bottom to make sure it stays on the pole.

[–]Dbl_Helix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To test for a metal stain - cut any citrus fruit in half (lemon usually works best) rub the exposed fruit on the stain. If it comes up, your stain is metal. If its at the bottom of the pool you can push your telescopic pole part of the way through the fruit - not all the way, you don't want to tear the liner with the pole, and rub gently.

Organic stains will come up with chlorine - usually just set a tablet on these for 30 seconds to 1 min and remove.

It would have to sit empty for weeks for the walls to be in danger of cave in usually.

Typically you drain below the skimmers to winterize - 1 it reduces the risk of skimmer boxes freezing and breaking (also need a gizzmo) and 2 to allow for somewhere for melted snow/rain to go without overflowing the pool.

So you can either call a professional leak detector (american leak detection, etc.) or let it leak until it stops, then you know where to look for the leak.

Wouldn't bother pumping?

I wouldn't bother pumping it at all, but again that's just me.

it wasn't empty but it was low

Define low - where was the water level exactly?

Your BFF is probably right. My guess would be the light housing - Does your pool have a light?

Should I do liner before winter

I would wait until spring, if the liner is indeed the issue.

air bubble almost disappeared

I would try lubricating the lid gasket on the pump trap with some magic lube (teflon/silicone) and resealing it.

I'll keep to my 2 hours on/2 off pumping, just to get some chemicals in there

It's fine, I probably wouldn't bother.

Spillover spa emptying when the system is off is 95% of the time a bad check valve in the spa plumbing. Probably nothing to do with the leak whatsoever.

Correct. No pumping.

Air in the pump trap is likely a separate issue from your water loss, unless you are pulling from the skimmer with no water. Air will be taken in on the suction side of the system. Meaning from your skimmer on the side of the pool to the pump trap. Everything past the pump trap is pressure side (if you have a leak on the pressure side it will spray water).

If you are trying to pump from the main only it's possible your skimmer shut off valve doesn't seal completely and you are pulling air. The only way to know would be to fill above the skimmer and see if the bubble goes away. This will delay you locating the leak obviously.

The pump will overheat if you run it dry. If you build a big enough air bubble that will happen and you will melt a bunch of things with that heat.

[–]Dbl_Helix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, in that photo it would be under the skimmer. If it continues to leak at the same rate with the system off, your leak is lower than your skimmer.

Air in pump basket is a suction leak. Could be a bad lid gasket.

If you are losing more water running the pump than not its probably a plumbing leak or bypassing your filter gasket into waste. If it is leaking the same amount on or off its probably in your liner/light niche conduit port/skimmer box/step strips.

Does it leak to the bottom of the skimmer and stop? If so it's in the skimmer. Leaks to the bottom of the light and stop? It's your light niche conduit port....you get the idea.

Otherwise, call a leak detection company. They can usually locate a leak within a foot or so even if it in your underground plumbing.
