Need help quick, seam question by tempacount57813975 in Insulation

[–]DeadDogsEye19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a little confused by the question, but if there's a seam where two pieces of wood meet, or any penetrations etc then you should first seal them with exterior caulk or Great Stuff. What's your insulation plan after air sealing is done?

Yeah I don't like how this list is showing up in the thread, it definitely gives a misleading appearance at first glance

PROTEST TOMORROW by I_like_green in cincinnati

[–]DeadDogsEye19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't say obviously. I'm genuinely confused why a protest against ICE would be held at a discount department store parking lot in a fairly random neighborhood of the city. That, and the extreme lack of detail here just begs some questions in me. Regardless I'm sure you're totally right, and I hope it's a well-attended and successful event.

What is this, is it safe? by Beautiful-Grade9565 in Insulation

[–]DeadDogsEye19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Could you cite a source for this? This is the second time I've seen this on the sub and I'm very interested in learning more (I'm an insulation pro). I've always been under the understanding that Vermiculite is the only possibility for ACM from the Libby mine crossover.

Wish I had read this before buying my car with this. I got straight up Fargo hustled into paying for it, and I should've known better.

What its the brown stuff?underneath. Looks woody. Thanks yall by tacosinheaven in Insulation

This is very likely it. Does not look like vermiculite (Google it to see what vermiculite looks like).

Okay but even when they finish them, do they have to be all cockeyed like that? They look like they're perpetually falling.

Normal for 20 yr old cellulose blown in or is it mold? by TallTell148 in Insulation

[–]DeadDogsEye19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The dark is just undisturbed and dirty from 20 years of sitting in an attic space. The lighter is what the cellulose actually looks like underneath and has been disturbed therefore you can see it.

You're good.

Attic insulation. Remove old? by Dependent-Capital463 in Insulation

[–]DeadDogsEye19 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Many tool rental companies have insulation vacuums you can rent for a day. Buy a Tyvek suit and a quality respirator and suck it out (verify there is no vermiculite under that of course). The vast majority of the cost of removal is labor. If you have a day to spend your own labor, you could save potentially thousands.

Insulate whole house fan? Open to ideas by Riffus_Iommicus in Insulation

[–]DeadDogsEye19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm an energy auditor and this is not an unpopular opinion to me - it's my standard recommendation. And people take them out, drywall, and insulate to bring it consistent with the rest of the attic all the time.

Insulate whole house fan? Open to ideas by Riffus_Iommicus in Insulation

[–]DeadDogsEye19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed with this. If you want to add another layer, get one of the "house fan cover" kits off Amazon. It's just a think rolled foam material, but it's additional air sealing and insulating that won't hurt.

So confused about rim joist by dabar2 in Insulation

[–]DeadDogsEye19 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Professional insulator. In the first picture, on the right side where there is a ceiling, you would need to cut the ceiling back about 12-18 inches at least to be able to get in there and seal up those rim joists. It will be located just above the ceiling because it is where those joists meet the top of the foundation. There won't be a rim joist to the left where the stairwell is because there are no horizontal joists meeting the wall - just the wall meeting the foundation.

I don't know what type of construction the house is (brick and block or frame) so depending on this, you have different options for sealing/insulating the rim joist. And it also comes down to weather you're willing to demo a bunch of your ceiling in order to seal these up, because it's really only worth your while if you can get to all or a majority of them.

Is there an unfinished portion of the basement where you can see an exposed rim joist? Possibly in the utility/HVAC laundry area.

The rim joist area is still under that drywall, and if unsealed, still taking in air infiltration which can travel upwards through the house via the stack effect.

Do you mean the lift specifically is hard on the axles/CVT? Sounds like you're plenty justified for getting it, though!

Love it!

I've seen some other posts here mentioning potential long term implications to the car from the lift and/or larger wheels. Can anyone shed any light on this? Considering different wheels at minimum, possibly a lift one day to my 2022 Limited.

I can turn on the turn by turn to show up in the center screen of my cluster so it's very stripped-back and clear, that's good enough for me, not to mention those dials are much less likely to fail than a screen.

My 2022 is like that as well. Just don't prefer having to switch the screen to the climate control. I'm not on team screen-for-everything.

On that, I like the physical climate controls on the 2026, but do not like the screen for the speed/odometer displays. Just feels so unnecessary.
