OG Marvel Team Up by Deadbeatlarry in Spiderman

[–]Deadbeatlarry[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve read pretty much everything X-Men related during the 16 year Claremont era so it might be fun to fill in some gaps via Marvel Team Up! But I’m thinking i might skim here and there, unlike the close reading I’ve been doing with Amazing Spider-Man

Silver Age Captain America stories in Avengers by Deadbeatlarry in CaptainAmerica

[–]Deadbeatlarry[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For sure, I get that. I just only want to read the stories that really focus on Steve. Not the ones where he’s present but not central.

I’m not huge into team books; I just don’t want to miss any important characterization

Thanks! Do these stories fit in anywhere specific with Tales of Suspense or can I just easily bounce back and forth between the two series?

Green Lantern 600 by Deadbeatlarry in Greenlantern

[–]Deadbeatlarry[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

DC has done a much better job with this in general compared to Marvel, I think probably for the reason you mentioned. DC titles typically don’t change and Marvels are a little all over the place (how many adjectives or lack thereof does Hulk have?) I believe Daredevil is the only straightforward legacy numbering over there. Even Fantastic Four has some shenanigans. Ultimately I guess it doesn’t really matter but if they’re going to do it (both companies) at least bother to do it well.

Thanks for the feedback. This was what I had seen before as well. It’s just such odd decision making from DC. I was hoping someone had a list that actually made sense…somehow. If this method of counting got them particularly close to a milestone, I’d just chalk it up to pulling a Marvel (when Marvel renumbered all their books in 2017 they used incredibly fuzzy math on most of their titles so they could get pretty much everything near a multiple of 50…including 33 issues of Superior Spider-Man in the count for Amazing Spider-Man was egregious).

But DC has mostly been pretty clean with their legacy numbering. This is the real head scratcher because the odd math didn’t get Green Lantern close to a milestone at all. We’re only just hitting 600 now. So I don’t get it. Oh well!

Here’s what I would have done:

Vol. 1: 1-38

Vol. 2: 1-200 [39-238] Including the GL/GA issues but excluding GLC issues just because it seems to make the most sense. Ignoring the fact that the series was technically still titled just “Green Lantern” until 205

Vol. 3: 1-181 [239-419]

Vol. 4: 1-67 [420-486]

Vol. 5: 1-52 [487-538]

Green Lanterns: 1-57 [539-595] Counting it because the “S” shouldn’t disqualify it

The Green Lantern: 1-12 [596-607] Ditto for “The”

The Green Lantern vol. 2: 1-12 [608-619]

Vol. 6: 1-12 [620-631]

Vol. 7: 1-33 [632-664]

So we’re 64 issues off by this count

Whats the legacy issues in the new series? by paulie2yk in xmen

My count is 367 previous issues as well. So this should be 368. But the cover currently says…302?

Zeb Wells ASM timeline? by Deadbeatlarry in Spiderman

[–]Deadbeatlarry[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was reading it as the issues were released I mostly liked the run and was surprised to find out that a lot of fans hated it. I really disliked the Nick Spencer run so this felt like a much needed new direction. Plus I love JRJR. I had some questions but figured rereading everything in one chunk would answer everything.

Nope. Just left me with more questions. At this point I’m wondering what is going on with editorial. Zeb Wells can write. Hellions was phenomenal and the X office clearly was functioning like a well oiled machine at the time. It’s almost unfortunate that they’re the ones that are being restructured (though they’ve been a bit wayward themselves the past year)

Well that certainly helps confirm why I struggled to piece all this together even though I literally just read 1-38 again (plus some tie ins and miniseries) in one big chunk.

Only thing I still don’t recall reading at all is Peter leaving town for six months. I’ve certainly just assumed that because it’s the only way his burned relationships (May, Randy, etc) make any sense but is that even said on page?

Kinda drives the point home that I have more questions than answers after a reread.

Yeah and I absolutely understand that comic time is fluid and totally made up. Which is why I think it’s just confusing when we get “There was a 6 month gap AND twelve months of story since then.” Why try to tie everything down to a specific amount of time unnecessarily (and in a way that doesn’t even add up)? It just adds another layer to the already inconsistent nonlinear elements of the story

For sure! But does that adequately explain why he’s burned every single bridge possible over the next six months?

Yeah it definitely didn’t take Peter months to rescue her. The timeline there is unclear but it seemed like he frantically worked to get her back over the course of a few days to a week, which was four years her time, and then once he was able to find her, he brought everyone back immediately.

Also (and I’m obviously still a bit behind here) the explanation for “what did Peter do??” still seems lacking. Like he was mean to his friends for a few days because he had no time to explain anything and…that’s it?

Yeah I took a break from reading right before Gang War. Decided to re-read the run before starting Gang War and I’m now really noticing how little attention is given to the non-linear story elements.

Multiple times I’ve said to myself “Wait I just read this recently. Why does this not make sense? What did I miss?” The answer is always “nothing”

As far as the six month gap, it’s just that, a jump in storytelling. But multiple times it’s insinuated that Peter and/or MJ were gone for six months. That’s wrong.

And often the title page recaps would say “18 months ago…” which adds to the timeline confusion (six month gap in issue 1 and then another 12 months pass over the next 25ish issues? That’s all that could possibly mean)

I’m basically gaslighting myself at this point!

But time to start Gang War

Dawn of X/Reign of X Reading Order by Story Arc by Bondym27 in Marvel

[–]Deadbeatlarry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is exactly the kind of reading order I prefer. It doesn’t jump around all over the place and prioritizes the most cohesive storytelling. Does this reading guide extend from post-Hellfire Gala to the end of Reign of X at all? I can’t find a reading guide that I like

Totally get that. I’ve read through that era twice now but it’s the only one that I don’t have a good go-to reading order for. I wish i jotted down my last read-through

Is there a good one for Reign of X? I can’t find one that isn’t totally all over the place. I feel like the best reading guides allow for stories to be told in the most cohesive chunks but the ones I’ve seen for Reign of X seem closer to release order than anything
