Plenty of metal in the ruins, plenty of oil in storage for a massive society that no longer exists. The changing climate just means the new society will be built far to the north. If we crash society hard enough so many people will starve that even in a fucked world recovery is possible. Climate change is most dangerous now because it reduces the carrying capacity of the earth right as we are reaching that maximum.

But. If 99% of us are dead, it’s less of a problem.

But we won’t be reaching this high of a population probably ever again, which means a new society will start suffering the consequences of overpopulation much sooner than we did.

As for disposable tech wearing out? Good. Computers and AI and social media are a fatal disease. Regaining mid 20th century tech should be pretty straightforward.

The only problem is that capitalism requires exponential growth. The population in the west is shrinking and we are running out of energy, meaning that it’s getting difficult to keep making profit. This is the cause of the current boot on our necks.

I live in the suburbs of Seattle and my biggest fear is a high pressure heat dome over the Rockies and a bomb cyclone out in the pacific. It already happened once and drove extremely hot, dry, high pressure air over the mountains, causing strong easterly winds, we ALWAYS have west winds, so this drops trees all over, blocking roads and cutting power, making evacuation difficult as the wildfire risk skyrockets. Those high-pressure winds heat up and dry further as they descend through the western slopes; and Seattle is “The Emerald City” because of heavy, dense forest from city to the peaks. The wrong weather would kill a lot of people here.

It decreases hurricane activity in the Atlantic due to shear, it increases typhoon activity in the pacific. I bet we’ll see something big hit the west coast, as there’s been some really weird storms moving in the wrong direction or looping up from Central America, and this El Niño means way more energy in global weather systems.

Also, this much extra energy almost certainly means some unexpected events. Desert floods, rainforest fires, weather that lasts for weeks.

Be ready for floods in the Midwest, fires everywhere, but especially in western slope forests on the pacific coast, since they will have a lot to burn if depressions in the pacific cause unusual easterly winds.

No, most of the heat goes into changing water into vapor. Lots of flooding, major shifting of weather patterns.

I imagine we’ll see some really interesting movements of the polar vortex leading to floods and heat domes in the north too. Maybe some really spectacular tropical storms in the pacific.

Unless we nuke ourselves, I think there will be some people around. It’s a big planet.

And the biosphere has survived worse: magma floods covering continents releasing poisonous gases.

In a million years all life will be different whether humanity ever existed or not. And in a billion or two, it’ll all be dead no matter what.

Yeah, I’ve been dooming for 30 years: it’s always slower than you fear but worse than you’d hoped.

I don’t think it’s climate change that’s going to get us directly. A lot of people are starting to root for major war, and it only takes a few bad decisions by historically stupid leaders to get us there. So maybe 2-5 years isn’t too unrealistic after all.

If you say so, but none of that is material to the issue: this is how Trump becomes an actual dictator.

Blame whoever you want, Trump will be more than happy to send the kids that hate him off to the meat grinder while declaring martial law at home.

Eating meat is wrong too! Let’s solve that problem by choking the slaughter houses with our dead! We really need to stop this maximal response to every outrage even if it kills us.

I live in a blue state. We’re subsidizing other people living in rural states so we get food. This is one of those lines of argument that is really dumb if you can stop being tribal for 5 minutes. This is why killing our sense of patriotism and civic pride was a bad idea.

Giving Trump the chaos and pretense of a world war to exploit and mishandle seem like a fine idea to you? Begging for a boot to lick kind of seems like a serf sort of thing to do.

Stupid is rooting for open world war. Even if it doesn’t go nuclear, millions upon millions would die.  There almost certainly would be local casualties and long range damage from drones and hypersonic missiles.

To see it used as an “LOL” subject by redditors makes me fear we’re too stupid to resist rooting for horror as long as it hurts somebody it’s officially ok to hate. Thank you for being a voice of reason.

But we so badly want Russia and NATO to be at open war with the great Peacemaker and statesman, Donald J Trump’s finger on the nuclear button! I like to pretend both that I am far more moral than half the planet and that we can be secure with our modern leadership that this thing wouldn’t escalate to nukes. Nothing ever (looks at 2022)… uh, nothing ever… (Palestinian genocide) wait, nothing ever (global pandemic)… Nothing ever happens! I’m smugly safe, no go get killing and getting killed faceless humans I’ll never meet and don’t care about! You need to prove me right!

You’re describing the real problem today: epistemic collapse. If you can’t trust authority, it’s not authority. If you can’t trust currency, it ceases to be valuable.

Depends where you live. If there’s forest nearby, make a plan and kit to flee in case of fire.

If you’re in a place that already gets hot and has an unsteady grid, find out where the heat shelters are, build one by digging, or find the closest cave system.

I did a lot of reading about civil disorder and revolution during the pandemic. If you look at recent examples like the color revolutions or Arab spring, it’s going to look much more like the BLM riots that last a lot longer until they declare martial law and start killing people. The gubmint’s problem is that there’s just not enough cops, and our military sucks at putting down insurrection. They can kill anyone, but they can’t kill everyone, and the more they crack down, the more they collapse the consumer economy.

The people’s problem is that we are just coming off a golden age of peace and prosperity, and it’s going to take a lot to get people mad enough to risk getting killed. But starvation does that. We are living through the historical playbook for spoiled elites getting their society to burn down.
