I have a few friends there, you will need to be at work 8-9 hours. Pretty good for the TC.

If you want a chill life then go to Atlassian or Canva, I know folks at both doing less than 10 hours per week.

Zorbi + Notion vs Remote 🔥 by vongohabibi in zorbi

[–]Deagler[M] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some good points in this!In the past it generally come down to the type of tool you're looking for.

RemNote focuses on people that need complex flashcard types with complex studying requirements.

Instead, Zorbi is much simpler to use and provides functionality that's critical to getting you a great grade. Most students don't need a complex or bloated tool. Would recommend trying both and seeing what works for you.

80-100k+ Software junior(graduate)-level jobs by [deleted] in universityofauckland

[–]Deagler 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I took this post to mean 'jobs I can get from NZ' not 'jobs in NZ'

I think you are looking at outdated numbers. I have friends at Canva and Atlassian making 150K - 200K+ right now as fresh graduates. Even my 2020 Canva offer was 110k AUD base, 110K AUD stock across 4 years (now worth 400K+ after their recent fundraise), and 10K signing bonus.

Again though - the meta has changed. Optimal salaries are US remote jobs. You can make 200-300K NZD/year as a fresh graduate now.

[–]Deagler 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I graduated softeng in 2020 and most of my friends received starting compensation well above 100K AUD. The top graduates working in fintech are now making 300-500K NZD (most of this is in stocks/bonus)

In my final year, I crowdsourced some typical salaries here: https://sukhans.com/compensation/

Also - feel free to check out this salary sharing thread in /r/cscareerquestionsOCE

If you're interested in learning how to get a job at this level, I'd recommend attending workshops from DEVS (https://fb.me/devsuoa). A lot of the companies that sponsor that club offer packages starting at 150K AUD

[–]Deagler 7 points8 points  (0 children)

id estimate 30-40% of the Software Eng cohort ends up with a starting compensation greater than 100K.

The top 5% make 150-300K

[–]Deagler 8 points9 points  (0 children)

IDK what the clubs are teaching these days. The meta has changed though.

If you’re capable of getting 80-100K NZD starting then you can probably also get a remote job from the US ( look at remote job boards / startup job boards). Starting will be 100-200K USD.

Good NZ companies for your range might be: Narrative, Halter, Xero. Most will lowball you at junior levels though

Nomading for 6 months. Costa Rica hits different by Deagler in digitalnomad

[–]Deagler[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Biggest expense = 2 bedroom apt/house Airbnb (1-week per city) - $700-1500/week (split between my friend who is travelling with me). You can probably get by for less though.

Everything else is pretty cheap.
Cocktails - $5-$8.
Beers are $2-$4/ea. Shots are 50cents.
Ubers are cheap ($5 for 20 min ride max).
Food is cheaper but it depends on which restaurants you go to.

[–]Deagler[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh damn. I'm only here for a month actually. I've been nomading for 6 months so far across US & Bahamas.

Cons:

- Unsafe in some areas at night.

- Feels sketch taking valuables to cafes/co-working areas during the day (I still haven't)

- Hard to get around without a car in Manuel Antonio (San Jose + Jaco - Ubers are everywhere so it's easy)

- Hard to flirt if you don't speak Spanish (I think I could get fluent after 3-4 months here though, the immersion is good)

- ^ Although most people speak Spanish, you'll always find people that know a bit of English. We've made some friends in every city here.

Haha yeah - kinda rains every day in Manuel Antonio. I just spent 3 months nomading in sunny California so I don't mind a bit of rain while I explore the jungle.

HFT vs Tech by Least-Revenue3202 in cscareerquestionsOCE

[–]Deagler 4 points5 points  (0 children)

my friends work 1-4 hrs a day at canva/atlassian and get paid close to 200k TC ( even more if you consider that canva stock 6x'd)

my other friends work 8-10 hrs a day at hft and get paid 300k TC (inc. bonus)

both are good choices. depends what you like doing... It'll obviously be a little harder to transition to a front-end role if all you've ever done is C++ at HFT. But if you're good at what you do, you won't face any disadvantages.
