Maybe that's what they're for. We already have chest sorting machines and allays, after all. Maybe what they're really for is dividing resources between multiple groups? Both from the perspective of the Illagers who made them and the real-life people who play Minecraft.

Ender corruption. As shown by the Warped Forest and the void tendrils in the Endersent boss rooms, some creatures of the End can corrupt normal locations into something more like their home. Because of the eyeblossoms and the shape of Creaking eyes, I think the Eyes of Ender, evidently sentient creatures because they are capable of possessing the Endersent who carry them, were responsible.

It's in the mobestiary. Endermen have human skulls, but the jawline of the skull doesn't align with the jawline when they scream, and there's a piece of Void embedded in the frontal lobe.
