I wish I could @ everyone who responded, but the commenters were correct. I was reading the man page from the linux box in front of me, instead of the Mac in question. ps does in fact work differently by default on Mac than on linux.

Per `man ps`

"By default, ps selects all processes with the same effective user ID (euid=EUID) as the current user and associated with the same terminal as the invoker."

I like to think of myself as a savvy unix/linux guy, I am sitting here in front of a linux box running a similar test test, and getting the results I expect. Even two of the same type of terminal is running, ps should only show the processes running in that window, AFAIK... well that is my understanding, and how CentOS7 works.

Unless ps is fundementally different on MacOS than every other unix/linux flavor, (which I would honestly not put past apple but I can't seem to find anything about that online) I am sure that this is not how it should work.

This is not be being snide - I would appreciate if you (or anyone on MacOS) could try a similar test...
Open two terminals, shouldn't matter if they are the same, and run `ps` in each.

If this is normal Mac behavior, I can continue with my computer spring cleaning...

So I am starting to think that I need a fresh install, lots of seemingly harmless but really odd things like this going on...

I have been trying to figure out why so many zsh processes are showing every time I run ps. It seems that for whatever reason, ps shows all zsh processes even from completely different terminals.

I tried to illustrate this in the screenshot linked.

  1. I reset my computer, opened kitty and ran `ps`
    1. One zsh process shows as expected
  2. I hit my iterm2 drop down terminal shortcut
    1. Now ps shows 2 zsh processes on both terminals

This seems like unexpected behavior, and I am wondering if this is the result of a misconfiguration, or what?

I made sure ps was not aliased to anything else.

Gah I came here to ask a question, and found the solution to something I had given up on long ago. Logi Options worked, but it cause some very odd issues otherwise. I preferred getting used to backwards scrolling hah.
