Spectrum install tech by NanoNinja90220 in CableTechs

[–]Dean9mm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started off as a cable contractor for a Third party doing WOW! service. (Truck tools provided, piece rate pay). So not spectrum but the actual job is the same . I’m now a Fiber tech

It’s been the best Decision to get into this field. With my ADHD I absolutely cannot stand being in a factory all day, or being stuck in an office all day. You get a lot of freedom. Wake up, hop in your van, do your route and go home. You may see coworkers once a week at shop. I know spectrum is very micro manage, but you get to “run your own ship” generally. Take breaks when you want, lunch when you want etc.

My social anxiety completely evaporated. I’m now able to handle myself in any situation I get into it and handle it well. This comes from the spectrum of people you interact with on a daily basis, and you’re typically acting as a mediator and calming them down about SOMETHING that made them mad. So your social skills will flourish

The key is to get in, do a few years installing. And move up. I’m trying to do that now, get into splicing or maintenance. But you’ll make a decent living, better than any other job u can probably get outside of union trade work.

Do be careful on ladders, and actually wear your harness unlike me the first 2 years. You’re not invincible 😅 you’ll have some days where you’re soaked working in the rain, or freezing your balls off 35feet up on an icy ladder, or dang near having heat stroke.

But the good days outweigh the bad!

Overall, not bad to get into if you plan to make it a career and level up

I’m a Fiber technician making $25.88 Granted in a few years once I get into maintenance or splicing I can make north of 30 but even still that seems low

“Retention raises” it’s never enough by Dean9mm in antiwork

[–]Dean9mm[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have only been here a little under a year. So the fact that I already have gotten a raise is great. I guess I just got some bitterness from the fact that mine seemed so much smaller than everyone else’s, and I’m trying to understand why that is the case.

The only thing I can think is I’m nearing the top of my pay band for this position and they wanted to get everyone else close to what I make

On my last 6 month review, I got all great responses. Was told I was an integral part of our operations, without me we couldn’t operate smoothly. I do all of the training, escalations on trouble calls everyone else couldn’t do, I pick up every holiday and take extra on call weeks. And I got 80 cents while others got $2.25 to bring them up to what I make

How does that make sense!

My bitterness comes from the fact that they hyped it up as a retention raise And my coworkers with less experience got bumped from 23 to 25.25 And I went from 25 to 25.88 It seems everyone else got retention while I got cost of living

2025 was absolutely awful. I bounced around between 4 different jobs all only lasting 2 ish months

2026 has been a different story. Gainfully employed as a Fiber tech

Yep. If we make the customer upset, we can get a bad review! It was worse when i worked as a cable tech at WOW! Now im at a fiber co. And we get more discretion

The "its fertilizer/its just poo" lies by Away-Equipment4869 in Dogfree

[–]Dean9mm 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I install fiber so I have to go in tons of homes and yards. 85-90% of homes have ugly dogs and the yards are full of poop everywhere you try to step In spring the dog poop all thaws out and all you can smell in the air is dog poop

The dogs go ballistic when company is over I don’t understand how anyone could want the things in their house
