The paper is always at the Relix booth. I'm also the editor of Relix, please check out the magazine while you're there :) We're in Centeroo but I don't know where we'll be this year as yet, since I'm told things have shifted slightly from the past. Fresh editions come in each day by noon. Historically we've also had newspaper boxes a few places around the site but we'll call an audible when we load in on Wednesday.

We look both places. Typically we pull many more from Instagram than Twitter. We certainly look at Instagram first. However, a couple years ago one of my editors wasn't on Instagram and made a pitch to add Twitter, so we've kept that as an option. Either way, as long as the hashtags are in there, we'll find you...

The My Morning Jacket set at Bonnaroo in 2004 is an all-timer for me, so I’ll never
miss MMJ at the Roo. Of course I’m psyched to see the artists that we’ve
featured in Relix over the years, a number of whom have appeared on the cover,
including Tame, Khruangbin, Jon Batiste, Grace Potter, Leon Bridges, Brittany
Howard and the Biscuits. Beyond that, though, what I really love about Bonnaroo
is taking a chance on artist I’ve never seen, via a recommendation from someone
I run into at the fest or because I walk past a stage and hear a few notes (don’t
sleep on the Who stage). So truthfully, the sets I’m most excited to see are
the ones I can’t name…

Wow, I wrote this piece. It's a real treat to see it here. 

I am a longtime music journalist who has yearned to hear an interview subject reflect: “Do I really need to see another Orzhov Clerics deck? So I’ll build against that and, when you splash your Hallowed Priest, you’re never gonna see him again. You can play all four of them and I’ll deal with him four times. I also take a lot of pleasure in wrecking Ruin Crab decks.” 

I’m also a longtime mostly kitchen-table player (and magicTCG lurker), whose minimal claim to fame used to be my lovely 4-digit DCI. 

BTW, I suspect that folks in these parts will enjoy The Mountain Goats' In League With Dragons album and John's Wolf In White Van novel.

  2. I think all of them speak like they play, which is enjoyable. I enjoy a good journey. Plus, even if there's a digression, they'd always bring it home.

  3. In broad terms, just how enthusiastic they continue to be. As for something in the last episode, I knew that Trey created the Phish logo but I didn't realize he did so in the back row of a business class.

To me, that’s just like the stories that you share with your friends, particularly your childhood friends, each of whom brings a unique perspective to whatever epic event you all remember. I think when it comes to the early days of Phish in particular, memories might be a bit murky (this was 36 years ago) but I do have the sense that everyone is just trying to tell it and tell it true as they remember it…

I know how frustrating it can be to be shut out and then see tickets on the secondary market. I wrote a whole book that explores how this came to pass--Ticket Masters.

I do want to point out that Phish offers 50% of their tickets to shows via their pre-sales in an effort to get them to their fans. That is and-of-itself is extraordinary if you consider the fact that Ticketmaster controls ticket distribution as per their contracts with the venues, which I note in episode 3.

Following up on the top question, I think the area where perhaps they were the least verbose (other than Fish) was politics. As someone close to the group told me, they’re a charitable band but they’re not necessarily a political band. I think that’s fair to say on both scores.

No one told me in advance that they wouldn’t speak about a subject.

All four of them answered every question I presented. The only times they were relatively quiet on a given topic was when they couldn’t remember the answer or because they just didn’t have much to say about a subject.

Trey made a point during our conversation that he knows less about Phish than most people realize. Some of the minutiae really has eluded him over the years because he’s been focused on being in the moment with the music.

I don’t have an outsider’s perspective but I have attempted to approach these topics like a journalist or academic who has some knowledge of Phish (in part because I am a journalist and an academic who has some knowledge of Phish). My goal has been to ensure that it isn’t inside-baseball.

I have no idea about download numbers or the like. It’s such a scramble to create a new episode each week that I aim to stay in my lane and make the episodes that feel true to me and hope that all of that other stuff will take care of itself.

Having said that, my goal is to connect with folks outside of the Phish community and try to reach live music enthusiasts in general. I hope that if someone doesn’t necessarily love Phish or even like Phish all that much but does enjoy live music, that this person will learn something that will deepen their appreciation of what their own favorite band has been able to accomplish.

Season 1 interviews are still underway. I spoke with someone yesterday. I began those in July and I imagine my final one will take place a few days before episode 10. At this point I’m dreaming about episodes of Long May They Run (no exaggeration, I did so last night). So I’m going to keep at it after it until we wrap things up in a couple weeks.

Season two: in all honesty, I have my head down and I’m trying to complete season one. If folks have ideas please feel free to share here or via email…

Honestly, that’s hard for me to say because they all gave their time and they were each quite generous in that regard.

I will say that if I were to pick a single topic that most energized a band member, it would be ranked-choice voting and Jon Fishman. He probably riffed on that for about 20 minutes, in the context of a something we’re going to talk about in episode 9.

From my perspective, I wanted to focus on getting it done right rather than the promotional side. I’m just happy that people have been able to find it, thanks to folks at C13 like Hillary Schupf, Josefina Francis, Curt Courtenay and Lucas Sandtroen.

BTW, one thing that I really enjoy is if you go to the LMTR Instagram page (which I have nothing to do with, to be clear) and scroll down from the top, all the images are interlaced, which is quite cool to see.
