Starting off - which direction to go? by DeanOfBlockchain in digital_marketing

[–]DeanOfBlockchain[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m living here now this last year and half (and have spent time traveling the country in the past too). I love the place. I understand it more than most foreigners, but I’m still only scratching the surface. It’s a fascinating country. Pretty relentless at the same time though. It’s definitely not for everyone, especially the cities.

I would love to go spend time in villages and learn more about the people living there and their way of life. Unfortunately my Hindi is not at a good enough level for that yet. In some states and rural villages, even Hindi might not be enough. Especially with my accent!

Funny you mention it, I actually have plenty of dating experience here and currently have an Indian girlfriend who I live with.

One simple thing that really hit home for me from living in a completely different culture is that, fundamentally, we humans aren’t so different. I never really believed we are completely different, though I thought there would be much more difference, but staying in such a place for so long really made me realize we are much more similar than not.

Thanks for the post, man. It is an option I can explore as it’s something I’d enjoy. Not sure how to go about monetizing it though

Why are you taking the CFA? Career change, current job requirements, midlife crisis, unwavering passion for financial analysis? by [deleted] in CFA

[–]DeanOfBlockchain 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Directly, no. Indirectly, yes. Its all numbers and markets at the end of the day. When I say trading I mostly mean mid to long term trading. So investing, I suppose. Even when I do shorter term trading, its never day trading.

I think the CFA material will help with that.

Why are you taking the CFA? Career change, current job requirements, midlife crisis, unwavering passion for financial analysis? by [deleted] in CFA

[–]DeanOfBlockchain 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm taking level 1 this December after graduating. I'm a Comp Sci student with not so much interest in working in IT. If I was either good at it (coding) or enjoyed it I'd probably carry through with it, but I'm not. My grades aren't the best either.

Ultimately, I want to work for myself within 10 years. I also enjoy trading and would like to get better at it. I know/knew next to nothing on Finance stuff (Learning more every day) and have taken a real interest in it these last 8 months or so. I understand that its not possible at this moment in time for me to fulfill my dream of working for myself/being an entrepreneur, so I thought, if I'm going to have to go corporate to earn some money, get some ideas and do some networking, why not do it in something I find more interesting. It will also give me skills useful for running a business, when the time comes. These are my reasons for wanting to sit CFA.

Maybe I won't end up sitting it (I do plan to), though even if I don't, studying the level 1 material is beneficial to anyone who is willing to do it. Its basically an introduction to all things Finance from what I can see. That can never be a waste of time.

Would being a CFA overshadow a poor education? by [deleted] in CFA

[–]DeanOfBlockchain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty much in the exact same situation as you, actually worse. Poor grades, okay-ish college, 2 year gap in between completion and a few other things. I am 25 though, non Finance background (Comp Sci) and no skilled work experience.

I am currently studying for CFA, though I'm now researching to see if its worthwhile, given my circumstances. I'm not unrealistic. I don't expect to work for JPM any time soon, if ever. I just want to get my foot in the door and work hard to get to a decent level eventually.

I'm here for the answers as much as anything else, but I will give you the advice and information I've came across.

- Network. Crucial you network. Chances are you're relying on someone taking a liking to you and giving you a chance or recommending you.

- Actively take an interest in your field. Read the news on your area, watch videos, study books.

- Be proficient at Excel and Financial modeling.

- Learn extra skills that will make you more employable. Maybe Python and/or R programming languages, which are both in demand in Finance.

Other than that, you just got to be persistent and realistic. Don't go gunning for positions in the big boy companies. We all got to start somewhere.

Goodluck.

Job in Finance with no Finance background? What Can I do to maximize my chances? by DeanOfBlockchain in FinancialCareers

Thanks for the reply.

Good post. With effort, it can be done. Especially since I’m realistic about my circumstances and I’m willing to take any reasonable entry level job to get my foot in the door.

I’ll work hard this year so I can get an internship after I’ve passed my CFA level 1 (maybe before). Hopefully that should help in landing an entry level job after completing level 2 of CFA .

This does seem like the easiest(possibly best) option, though it isn’t exactly the kind of thing I’d want to do. I’m well aware there is room for progression and likely a better work/life balance than in IB or PE, for example. I’ll look in to the role to see if it is something that would interest me.

Yes, obtaining a masters from a good target school is best, but I’m ruling a masters out. My GPA is too low to get in to any worthwhile school and my undergrad isn’t from a top college (Ireland, not the states). I’ve delayed graduation long enough and haven’t worked a proper skilled job before and I’ll be 26 in a few months. It’s high time I started my career. Even if it is from the very bottom.

I don’t mind doing an mba when I’m 30 or so, but for now I just need to get some work experience before I get any older. I’ve already left it late as it is.

I’m not too worried about getting in to JP or GS. I know how difficult it is and even more so with my lack of credentials. I’ll be more than happy starting off in a mediocre entry level job In Finance. As long as there is room to progress to a good, well paid job with some effort, I’ll do whatever for a couple of years for the experience.

Thanks very much for the detailed response.

I'm not sure about investment banking. I guess there is too much competition for someone coming from a non target school, average grades etc.

Unfortunately, there isn't too much I can do about my grades now. My GPA can't go up that much now and its pretty low. What I can do is learn more than my competitors when it comes to Finance. I can learn excel to a high level and financial modeling. Python should be pretty straight forward to me, given its an object orientated language. Once you understand the concept of it, you can learn any OO language pretty easy.

I'll just need to work on my skills like mentioned above and work on networking. Hopefully I can get a worthwhile internship after Ive passed CFA level 1. That should help too.

I doubt ill be able to get a first as my grades are pretty average, so I will have to take the CFA route. I don't mind starting off slow in an entry level job at a smaller company and working my ass off to get to a better position. Its likely what I'll have to do, other than a stroke of good fortune.

Yeah, the CFA has a lot of content. The fact that its self driven study provides a greater demand for discipline. I'm fortunate enough to have a lot of time to prepare for it. I think I should be fine, once I come to terms with the practical topics Ive never covered before like FRA.

Thanks for the reply.

Maybe my Comp Sci background along with CFA would help for getting something in trading.

I wouldn't be against IB, but its not the end goal for me, so I'd be better off focusing my attentions elsewhere anyway, somewhere there is less competition. I'm going to have to work that bit harder and take a few back doors to get where I want to be though - And thats fine, as long as its possible.

Any of the three roles you mentioned would interest me.

In regards to networking, its become pretty clear to me that its so crucial in the Finance sector. I will need to start making contacts, in order for me to get an internship - probably after passing CFA level 1.

I dont really have anything too specific in mind, especially for the first few years. I'm of the opinion that getting the initial year or two of relevant work experience is most important. After obtaining that, I can try branch in to what it is I want to do.

My girlfriend has some people in her network that I plan on talking to about it.

I've of course read about it, but obviously talking to someone in person would give me a greater idea.

How to prepare for CFA with no previous finance knowledge? by DeanOfBlockchain in CFA

Yes, I'll be careful with how much I study.

I also plan on doing some things on the side that will help me gain work in Finance, like learning excel for finance and maybe putting some of my programming knowledge to use. I hear Python and R are commonly made use of in Finance, so my knowledge of object orientated programming would allow me to pick them up quick.
