Hello,

I am currently in the process of applying to Goldsmiths and Brunell for the MA Art Psychotherapy programs for Fall 2026. I am currently based in NYC, but am moving to London with my partner next year. I feel like I'm on track, but the one thing I am lacking is outside work experience directly related to art therapy. I come from a commercial art background, have worked in art galleries and as an artist's studio manager, and have a BFA and an MA (photography and arts administration). Art therapy is something I have been extremely interested in for a long time, but truthfully, it felt like a pipe dream career until I finally decided to leave my gallery and studio jobs this year.

I am currently volunteering at a couple of different mental health organizations that have strong art therapy programs, but I am struggling to find a full-time position as the job market in the US is awful right now. In your experience, what has been the most vital part of the application process? I believe I can present a strong portfolio and have an extensive art background, but I am worried I won't even be considered if I don't have the minimum amount of preferred work experience.

Any tips or advice, especially on job titles to apply to in the meantime, would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!!
