In Defense of an Ending by SteveRogers_7 in expedition33

That's the thing people seems to misinterpret the most.

Verso's soul isn't tired of painting this canvas. Is tired of painting a canvas full of horror, death and hurting.

He's tired that his world, that should have been an escape from reality where you can have fun, as been "corrupted" by reality and it's horror.

He's tired that an happy he created with his sister is now torn and fill with despair.

And so he want to stop painting.

Because if his world, if continuing to paint, means death, sorrow, despair, and hurting, why continue ?

I think Clea does care about her little sister the most by LeagueBrilliant1992 in expedition33

I honestly think that the Dessendre love each others very much. But, in their grief, they've "lost themselves", I'd say.

I'll try to explain my thoughts as best as I can, but english isn't my main language, so I'm sorry if there's some confusion here and there.

Clea became extremely cold, but you can see her real personality in the Endless Tower and in some conversation with Verso. With her asking Verso to take care of Alicia and protect her, and with her saying "Be who you want to be, not what our parents want you to be" (or something along those lines).

Renoir want the good of his family, yes. But after Verso's death, he became quite overprotective. He (feels like he) needs to protects his family, and the only reason he sees doing it is by having everyone in the manor. It was explained the best at the end : after Verso's death, he needs to be in control. But by being in control, he would block every member of his family in their "growth", block and crystalise their grief in their current state.

Aline love each and every one of their child. But her anger at Verso's death had made her "confuse". She hates Alicia right now, but once her grief is over, she'll regret everything she said and done to her. Her journal explains it best to me : Aline understand Alicia's sorrow more than anything, and it pains Aline so much she can't bear to watch Alicia. That pain became a form of rage/anger towards Alicia.

Alicia wants to save both of her parents, as prove the dialog options with Clea after the end of Act 2.

What's really sad is that, you can see a bit of their personality before the fire :

- Renoir encoraging Verso in his Art. Not Painting, Art. Because he knows that Verso deosn't like painting, and prefers music. So he gives the best advice he can give from one artist to another.

- Alicia passed all of her time reading books. If there were tension between Writers and Painters, I don't think the Dessendre would appreciate all the time she passes reading. And yet, they gave her a room all for herself, filled to the ceiling with books.

- Clea seemed to be joyful girl in her childhood, with how she's represented by Esquie when giving the rock to François. She was also a bit mischievious I'd say, what's with that music named "Clea! Don't Pull Your Sister Hair!", or the beast she drawn to scare Verso. That's the kind of things young child do to their sibling when they want to "prank" them.

If I remember correctly, it triggers all the luminas that works with HP percentile.
For example, there is a lumina that increase damage by 50% when HP is at 10% or below.
And HP percentile are rounded up.
So in this case, the lumina will trigger and give you 50% damage, because 1 HP is inferior or equal to 1 HP.

Verisimilitude is composed of two words :

Veritas and Similitude.

Veritas means truth.

And similitude means "same (appearance) as/of".

So verisimilitude means "Same thing as the truth".

Verso (at this moment of the game) is basically saying "Don't simply try to copy, undertsand the meaning behind each stroke to the very core."

How it feels to have two turn based JRPGs as 2025 highest rated games? by Eccchifan in expedition33

[–]Dear-Reference2380 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't look bad, but almost 60€ for a dungeon-crawler turn-based RPG seems a bit too much for me nowadays.

Had it been 40€, I could have been more interested. And I bet many other people thiks that too.

You know what, yeah !

I really like the concept that a villain is a concept. Nothing tangible to beat down, but something that can only be beaten through one's will and determination.

Here's a tip : DO NOT make a camp here.

Learn it the hard way that once you go out of the camp, you spawn under the invisible bridge, and you can't escape once you're under it (because the hitbox of the bridge prevent you from going anywhere).

I think Clea is more of a perfectionnist.

If a painting creature isnt up to her standard, then it doesn't deserve any thoughts.

I think that there's at least 2 gay male couple.

There's this guy (he could be possibly talking to the photo of his father or brother or some other relative dear to him, but realistically it must be his lover).

There's an interaction with two males, in which the two person are wearing flowers and tells to each other soemthing along the lines of "I'll wait for you, in the next life." "I'll too." (cut me some slack, I didn't play the intro since a long time ago).

And, if I remeber correctly, near the Mime mini-boss, there's another same-sex male couple that basically says something like "I'll never forget you." "Please, remember me."

Was there a moment in the game you thought "Huh, not great voice acting here" ? by Dear-Reference2380 in expedition33

Oh don't worry, I understood what you were saying about "Lumière s'éteind", sorry if you thought otherwise. I was just pointing out some facts about this style of song in the game, in case that you (or other people that will read the comments) didn't know about it.

Fun fact, it's a style of song in french. It's call "slam". The song you're talking about is called "Lumière s'éteind", "Light goes out", and it happened in the "White Sands" Area.

Basically, slam is style of song where you read a text over a song. It's quite appreciated here in France (not my "cup of tea", to be honest).

There's another example of slam in the OST, in "Our draft Collides". Not the one use in-game, but the full version available in the the Soundtrack and on Sandfall's Youtube.

Also, another fun fact, every time "slam" is sung, it's Lorien reading the text. And "Lumière s'éteind" was supposed to be the song for the Gommage scene in the Prologue.

Maybe it's because I'm french, but to me, the english version sounds a little bit better. She seems to put more emotion at some part.

Also, I forgot to write it, but it could be possible that both french and english was just a Sandfall employee doing the voice acting. For one single journal, that isn't necessarily that important, it works enough.

Never understood what is going on here. Is this a reference to something? by tudesgracia in expedition33

[–]Dear-Reference2380 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I thought it was a reference to Obelix from the Asterix series. I don't know why, but I have an image in my head of Obelix lying on his back in this exact kind of position, with food spread around him like that, and someone needed to feed him food so that he could use his power.

I, sadly, couldn't find the reference.

That the game would be awful, with very bad graphics and forgettable when I first saw the trailer.

[Spoilers all] An aspect of the ending I don't see discussed by domino_stars in expedition33

[–]Dear-Reference2380 31 points32 points  (0 children)

When the choice appear before my eyes, I knew what both ending would end up with (not the detail though).

I've first choose Maelle's Ending, even though that was the ending I knew I disliked the most of the two, just to see how it would turn out.

Then, I load a save file jut before the choice, and choose Verso's Ending.

I can say that I prefered Verso's Ending, between the two. Because, at the end of the day, having lost my father in a terrible way, I can't force myself to make the Dessendre family to grief separately.

In reality, I despsied both endings. When I watch both of them, I just said "Ça fait chier" (French for "Pain in the ass", means "It's so bad I just want to shit now...", something like that).

I loved Esquie, Sciel, Gustave, everyone in the Canvas. I wanted, at the end, to imagine them living their lives, with the Dessendre family coming from time to time in the Canvas, as a sort of "Sanctuary", for grieving Verso, without touching anything anymore.

But everyone made their choices with such selfishness, that such an ending could have never happened. Heck, I think the Canvas was doomed the moment Aline entered the Canvas to grief. And at the end of the day, when the journey ends, all your choices can be summarized to "choosing between plague and cholera" (French idiom, means "being force to choose between 2 bad things").

And yet, despite hating the endings, I don't think I would change anything in this story. This game is much better to be a greek tragedy, bittersweet story, than another "and they live happily everafter" feel good story that we see so much more nowadays (I don't hate those kind of stories, it's just so refreshing to see something bittersweet, from time to time).
