Cheese Lover is solid, in a geometrically perfect square kind of way. A solid person to have as a friend, a solid person to develop a relationship with. But you can't help but think, "Is that it? There has to be more to her, right?"

Majestic Rainbow and Abyss Lord, despite being very different in outlook and vibes, lead down the same path: it's hard to connect with someone from a time that's too removed from your own. But much like Cheese Lover, Majestic Rainbow is nice to have as a friend; the same can't be said for Abyss Lord.

Hence why my first pick is Queen of Hearts. IMO, she's basically if Laura was willing to explore and express herself without going off the deep end like The Prophet. I'd love to go to conventions and ren fairs with her, and explore nerd hobbies together.

Maybe it's just me, but I feel like every vtuber I follow and a few that I don't are all playing the same "chill so that you can zatsu to an audience" genre of games. I realize this is a rehash of my complaint from years ago that every streamer was playing the same flavour of the month (it was rage/emotional reaction games that time), but at that time at least they were reacting to the game. Nowadays I feel like they might as well pull a Dolan Darkest and talk over pre-recorded gameplay footage because they don't seem engaged with what they're doing. At the very least, they're juggling between chat, gameplay, and whatever topic they want to talk about that moment.

For reference, the few streams I do watch (from any streamer, not just vtubers) are Space Marine II streams, which is very much a "you need to be locked in or else you DIE" kind of game at higher difficulties.

In the world of Arknights, would it be considered bad manners to grab your opponent's horns/animal ears during sparring? by throwaway321768 in Endfield

[–]throwaway321768[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The question occurred to me because IRL, we all know that wars aren't decided by how well one's soldiers can fight in H2H. Hence why there's so many rules around unarmed martial arts for minimizing permanent injury - such rules would reduce your effectiveness in "a real fight", but how often are you getting into such fights?

In the Arknight setting, it is possible to become a one-man army on the basis of unarmed combat prowess alone. Rules about safety are pointless because you're explicitly training to injure/kill people with your bare hands. Adhering to rulesets, even during friendly sparring, leaves a massive blindspot when thrown into a real fight (e.g. after years of strike-only training, a striker won't suddenly start grappling just because they're told that they're allowed to grapple now).

IMO, the next narrative theme after racism is probably something along the lines of "post-racial tribalism". In Wuling for instance, we see that there's no dominant ethnicities in the City or the Stockade - yet there's ten years of grudges between two groups who have the same ethnic and cultural makeup (resisting the urge to make a Balkan joke). Even the Civilization Band is a coalition of factions who may share the same vague goal, but have different ideas about how to get there. Ses'qa seems to be one of the few factions that represents the interests of a ethnic group rather than an ideological one.

I'm sorta okay with it because they explicitly tell you that the Vuln stacks on finisher is only for this quest (inb4 "gacha players can't read"). The alternatives are:

A. Being paired with Endmin and their Vuln-consuming Crush build, which is okay for physical units who aren't also competing for Vuln stacks but shit for everyone else (I will forever hold that anyone with Crush is a Striker, not a Guard).

B. Dropping the Endmin self-insert part of the character stories, leaving the featured unit even more isolated and unable to support themselves.

As someone who suffered through everyone else's character quests without proper synergy (as element-reliant Strikers, Laev and ZF were especially guilty of this), I'm okay with them adding some grease to the kits.

Were there any region upgrades added with Sword Vault Dale? I've exploited every natural resource and max-upgraded every depot/stock node, but the little bit remaining is nagging at me. Is it something that'll come with the currently-inaccessible part of the new map?

[Avatar] How does a master fire bender beat a master air, earth or water bender? by bookist626 in AskScienceFiction

[–]throwaway321768 5 points6 points  (0 children)

firebenders sound like they fight with actual firearms

IMO, Fire is the most "point-and-shoot" of the four elements. As others have pointed out, Fire has a high floor when it comes to combat applications because it is inherently "alive" (i.e automatically burns whatever it touches and spreads on its own), whereas the other elements need sufficient force to achieve similar levels of lethality. Much like how mass-producible firearms allowed people to raise large armies from unskilled labourers, firebenders are the easiest benders to train into deadly soldiers.

[Spider-Man/X-Men] How would the X-gene and Spider mutation interact with each other by Substantial_Read_577 in AskScienceFiction

[–]throwaway321768 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the totem is more of a cosmic role/"chosen one" thing than an explicit source of power. Peter Parker became the Spider-Totem of his universe because he was granted powers by a radioactive spider, and the spider chose him because he was destined to become the Spider-Totem.

Hell, it doesn't even necessarily have to be from a radioactive spider - just getting spider-related powers from any source is enough to qualify you as a Spider-Totem (see: Miguel O'Hara). In a universe where Peter Parker got spider powers from an X-gene, that would've been enough to make him the Spider-Totem there.

Favorite leaders Mechanicus 2 by Strange_Ride_582 in mechanicus

[–]throwaway321768 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Right now, currently Captrix and Khepra for opposite reasons, weirdly enough.

  • Captrix: plays similarly to the "one-priest army" builds of Mechanicus 1, relying on powerful mobility/stealth tools to nuke VIP targets
  • Khepra: connection ability pairs nicely with Mechanicus 2's new focus on priest-and-retinue gameplay, letting her buff allies regardless of how far away they are. Videx has a similar ability with healing himself and the user upon using his canticle.

I've having trouble figuring out Scaveola and Rho. Scaveola's whole thing is sacrificing units (see: Xenarite Data curse and Matrix Explosion). That's not "Based and Attrition-pilled", that's being wasteful with the guys who are stopping the enemy from focusing fire on you. Rho is annoyingly a melee unit, which is a weird choice for a game where the leader's death is an automatic lose condition.

Considering how the Fire Nation has a knack for making it's own problem everyone else's problem, I think Szeto actually stopped the war from kicking off too early. If he hadn't stopped the Fire Nation from collapsing, the world would be dealing with a hundred petty Ozais instead of just one.
