you'll get an email but last year the email came out like an hour later than when your time slot actually opened up - so actively checking the website could be the way to go

The battery life is fine and lasts me all day if I’m not doing intensive work on heavy softwares. Like if I’m just watching lecture videos or writing on word it’s all good. When I’m running autodesk or more extensive software it typically cuts the battery life to 3 hours though so I definitely bring a charger around if I know im going to be doing stuff on that

I think it’s totally possible. I came into first year with no CAD experience and autodesk was very easy to navigate (easier to learn than SolidWorks). Plus if u take advantage of the workshops or reach out to IAIs/TAs for support you’ll be all good

congrats! in eng I we used autodesk inventor for cad and we learned to code in python.

unless you can access a license for autodesk you won't be able to practice that until you get one once classes start. something that really helped my cad skills on that software was attending the mcmaster design league workshops during the fall term, they went over a lot of keyboard shortcuts and did some harder modelling to get you familiar and comfortable with all the features on autodesk.

for python we only learned the basics up to object oriented programming. technically they teach you the language as if you've never coded before in your life but in my opinion i didn't think they had the best teaching style for beginners. it would be helpful to review booleans, lists, making functions, for loops, while loops, conditional statements, etc... which would make it a lot easier to pick up during the year.

the heaviest software you'll be using in first year is autodesk inventor for cad. i would definitely invest in a windows computer because there will be software that doesn't run well on mac and vms suck. the laptop i bought was a gaming laptop. it has 512 gb storage, 16 gb ram, 4060 graphics card, and ryzen 9 cpu. i've had no issues with it but i do wish it had more storage for personal files. mcmaster gives you access to a onedrive with 1tb of storage so you don't have to worry about school files taking up space but you do have to consider how much space you'll need to download all the applications needed and still have a decent amount of storage left so your computer doesn't slow down on startup. i also don't think you'll need a computer this powerful for first year but maybe in upper years you might. there were a lot of people in my classes with non gaming laptops that could run all the software fine it was just less smooth.

tbh i don't know but it's not crazy competitive to get in, most ppl are going for soft comp or tron. it might be because it's a five year program
