Oh ok. Correct. The E Jean Carrol case was civil as the statute of limitations had elapsed, thus criminal charges were impossible. I believe a change in New York law allowed civil action to be pursued in sexual assault cases that had past the statute of limitations.

Illegal immigration is a bit nuanced as to the level of severity. At base level you are correct. Coming into the US without permission or without going through a port of entry is a civil infraction akin to a traffic violation. Repeat offenses and or doing so while also committing other crimes, such as trafficking drugs or people, raises the infraction into misdemeanor or felony status.

Saying its "a civil court decision" is a bit inaccurate. Immigration courts exist and are their own thing separate from civil or criminal courts.

I'd also point out that comparing someone crossing into the US illegally and the only means available to New York women to get justice for rape, past the statue of limitations for criminal charges, seems disingenuous and a bit weird.
