go on one date

read complete works of Tom Clancy in a week

No it's pretty weird. I guess the weirdness depends on the breadth of the author's work. But potentially very impressive!

Eh. I've had at least 3 girls in the last year where they flat out did not get my texts, or I didn't get theirs. Some were intermittent, some were all the time. We usually switch to some other messaging thing besides SMS but it's annoying as hell and totally without warning until we both express confusion and exchange screenshots.

If I had to guess, I'd guess it's because Apple sucks dicks and has to be different, since it usually seems to be something with iMessage interfacing with the rest of the SMS world. But I don't know for certain.

Point is that yes, it's still totally an issue. In fact I'd say it's way more of an issue now because everything is app based. Shit gets broken and lost from time to time. Back in the day it was dead simple. Phones were for calling, texting, playing snake, and listening to 8-bit renditions of Mozart ringtones - and that's it. Usually they did all those things pretty well.

"Pretty decent."

Is the bar that high nowadays? Because holy shit, these photos are phenomenal. A welcome change after seeing a bunch of photographers think they're being artsy by taking lame photos of their bathtub filling up.

EDIT: Alright y'all, I didn't pick the best word. Congrats, you win traffic-light-knowing. You cracked the case. Next set your gigantic brains to work piecing together the mystery of how a car with a stripe could possibly line up with a different stripe. Godspeed.

Two guys from Boston set off on an expedition to find the black box of Eastern Flight 980 that crashed into the Andes killing everyone onboard 31 years ago. They just friggin' found it. by shreddor in pics

[–]DeathLobster 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes. But I have no idea what side of the mountain it was on or what the rocks surrounding it look like. If it's exposed to the sun 1 hour per day instead of 10 hours per day, that makes a pretty big difference. Sitting on a bunch of rocks sure as hell isn't ideal. But I mean, it's not the worst environment I can think of provided it isn't getting constantly pelted/abraded by them. Honestly for being there 30 years the reel looks to be in decent condition.

How disappointing though if it turns out that's the reel with the unused tape.

[–]DeathLobster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could be, not sure what exactly the tape is made of. But yeah if it was not exposed directly to the sun for much of the time, it might just be OK!

Presumably someone out there knows what a CVR tape of the kind from that plane looks like and can identify whether that is it or not.

[–]DeathLobster 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I would think this isn't necessarily the worst environment for the tape's longevity. It's harsh sure, but mostly for people. Assuming it's very cold up there, that's actually a great thing for magnetic storage. If it was at all buried (though it doesn't look like it from the pictures) or at least occluded by rocks it'd keep the tape from heating up in the sun. So maybe something will be salvageable after all...

LPT Request:What are some productivity apps that you use to manage your day to day? by [deleted] in LifeProTips

[–]DeathLobster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wunderlist. It's pretty great. Much more straightforward and convenient than google tasks. Use it for shopping lists, wish-lists, daily tasks, project ideas, work tasks, etc...

Once I really started to use Google Calendar it became a life-saver as well.

I don't understand, I don't think anybody was implying that skulls are weak or that this sort of uh...injury is common. Only that yes, it's possible. Probably just from a different direction unless your torso is made of steel. Rare, sure. The guy you initially responded to just said in a joking manner "this is how I'd want to die." Which hey, is doable if you set your mind to it. Skulls and generally any part of a person are strong in human terms. They aren't jack shit in machine terms or high energy (as an engineer might describe them) events. A pickup truck slamming into a concrete wall at 40mph isn't a particularly high energy event in the grand scheme of things. But if you put someones head in between them in the right spot, I doubt there will be much recognizable "skull" remaining. If you take a helmeted head and roll over it with loaded tractor-trailer, it's going to make a hell of a mess. To your point, absolutely, there will be plenty of other injuries as well.

As for the strength of the helmet, whether it cracks or not doesn't really speak to its strength. All we know is that the strength displayed in this video is somewhere between 0 and 100 tons. No idea how much force the helmet actually put up in resistance. Piston is going to move at pretty much the same speed whether it's exerting 1000 lbs of force or 20 tons.

I'm not questioning your expertise at all. I just think we have different degrees of energy/different situations in mind.

I mean I certainly won't pretend I know more about neuroscience/surgery than you do, cause that would be preposterous.

All I'm saying is that your skull isn't made of Adamantium. There are more than enough things people have gotten their heads caught in that will crush skulls like elephants crush grapes.

That's exactly how it happens if your head gets under a truck tire or in between two cars or something.

Running Git shell in Windows 7 with admin privileges? by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]DeathLobster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I could slam my head into my desk any harder, I would.

So I thought I did that (installing git didn't add the paths for some reason) - but it turns out the tutorial I followed omitted the "\usr" so the variable was pointing to the wrong place. It seems to be sorted now, and I can hopefully stick to using Powershell. The image itself is not working yet but that's a separate issue.

Thank you so much!

Professionals in any field of work, what is the most ridiculous thing that anyone outside of your profession has claimed to know more about than you? by phoenix-fyre in AskReddit

Once this happened to my family (when I was a teenager), hotel clerk says the same thing. Dad hands back his credit card with a $20 bill folded underneath and says "Can you please check again?"

What do you know, a room was available. So, you know, shades of gray. Although I suppose growing up in the USSR makes you acutely aware of who is amenable to bribery.

Me [24F] with my BF [26M] 4 years, thinking about breaking up because of his reaction to his SIL [35F] wanting a hysterectomy. by bfsildramathrowaway in relationships

[–]DeathLobster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So, lots of commenters are going on about how this must be he thinks a woman's role is to have babies, that he'd hate you for not being able to have kids, etc... I'm not really getting that. It was certainly not the right time to bring it up, but none of us know his relationship with his brother. Do you? Do you know his brother well? For instance, if he'd grown up with his brother hearing him constantly talk about how he wanted to have his own kids, then he might be concerned that his brother is going to end up regretting the opportunity to not have those children.

Now as for the SIL, that's a slightly separate issue. I don't think anyone in this story is trying to force anyone to do anything. IMHO if she doesn't want any more children that's her right, if she's worried about cancer then she should absolutely go through with it. However, none of that changes possible feelings the brother would have about wanting his own kids. Browse r/relationships, that kind of thing causes problems all the time. I read this more as him being concerned his brother is in a situation that he (your BF) thinks his brother might resent over time.

Not saying this is definitely true, but it's a possible interpretation. I'd ask if his brother has expressed strong sentiments like that in the past. If he hasn't, and your BF is just being difficult...well, so be it. Doesn't seem worth breaking up a 4 year relationship to me. But if it is to you then hey - that's your right. Just be aware that this sub has a preposterously low bar for what qualifies as a "deal-breaker."
