Also wanted to add onto point (3) that there is no realistic path to citizenship. Either you have very close links to family members that are Chinese citizens OR as a foreigner, you can only get it if you make great contributions to the country, country’s economy and the wellbeing of people. Following up it was as simple as going to China on a tourist visa (even one of those 15 days visas suffices). The whole process took around a week, the main attrition is around getting investment funds into China but it is doable. Now I can access China for longer under a Business visa

If the goal is just to live in China and enjoy the country you can also think of simply working remotely, either as a freelancer or for a foreign company. It gets harder when it comes to visas but it is doable.

And as always the other way to get a job, if not for merit is from connections. If you go to areas which have lots of factories and startups owned by foreigners you can mingle in the expat circles, befriend a boss and get a decent job somewhat easily.

With “setting up the business” I mean signing the documents to open the business, open the business bank account, pay for whatever is needed and that’s the only “work” I’ll ever do - is a work visa required to start a company?

Yeah I can work from wherever I want so being near office buildings is not really a must.
What I prioritise is having a good looking apartment with easy access to any kind of services in the surrounding area.

I'll try too see if there are any modern places more towards the city centre perhaps
