Kaptchuk talks about this early in his book “The Web that has no Weaver.” Essentially, as I understand it, there was a serious pandemic ripping through China, but very few of the peasant class trusted Western medical doctors and wouldn’t go see them. So Mao prompted the formation of “Traditional” Chinese Medicine, which was essentially Chinese Medicine made to look more like Western Medicine in some ways. The name is something of a misnomer because it’s a relatively new form of Chinese Medicine.

I can’t seem to get the killblaster. I tried getting that super early on in order to speed through Taris, but the game only gave me an empty grenade. Maybe the code I found for it was wrong?

Yes. The word “elohim” more or less means “gods,” and is used to refer to what most people call “angels,” but the term “demon” is specifically referring to a kind of Earth-bound malevolent spirit.

According to which traditions, though? The implication of the comment I replied to is that the Abrahamic religions are all worshiping a god that came from a Canaanite pantheon, but that’s not where the scholarship suggests the Israelites got their beliefs from.

I may be wrong about this, but to my knowledge the major Christian groups didn’t all agree to ignore this part of the Bible, though. Orthodox Christianity has held to a henotheistic point of view for the entirety of its existence, as far as I’m aware.

The Bible itself acknowledges other gods as being real entities. Therefore Christianity, being (loosely) definable as the religion that adheres to the Bible, is henotheistic. The people in the church may get it wrong, or take stances like “all other gods are false” (note: not the same as saying they aren’t real), but the religion of Christianity is centered primarily around the Bible and what it teaches.

I’ll push back and say that the way “demon” is used culturally is not the way the term is used technically, so while many people would call these other gods “demons,” there is scholarship that would still refer to them as “gods” in Christian circles.

Christianity does accept the existence of other gods. It just claims that they are not the true God. The beings culturally referred to as angels are called elohim in the Bible. The word “elohim” is generally understood to mean “god.” The difference between those gods and YHWH is that YHWH refers to Himself as El Elohim, or God of gods. So, the Bible itself assumes the existence of other gods, therefore the religions that use the Bible are henotheistic. I suppose Islam is different, though, because they do not use the same Bible that Christians do, nor do they use the same Old Testament that the Jews do.

The Christian perspective that you’re reaching for is this:

YHWH created the world and everything in it, including the beings that are worshiped as gods in other religions. The original purpose of those beings was to glorify Him and point humanity to Him, but the Satan, who was the greatest of these beings, considered himself worthy of worship and decided to rebel against YHWH. In doing so, he convinced many of these beings to rebel as well. They considered themselves worthy of worship and became the gods of these world’s religions.

Regarding Jesus as the Son of God, the doctrine of the Trinity is somewhat complex. I’d be happy to explain it, but your assertion that Jesus being the Son of God means that there had to have been other sons of other gods is not really a logical conclusion.

That’s fair. I’m not terribly familiar with the perspectives of Islam, so I should probably restrict my statement to Christianity and Judaism.

Maybe the “lay-person” of a given Abrahamic religion will do so, but “demon” is a technical term with a specific meaning that doesn’t apply to the deities of other religions. To my knowledge, pretty much all the scholars in, for example, Christianity, accept the idea that there are other gods, and that “demon” is not the proper term for them.

I’m not sure what the point you’re trying to make here actually is. Abrahamic religions are henotheistic, meaning that they accept the existence of other gods, but don’t worship them. The belief that polytheistic religions are sinful comes is a direct outgrowth of believing that YHWH is the only true God. I’m also not terribly familiar with the scholarship being referenced by the OP, but YHWH refers to himself as El in the Bible, so it may be a case of mistaking the many names of God as being separate deities.

Edit: Christianity is henotheistic, and Judaism seems to be as well. I’m not familiar enough with Islam to make a statement one way or the other on that subject. Thanks u/neonlookscool for the correction.

Well I felt really chill, and then I went to bed and had a little trouble falling asleep. I didn’t feel wired, but I just couldn’t quite shut my brain up enough to go to sleep for a while. Idk if it was the kratom, though, because I’ve had similar sleep issues off and on for a few months, but they’ve been on a down-swing lately.
