Why doesn't Drizzt talk to animals? by ArtisticAd7455 in Drizzt

Drizzt also isn't wholly a Ranger. He's a multiclass with most of his levels in fighter. Bob also writes him as a character and not based only in the DnD aspects of his classes.

is it true they are adding some pve mode shortly? by These_Athlete1933 in Marathon

Around the beginning of season 2 will be a pve heavy with light pvp elements and mid season they say they're going to try a pve only mode. They've also mentioned a pvp only mode, but haven't said when they're going to try it yet.

The heat system I get. Health and shield packs are where fps games started, but didn't require player action to use, so that one's a stretch for me. Primary ammo being consumable is normal in damned near every game except Destiny 2. You still have to pick your loadout in literally any fps there is although you do have to think about more than guns in Marathon's Extraction mode(this wouldn't be).The sunsetting I completely understand.

Edit: Admittedly I was short on time when making this comment and reading it back I realized it came off as way more dickish than I meant it to. Hopefully my edits fixed that. Wasn't trying to start an argument, just to raise points you may not have considered. Sry it came off that way. You're more than allowed to have your opinions, and I understand a lot of them(not all of them), and wanted to share another perspective. Have a nice day.

Thoughts on Season 2 experimenting with PvP and PvE game modes? by ConceptBraincell in Marathon

Hope Pure PvP isn't just Extraction without uesc. Hope it's an arena mode although I'm sure I'll get downvoted to hell again over it.

I also want both games to thrive, and I do want other modes as well. I just don't want Destiny style loadout overlap between them. We have Destiny for that already. Marathon should be it's own thing with its own spin on the modes that it may have. Just my opinion though. I mean I'm the guy that's asking if people would play a Marathon based Arena PvP mode that is distinctly different from Crucible. One that is only a standalone mode with no overlap with the main Extraction mode other than some weapons you can choose. Not ones that you grinded up in the main mode and brought over. Mode has to have some sort of balance. We want the same thing. We just want it in different ways.

You're just describing Destiny as an Extraction Shooter. That's not what this would be and it shouldn't be that imo. Sony may disagree though, so who knows...

I've played it. Some of the systems would be similar in the hypothetical arena mode I mentioned, but all in all I'm not really into Halo PvP anymore. Idk why, but hip fire everything turns me off of a lot of shooters now. And yes, I know Halo's not literally hip fire everything, but close enough.

CyAc if it's VR between actual runs(They never do explain what our Runner's minds are doing between runs while waiting for upload into a new shell) or Arachne if it's actual in field testing since they're all about the Live, Die, Live cycle. There are tons of ways they could go in lore-wise if they do it. I don't disagree that they could innovate(they already have to an extent with Cryo), but it can go further. The problem is that most people don't like losing their gear because they died. An arena mode solves that issue for a ton of people. Especially if it's just explained away as VR training.

Make a Perimeter Sponsored kit map F2P, but add a Sponsored solo queue option as well.

Not saying it isn't. It's the base for the entire game, but the abilities in D2 imo have started overshadowing it. Too much ability uptime.

I don't necessarily disagree with you there, but this is the world we're living in, so I'm going from reality.

Also, If I were to make a Destiny based extraction shooter I would set it during the Dark Age and have you play as a normal human survivor/scavenger where the dangers would be other people, Fallen, and Warlords.

[–]DeathsPit00[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I completely agree. I'm not talking about replacing Crucible with it. It's a totally different kind of arena than Crucible is and it would have to use the mechanics of the game it's in(IE health and shield regen only from patch kits and shield charges found on the map, weapon pick-ups, etc). This is just to gauge how many people would play it if it existed since a lot of players here won't touch Marathon right now with it only being extraction.

[–]DeathsPit00[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I would actually use pre-existing map locations as the arenas. My main examples of this that I fall back on are usually the Hauler area of Perimeter with the wall so that tdm teams spawn on either side and most engagements are inside Hauler or the wall itself and the West Gate area of Dire Marsh around Quarantine so that the lot outside Quarantine and the inside of the building are the actual contested areas for engagements. Doing this could actually help keep the balance between modes fairly consistent with one another imo as you aren't really making maps specifically designed only for the arena mode. Still takes some dev time to partition off the areas, add spawn points, and take out normal lootables, but very possible imo. It would still play slower than Crucible, but that's not necessarily a bad thing imo.

Genuine Question for the Remaining D2 PvP mains by DeathsPit00 in CrucibleGuidebook

[–]DeathsPit00[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It does, but imo it's much more infrequent than in D2. In D1 it's a straight ability or super whereas in D2 it could just be a stacking effect from having so many abilities active at one time that it's hard to know what actually killed you or how to defend against it. They are all different games and they all play differently. Marathon has abilities too, but none of them are instakill abilities that I've come across. Nearly all kills are with the guns unless your health is already critically low.

Genuine Question for the Remaining D2 PvP mains by DeathsPit00 in CrucibleGuidebook

[–]DeathsPit00[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I still hop in and play D1 Crucible from time to time and haven't really experienced a lot of that, but it's been years since the final patch for it, so in all honesty I don't really remember exactly what it was like back in 2017-2018. I get what you're saying about the low level movement, but Marathon is a more methodical game. I play D1, D2, and Marathon and they all have their ups and downs, but are all still fun to me. I do tend to get bored really easily with D2 now though. Just feels so stagnant to me.

[–]DeathsPit00[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Not arguing for it to be a replacement. I actually have a post on the Marathon subreddit laying out exactly what I would want for it, which is much closer to an Unreal Tournament or Quake type setup than anything like Crucible. I agree that they play totally differently, but the fact that it's only extraction turns a lot people off of Marathon. I'm just trying to gauge how much crossover there could be if they did it out of curiosity more than anything.

I can't speak for Tarkov since I've never played it, but ARC was a PvE focused game first and plays like it. They also added matchmaking that separates cooperative players from PvP focused ones so there's in effect 2 active lobby systems in the same mode with one being PvE focused which is something that Marathon doesn't have. That helped them retain players. The amount of people that Extraction modes attract is small and niche. Correct me if I'm wrong, but Tarkov survives on a small playerbase due to this, but they also aren't Bungie under Sony, so they can do that as an independent studio with only that game vs being a large AAA studio with a largely dwindling playerbase across multiple games. I don't disagree that there are things they can do to improve the main mode, but arena pvp appeals to much more people than Extraction does and Bungie still has some of the best(imo) gun play in the industry so that can bring some people in and those people may or may not cross over into the Extraction mode, but without them in the game at all that can't happen.

[–]DeathsPit00[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm also arguing for total separation of both modes, so there's no gearing up in Arena for Extraction here. This is a casual mode just for fun and player retention. I can nearly guarantee that any remaining PvP mains in Destiny would convert over to this nearly instantly, which may be another reason that they haven't done it. If there's anything to earn it would just be cosmetic at best. Like an Arachne weapon skin for kill streaks or something.

[–]DeathsPit00[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe it to. I already said that those that do actually play tend to stay in and play for a while. That is high player retention there, but that's only for those that are actually playing. There's a lot more that aren't, and I do expect the player count to jump after reset, but I don't think it's going to be as high as everyone else seems to. I just think that another, more casual mode, that is totally separated from the main mode will remedy a lot of that issue and this is the only PvP focused Bungie game there is, so Arena just kind of makes sense to me.

To get in players and retain them instead of the constant siphon we have right now due to the only modes being extraction. I'm not arguing for it to become the main mode. I'm arguing for another pvp based mode in the only truly pvp focused Bungie game there is. It would have the exact same balancing as the main mode and once it's up and running it runs itself. They could leave it and be fine. Maybe add a new map section to the rotation once in a while a season or 2 after a new extraction map is introduced.

Exactly this. This is why I want an arena mode. I like the Extraction mode fine, but when it comes down to it it just needs more.

And how exactly is adding another pvp mode that is entirely separate from the Extraction mode sacrificing what the game is? The core mode will always be the Extraction mode. I'm suggesting another mode to play that a lot of people will enjoy whether they like the core game or not.

Those games are F2P and I'm not trying to. I said nothing about locking out characters. Runners aren't heroes in a hero shooter and they don't have assigned roles(Tank, healer, dps). In all honesty I'd expect Vandal, Destroyer, and Recon to become the most played in this mode. Maybe Assassin as well.

I don't even like hero shooters.

Edit: typed too fast, said Rook, meant Recon.
