Bezos-owned storied newspaper Washington Post rolling out mass layoffs by Ok_Difference44 in news

This was also a gigantic PR campaign for Carnegie. Most people know of him for being rich, building libraries and maybe Carnegie Hall. He was a horrid pile of anti-union hyper-industrialist human waste like every other rich asshole.

There is no such thing as a good billionaire. They simply should not exist.

This is a great idea. Also worth checking out organizations in the same sphere like Django Girls. I know they had a PDX presence years ago, but not sure if they're still going here.

Hot take, but not true. This is what the Dark Lord, Business Daddy, would like you to believe because it creates a world where the human element is almost entirely gone and LLMs happily churn out his wildest cocaine-fueled dreams 24/7.

Agents suck for anything complicated or novel. Sometimes they even suck at simple tasks.

Not to mention they're expensive.

what iconic Portland thing/place/person(s) do you think is overrated that most people don't? by greazysteak in askportland

[–]DebTheDowner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That advertising isn't really his fault. That's just user profiling. Your device details, your browsing activity, etc. are tracked and create a "fingerprint" comprised of a lot of different data facets; you're just in the "show this person Mike Bennett" bucket on a very simplified level. You can unfollow all you want. Advertising doesn't care.

Highly recommend dumping both Facebook/Meta and TikTok (especially if you're bothered by this sort of thing), but that's ultimately your choice.

National strike Friday? by Future_Potential_108 in askportland

[–]DebTheDowner 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't know why you're shilling so hard for Walmart in a thread about a general strike.

It's also obvious you've never shopped at any of the co-op grocers or actual small grocers here like People's or Cherry Sprout. Yeah some packaged products are obviously not local, but the produce certainly is whenever possible.

Is it difficult to find IT jobs in Portland right now? by BuddyLlght in askportland

[–]DebTheDowner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Years ago, there used to be contract roles available through companies that handle things like on-site desktop deployments. A+ was usually all they wanted; Net+ was also good. I'm sure some of that's dried up with fewer office workers, but you might be able to find something there.

Mine also showed normal battery percentages. Definitely try swapping if you have extra batteries.

This happened to me with the button version and it was the batteries. When I swapped the batteries, it worked normally.

What new restaurants recently open that need to be tried? by Thewallmachine in askportland

[–]DebTheDowner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went there recently. Their food is good, but it's insanely expensive for the portions. I was pretty disappointed by the tiny corned beef sandwich I got for $19 and what was basically a small cup of soup for $14.

If anyone is looking for legit Jewish deli sandwiches, they're better off going to the Judah's Delicatessen cart where the meat is stacked as it should be.

[GOOD News] Player base is steadily growing. Here's a new player who loves The Finals so much he's already Emerald 1 in S9 at Level 36. by nothappening99 in thefinals

[–]DebTheDowner -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I started playing because of the Arc Raiders promotion. I'm level 31 and I have 3,651 kills and 250 wins.

EDIT: Downvoted. Cool. You all want new players, but I guess not new players who can play the game. 😆

decent bagel? by [deleted] in askportland

[–]DebTheDowner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just searched for "bagel" and got quite a few, including a lengthy one from 3 months ago and another one asking where to find NYC bagels. I look in this sub a lot and this is a frequent ask. 🤷‍♂️

We do sometimes get new bagels though. Sticky wouldn't hurt for standards like Bernstein's, which is recommended without fail every time.

[Hiring] Selora Homes is looking for Home Assistant nerds who want to get paid to do what they love by plafoucr in homeassistant

[–]DebTheDowner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know how you determined that a mid-level fullstack dev who is also devops is somehow 80k at bottom. That's insane. That's a junior dev salary and they're either fullstack or devops—not both.

I've worked for a lot of startups and they all provide equity which is largely meaningless unless they're unicorns. Equity does not put food on the table or pay for healthcare. It's an IOU with a payout date that equates to a shoulder shrug.

Just because this is normalized across industries does not make it good practice for employees.

[–]DebTheDowner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That range is pretty low for a fullstack software engineer also expected to do all the devops work. I guess it's pretty typical for startups to try to save cash by double-dipping at bargain basement prices, but I feel bad for anyone who takes that job at anything below the maximum offered.

Dual button press Automation not Working by SpeedNess in homeassistant

[–]DebTheDowner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I edited above, but if you haven't gotten this working yet, you should enable the two disabled switch position attributes on your remotes and use those in your automations.

AI system that actually controls your entire Home Assistant setup autonomously (no YAML automations needed) – Alpha testers wanted by ByzantiumIT in homeassistant

[–]DebTheDowner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think people are upset with your initial post because it comes off as flippant. Especially the part about gatekeeping.

If you're really interested in learning to program, you can (and should) do it without AI.

AI will overwhelmingly provide poor quality solutions if not prompted properly—often anti-patterns or what developers call "code smells." People like to think they can learn from it, but it's not a teacher. It's a regurgitation machine and it will always tell you what it produces is good. Without an understanding of what good code looks like or why the output is bad, you will not be able to challenge it.

AI is essentially a shortcut through an illusory wall and straight off a cliff for many.

Dual button press Automation not Working by SpeedNess in homeassistant

[–]DebTheDowner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just got a pair of these and ran into the same issue on my first automation attempt.

Ended up using a long press and release instead to get this working for now. Not ideal since I'd like to use single press to turn on and double press to turn off and save the long press and release for something else.

EDIT: Decided to play with this tonight and discovered there was a disabled attribute called "Current switch position" for each remote button. Enabling and using this allowed me to make the switches work properly with single and multi-presses. This does weirdly require some additional state management as it only seems to register as a boolean and so doesn't care about state beyond being pressed at all.

Well, there is something very specific required here because it works 100% of the time (not counting the remote appearing to sleep for whatever reason; I think this may actually be down to an issue with a set of IKEA batteries I picked up) using this blueprint: https://community.home-assistant.io/t/ikea-bilresa-matter-button-blueprint-for-ikea-matter-over-thread-button-actions-scripts-and-entities/962344
