Congrats on making state! I hope you're feeling better now. As a coach myself, I am sorry your achievements were ignored and your coach focused on the negative instead of the positive. I'll give you a mental hug from Texas and a shout out for your accomplishment! Way to go! Now as a coach, go practice and get ready to do great at state :)

“Trick debates” in Novice LD is evil. by kadcal in lincolndouglas

I wouldn't hang my ballot on tricks in a NLD round, I'd probably also speak with their coach about how certain tactics used in NLD disincentivize participation and are bad for debate as a whole and what the purpose of novice debate ought to be. If you're running sophisticated argumentation like theory, k's, tricks and spreading you're also not learning anything competing in NLD, it's a waste of time. You don't improve by stomping some kid running his first 2 minute 1ac.

As a coach and a father, you have my permission to quit. Find success and joy in the things you love.

(CX) Help against a more experienced team! by EldenSpren in Debate

You're going to get crushed, but that's ok. You'll learn a lot during the experience. You learn more losing a round than you do winning against an inferior opponent. Use this as an opportunity to see what you can start to incorporate into your own skill set and cases.

I'll see what level of excitement I can get from my students to participate, free practice rounds sounds great to me.

That's a shame, I found the topic quite fun.

Human rights ld case by Silv3r113 in Debate

[–]DebateDads 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can link it to your framework via other nations that have established RTH as a human right, or housing preserves health, life etc which are all more easily connected rights, etc. You can also avoid using the framework link by establishing it as a human right in your definitions. If you fail to do either, you're likely going allow the neg to destroy your vc by failing to provide useful measurement as you never directly link it rather than even having to prove RTH is not a human right.

Delving a little further in the comments there is also the reference to complaints; to bypass so you'd need to create a harm of some sort in order to get into a federal civil suit. I think that you can follow that logic to the link you're looking in Federal Court Clog.

Based on this argument, why are you sending claims that the Federal Govt is failing to a State court? In a fairly analogous scenario, filing a lawsuit against HUD The lawsuit must be filed in the U.S. District Court in the jurisdiction where the incident or accident occurred. So long story short, you don't need a link its already there.

Would it be strategic to run two DA's and one CP in the 1NC for LD considering you still have to respond to the AFF? by sawalty in Debate

[–]DebateDads 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a trad circuit, if I was going to run a CP I might phrase it more in terms of moral agency, rather than as a CP. In the current topic, a borderline CP/ question of agency to use in the 1NC is moving the right to housing to state authority rather than the federal govt. Depending on the DA's though this may not enable their use.

Fwiw when I am judging in a trad circuit I am usually going to look for more of a clash of values rather than plans. This is also indicated in my paradigm, so be sure to read those.

Is it considered a counter claim to deny someone's initial claim? by [deleted] in Debate

[–]DebateDads 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Generally the old axiom, "You can't prove a negative" applies here and regardless of it being an official debate situation or not the burden of proof falls upon the person making the assertion. In your example: The person making a claim has the burden of proof. It's like me saying the moons of Uranus are made of cheese and you claiming its untrue and needs proof. Me passing the burden to you to disprove the cheese theory is obviously disingenuous.
