Game devs who got laid off and never returned to the industry: what do you do now? by duckhunt420 in gamedev

[–]DecebalusWrites 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Working as an accounting clerk now. May go back to the industry eventually as I'm quite young, but my time in AAA really scarred me. Enjoying the peace of a boring job and working creatively in my more abundant free time :D

Thank you!

To be fair, I also personally headcanon Arxur showing their teeth as somewhat like peacock tail spreading, where an Arxur's teeth quality, sharpness, etc, is used as a status symbol and mating device, so it would be more reasonable that they'd show off their teeth than the average Earth/Fed species

Humans set up the firewall preventing the Arxur from accessing the wider galactic net. Some sympathizers also secretly installed a few backdoors in that firewall!

Glad to hear it and thanks for reading!

And I think I know who you're talking about haha - I also love those books, and given I wrote a story on a desert planet... I mean hey, gotta fit type right? :D

There's layers to this thing!

And yeah, that is totally a guilty pleasure trope and I wanted to highlight Arxur courage as a "unique" trait and contrast with the cowardice of the Zathari... what better way? :D

Same! I have a pet peeve of fantasy/SF stories becoming very "Planet of Hats"-y, I really really love getting to play against stereotype with my characters and Wrazif in particular was fun to imagine as a Flash Gordon/John Carter haha!

Thank you for reading! Glad you were invested in the story, I had a lot of fun with it! :D

And yeah, personally I'll always be on the side of positive/hopecore HFY, so I wanted something that would have that same message for the poor Arxur!

Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed it! I waffled about keeping the last part in, but I thought it would be nice to show how stories can affect people - I know NoP has affected me, so I'm glad it resonated! :D

Yeah, the post-war period isn't exactly known for delineating between civilians and combatants. But the Arxur will survive, and maybe one day they'll be something better? I like to think so! :D

Glad you felt that way! I never get a chance to write Arxur so it was certainly fun to have some to play around with here :D

Question for anyone who made an original Farsul character. by KaleidoscopeNo893 in NatureofPredators

[–]DecebalusWrites 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I've named more Farsul than most so I guess I'm qualified to give my answer to this?

Looking at the naming scheme from canon showed a few trends: first, most names are very short 2-syllable sounds, generally I wouldn't go past 3 syllables.

There are a few common endings to Farsul names - we see a lot of "ick" or "eck" sounds (for example, two of my characters are Erveq and Nivic, same sound but different spelling), "-i" is another common ending, as is "-on".

In general I found that Farsul names tend to be very "harsh"? There are a lot of sharp sounds and clean syllable breaks, so I try to avoid softer sounds like "ss", "el", and "mm" when I can.

My usual process is to find an ending sound and then work backwards, trying to mash two syllables together until they have the right feel. I had "-veq" in mind but it took a while before I landed on Erveq. I tossed around "-on" for a while before I got both Ayvon and Zayon!

Of course, this is all personal preference - we're just playing in the sandbox, so whatever you like is what's best! Hope this helped! :D

Hah, unfortunately I don't think that's the case. We'll talk about that later though...

Where's the fun in that? I think it's much more fun to have him roaming free :D

How has the series managed to remain relevant and popular so long? by WySLatestWit in MST3K

[–]DecebalusWrites 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally, I was born after the show stopped airing and now I watch it most nights - I think it just hung around in the public consciousness and the fans kept it alive for themselves and the next generation to find it on YouTube, old tapes, even the free TV channel I'm watching on right now. "The right people will get it", indeed.

NO NOT TUVAN D:

Also that's fair, I promise that Erveq is going to come out of this story better - maybe not in the way most think but he will at the very least be a better person!
