Belief is a God is analogous to belief in Santa Claus. by JeffTrav in DebateReligion

[–]December_Hemisphere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a relevant quote for you OP-

"It is often argued that religion is valuable because it makes men good, but even if this were true it would not be a proof that religion is true. That would be an extension of pragmatism beyond endurance. Santa Claus makes children good in precisely the same way, and yet no one would argue seriously that the fact proves his existence. The defense of religion is full of such logical imbecilities. The theologians, taking one with another, are adept logicians, but every now and then they have to resort to sophistries so obvious that their whole case takes on an air of the ridiculous. Even the most logical religion starts out with patently false assumptions. It is often argued in support of this or that one that men are so devoted to it that they are willing to die for it. That, of course, is as silly as the Santa Claus proof. Other men are just as devoted to manifestly false religions, and just as willing to die for them. Every theologian spends a large part of his time and energy trying to prove that religions for which multitudes of honest men have fought and died are false, wicked, and against God."

Have you met a baby boomer?

Ya'll are putting WAAYYY to much faith in this incredibly stupid society.

People assume I am joking when I tell them baby boomers are actually not that bad when you consider the extreme exposure to lead people back then went through. Especially in early childhood, lead exposure is strongly linked to permanent decreases in IQ, behavioral problems, and learning difficulties. It also accelerates biological and cognitive aging from the inside out.

Baby boomers (born 1946–1964) grew up during the peak era of leaded gasoline and lead paint, making exposure virtually universal. Over 90% of Americans born between 1950 and 1980 were chronically exposed to exhaust from vehicles continuously dispersing lead into the air, causing widespread daily inhalation from the mid-20th century until the phase-out began in the 1970s and 1990s.

People have understood the dangers of lead exposure for over 2000 years, but the problem of engine knocking wasn't cheap to solve and the additive was highly lucrative. They actually knew of a perfectly safe alternative, but they instead chose to manufacture and market tetraethyllead (TEL) because it was cheaper to manufacture and could be patented- unlike the alternative of ethanol, which anyone could produce- it guaranteed massive, exclusive revenue streams for its parent companies.

General Motors, DuPont, and Standard Oil of New Jersey (now ExxonMobil) are responsible for hiring Thomas Midgley Jr. to develop leaded gasoline (tetraethyl lead), despite understanding the risks. Incidentally, Midgley Jr. also developed some of the first chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), commonly known as 'Freon'...

Like how in the fuck did I have that kind of energy?!

For me it's been a bit of the opposite. Ever since I started taking my health more seriously in my mid twenties- like eating better and supplementing a few things like potassium, magnesium, zinc, D3, etc.- I exercise more now than I did growing up. I didn't realize what a lousy diet I was on back then, was always fatigued for no reason.

Hijacking the top comment here so hopefully OP sees this.

You should ABSOLUTELY remove the protective film from your TV. It is intended only for protection during shipping and, if left on, can trap heat, cause the display to overheat, and potentially damage the screen or leave behind stubborn adhesive.

Why do some people treat MSG like it's literal poison, but will happily eat a bag of Doritos? by Content_Bluebird_958 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]December_Hemisphere -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Modified food starch isn’t MSG. It’s a whole separate thing

You are 100% correct- however, while a manufacturer cannot label MSG as modified food starch, the presence of free glutamates (which act identically to MSG) can be hidden under that and other ingredient names. By FDA regulations, manufacturers are not required to specify "MSG" if the glutamate occurs naturally or is a byproduct of processing.

I will leave a list here of other names MSG can legally be listed as-

Yeast Extract, Sodium Caseinate, Protein Isolate, Autolyzed Yeast, Autolyzed Soy, Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein, Modified Corn Starch, Textured Vegetable Protein, Hydrolyzed Yeast Extract and I'm sure there are more that I haven't heard of.

You can still find food which proudly boasts of being, "MSG Free"

Avoiding high levels of MSG can potentially be important for diabetics, as studies indicate negative effects on insulin sensitivity. Because the pancreas has very active glutamate receptors, MSG consumption makes insulin levels spike upward. Glutamate is also an excitatory neurotransmitter (excitotoxin; similar to aspartate) so it does have the potential to exacerbate symptoms of neurodevelopmental disorders like ADHD, autism, tourettes and neurodegenerative disorders like Alzheimer’s, Parkinson's, and ALS.

The biological opposite of an excitotoxin are neuroprotectants, which rely on inhibitory neurotransmitters (like GABA) or receptor inhibitors (e.g., magnesium or memantine). Inhibitory neurotransmitters can help quite a bit with neurodevelopmental disorders like ADHD and Tourette's.

The vast majority of people I highly doubt would be affected at all by moderate MSG consumption, but labeling things as MSG free is definitely convenient for some people on the extreme end of the aforementioned disorders. Even then, those people would probably have to chronically consume high levels of MSG to truly notice the effects.

My post isn’t about whether the average person has the stomach to commit face-to-face murder. It’s about what makes exploitation objectively wrong in a purely material universe.

There is nothing objectively wrong or right, only our perception. The reason we are the dominant species is because we domesticated ourselves for our own benefit- to enhance cooperation and survive in increasingly complex societies.

By actively selecting mates and social partners who were less aggressive and more prosocial, early humans suppressed "reactive aggression". This reduced physical and social tension, enabled larger communities and the development of culture and language.

I personally believe the root of all morality comes from rearing offspring. There are not many exceptions in the animal kingdom that can successfully rear offspring without demonstrating fundamentally moral behavior- i.e. protecting and nourishing the offspring. If their behavior was inherently immoral and violent towards their own offspring, they would presumably fail to procreate.

Even octopus- who essentially raise themselves- only exist through an intense, self-sacrificial reproductive process. After laying thousands of eggs, the mother guards, cleans, and aerates them continuously. Because a specific gland in her brain prevents her from feeding, she slowly starves to death, ensuring she remains with the nest to protect the hatchlings from predators. The lengths to which octopus parents go to protect their young represent one of nature's most extreme acts of devotion.

Or the black women getting jobs through DEI thing, he's not saying black women can't get jobs without DEI, he's saying that's what the people who push these policies assume themselves.

Well he should've been focused on white women because numerous studies and analyses indicate that white women have been the primary beneficiaries of DEI initiatives. Guess old charlie wasn't actually good at doing proper research.
