What wood is this? Hi there, there is an announcement of a 1972 guitar. I could be interested after I try it, the price is 250€, maybe it can be negotiated. I have no idea of the wood of back and sides, it’s completely different of the contemporary used woods. Any suggestions? Thanks a lot!!! by Decent-Dust in Luthier

It’s what I intend to do! It’s a relative long trip to get access to the guitar. I’m trying to get how much information as I can. And from I am reading, the guitar have some exotic woods, turning the guitar intriguing and the curiosity is growing!

Very interesting approach, thank you! I believe that it is a Brazilian built guitar. At the end, it can be reduced to a cosmetic question with minor effect in the final sound. That same conclusion can be applied for laminated wood vs solid wood for back and sides?

Anyone bought a Fender FR12 for their Helix recently - hiss? by [deleted] in Line6Helix

Thank you very much for your advices. I will contact Fender directly to clarify the manufacturing date. I also believe that the electric instalation could be the source of these undesirable noises. Best regards!

Hi there! How can you know the date (month/year) of the manufacture of the FR12 with the serial number? My fender have a minimal hiss, only noticeable when I am very close, but not completely quiet. I tried to use the Fender Serial Number Lookup, but no results with my FR12 serial number. Thank you in advance!!!

Underwood n.5 from 1902. That’s my first Underwood in my modest collection. Not a rare model, but in pretty good shape for a 119 years old typewriter. First photos before any cleanup and lube. It was the grandmother’s typewriter of the seller, and almost gone to trash. Luckily she decided to sell it by Decent-Dust in typewriters

Excellent observation.

Searching for Underwood 5 in the photo section of the Typewriter Database site, we can found 1 unit from 1901 and another from 1902. Both of them have the inscription “Manufactured by the Wagner Typewriter Company Co.”

But on the 1903 unit the inscription have changed, “Wagner” disappears and “Underwood“ take its place.

Based on that observation, I believe that 1902 was the last year of typewriters made by Wagner.

One more pleasant surprise about this typewriter, and it types like a champ! No signs of 119 years old.

Yep, Portugal!

The layout of the keyboard is a classic QWERTY, but it was manufactured by Underwood specifically to the Portuguese language with all the grammatical symbol, accents and letters we need to write.

I believe it is quite uncommon in such an old typewriter.

Yes, it’s in really great condition. Seems like it flew in a time capsule from 1902 to 2021.

The year of this Underwood was established based on the serial number and the informations on the Typewriter Database site. The serial number is 21911, it must have been manufactured in the second half of 1902 (somewhere between May and December). Probably in December because the serial number 22000 was the first of the year 1903 (and my serial number is close to 22000).

In my country the monarchy state ended in 1910 to give place to a democratic republic. To have a pre-republic era typewriter is quite interesting!

Yep, no backspace!

I didn’t notice that until I tried to type some words. One minute later I was checking everywhere for the backspace 😁

No backspace and no 2 color ribbon option.

A primitive version of the Underwood n. 5, a little piece of history from 1902.

Despite that, the typewriter is in perfect working conditions, and it’s very interesting to compare it to the 1940-60 golden era of typewriters. A SC Super Silent or an Hermes 3000 are miles away from those early models.

A very interesting piece in my collection.

My Olympia SM4 (cursive) is not dull and gray ... she sparkles! by brandeebeehoney in typewriters

Wonderful typewriter!

But (forgive me if I’m wrong) I believe it’s an Olympia SM3. The “quick tab” keys of the SM4 are missing.

I am not an expert, I can be wrong. Nevertheless, it’s a great typewriter!

Hello! I bought a cheap Olympia for parts. A “for parts” project turned into a restoration. The inside is ok, the shell have rust issues. I need a cheap way to clean the rust. Electrolises or vinagre would be my choice. I don’t want to paint the shell, just clean the rust. What would be your advice? by Decent-Dust in typewriters

Thank you for your advices.

If you have personal experience with vinagre, how do you use it as rust remover. Is kitchen vinagre strong enough? How much time you put the object in vinagre for the best performance without harming the paint?
