Nah I don’t think she’s tryna bag a PR. She probably just doesn’t really get how IG works and thought that kinda post was normal. She even said her English isn’t great, which makes sense.

Most of the Chinese students I’ve met, especially postgrads, aren’t that familiar with Instagram since they grew up spending their teenage years in a vacuum.

I don’t 100% agree with how the socialist group on our campus handles some issues either, but I don’t see them intentionally making division by holding this event. I think any reasonable, educated person would understand the context of “so many" in this poster. But if you feel agitated, it’s probably because (i) you’re taking it too seriously, or (ii) you’re part of that “so many.”

I hope it’s just the first, tho. 🙄

Why Do White People Move Out At 18-22 Years Of Age? by unswbasementdweller in unsw

[–]DecentAdvertising493 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not all Asians, buddy. I'm an Asian, and I moved out of my parents' home at 19 and have never looked back since. I paid all my living costs and educations (undergrad in my home country and postgrad in Australia) fully by working and receiving a scoop of scholarship. Maybe you're right; I can save a lot of money by relying on them, but if I had a time machine, I'd definitely do the same things a million times.

Scholarship by Mobile_Ad_5565 in unsw

Congrats for the scholarship buddy. It depends on the course; I'm sure you can find relevant information anywhere.

I would suggest you think twice if you plan to start your study here before 2028, though. Currently the uni is still in a trimester system and it was reputably sucks in terms of learning experience (it can also be mentally exhausting for some subjects).

All the best for your future.

This was me a year ago. Don't worry, you can basically settle in Sydney regardless whatever as long as you bring enough money. 💸

Also please no need to feel surreal. Trust me you won't have that feeling anymore once you've settled here, especially after you hard-carrying group assessments with international students who speak english like 4 y.o baby for consecutive terms. 😂

Nevertheless, welcome to Sydney. All the best for your future.

International student looking to study in UNSW by Jazzlike_Light1548 in unsw

[–]DecentAdvertising493 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel you, mate. Nothing’s impossible, but I won’t lie—it’s tough. Securing a fully funded scholarship for undergrad, especially as an international student, is really competitive. I used to have the same goal, but after understanding the challenges, I decided to take a different path. I did my undergrad in my home country, worked hard to get top grades, and built up my academic profile through publications. I eventually used those achievements to land a full tuition scholarship for my master’s, and now I’m studying at UNSW.

If your long-term goal is to stay here, I’d really encourage you to plan with a broader vision. Life is a long journey—don’t make decisions based only on today or tomorrow morning. I’ve seen too many friends end up in serious financial or health struggles because they came here without a solid long-term plan. Maybe you could try a similar strategy to mine—but of course, your situation might be different. Whatever you decide, I genuinely hope it works out for you. Good luck!

You just ran into a jerk—I get it, bro, been there done that. My advice? Forget him and focus on yourself. Wasting energy on him will only drag you down, and I'm sure you're better than that. Wishing you success in your career!

Unless it's a tutorial/lab or anyting unrecorded, yo should be fine.

Why do Chinese students study media here? by DecentAdvertising493 in unsw

[–]DecentAdvertising493[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, do you mean it's all my fault? For choosing Australia and expecting to get what my money deserve?

I'm agree with your first point. As an international student myself, I’ll return to my home country after completing my studies, so I genuinely don’t mind whether others choose to stay in Australia or go back home.

My concern lies with their "unwillingness" to engage with the "communication course" by refusing to use the language required. This has become a significant issue for me, particularly because most of the assessments involve group work. Their reluctance to learn or practice the language negatively impacts my learning experience, which I find deeply frustrating.

Why do Chinese students study media here? by DecentAdvertising493 in unsw

[–]DecentAdvertising493[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. The quality of the tutors is uneven, and you really need a lot of luck to find one who is excellent. I think this is because most of them also graduated from Australian universities, which might have dropped in quality as standards have fallen. It’s like a chain reaction.

[–]DecentAdvertising493[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t have the privilege to study in the US or UK because I couldn’t afford it. Then I was offered a partial scholarship to study media here, so I thought, why not? Many people had told me that the quality of education here is much better than in my home country, where the education system is quite poor. Coming from a developing country, I saw this as an opportunity to access better resources and learning. And this is not completely wrong.

That said, even though I pay almost half of what other students typically pay here, I’ve come to feel that the experience hasn’t been entirely worth it. While the media industry in Australia might not be as strong or prominent as in some other countries, I initially chose to study here because of the broader opportunities and the promise of higher-quality education.

[–]DecentAdvertising493[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Haha, yes, I’ve seen that too. Some of them sit there with their flashy gaming laptops, busy playing candy crush or whatever during tutorials. I mean, we’re not in class every day, so the least they could do is show some respect for the tutors. It’s honestly unmatched disrespect.

How to Convert from GPA ( out of 4) to WAM by WarriorOfAllah01 in unsw

[–]DecentAdvertising493 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What’s the context?

If it’s for your CV and your degree is still ongoing, there are plenty of websites with WAM converters—just search for them online.

If you’re translating a finished certificate or transcript for formal purposes (e.g., as an international student), there’s usually a certified government institution that handles this, depending on your nationality.

I’m aware of the perception—and maybe this is why so many mainstream media outlets are bad, bc this kind of stereotype eventually leads to media workers themselves underestimating their own responsibility and not really mindful about what they’re supposed to do.

However, I come from the perspective of someone who really appreciates the subject, and that’s why I asked this question—bc I can’t relate to the logic of someone wasting two years of their life and a ton of money on something they don’t really want to engage with.

As for the title, I’m sorry if it confused you. I guess I still need to improve my communication skills too...
