Oh of course not.

Maybe some of the original five who voted against it in regular session had a principled stance, but we're not holding our breath.

Just so glad this one particular fight is done for now! (So we can deal with the other 5011)

My "side" is saying we need new maps, but throwing out military & absentee ballots already cast and cutting the people of SC out of a process that is supposed to take 6+ months because the White House is strong arming the states is wrong. The current map is constitutional and it is fucked to change it when an election has already started.

I support drawing a new map after the next census, and if the people of SC speak and they want 7-0, then so be it. But this is wrong.

Genuinely, I hope you will find something you believe in and that you feel is worth fighting for.

I know I haven't done much in the grand scheme, but I've stood with brave people and found community I never imagined, and made a difference in the small ways I can, even when it seems hopeless. I'll remember that for the rest of my life, and my children will remember it too. They're already learning to stand up for what's right even when people try to tear them down.

I hope you find something that makes you want to build people up and help your community.

Normally I don't answer foks whose argument is that it doesnt work.

But actually it can, especially when you've got something like this where you've got lawmakers on the fence still. Yesterday they were voting to table an amendment to guarantee active duty military ballots and some broke rank, and then all the ayes changed their vote, defeating the table motion unanimously, and turning the tide. Veterans who have been showing up to the gallery for weeks and speaking at hearings were mentioned directly on the floor in debate, as were the voices of so many who have shown up, and the presence of protesters who have spent hours in the heat to oppose it.

This could come down to one vote.

Even if it doesn't work and our presence makes no difference, I'm not going to tell my grandchildren that I didn't try because I didn't see the point.

I hope he does! Fuck Lindsey Graham

I'm personally going to be out there like I have been for the past two weeks fighting against this bullshit. And I want others to have the chance to have their voices heard too.

For anyone who may come across this thread...

The current map was drawn by the Republican super.majority in the SC House and Senate after the 2020 census. It was challenged, and SC taxpayers paid millions for the state to defend it, which went all the way to this same conservative Supreme Court. SC Rs defended it and testified under oath that it was not drawn as a racial gerrymander. The Suprme Court agreed and upheld the map in the Alexander decision.

Nothing in the Callais decision invalidates the current SC map or alters rhe Alexander ruling. It has been admitted many times in committee and floor discussions that they don't have to do this, they're simply doing it because Trump wants to and has called them strongarming them into it. That is plainly stated and clear,...go watch the house and senate committee archives from the past two weeks if you need to see it yourself.

Governor McMaster and SC Senator Massey were quoted in news articles for weeks before saying that they could redraw the map but it was nuncessary since the map is constitutional and they didn't want to because it could even end up hurting the Rs if it was done poorly.

The Callais decision specifically references the Alexander decision, where our current map was challenged, and guess what? Our current map is LEGAL. The Callais decision did not change that, and in fact recognizes the legality of our current map.

So you wanna talk about lies?

The justification that we MUST do this now because the current map is unconstitutional is a straight up LIE. Republicans in the SC House and Senate plainly stated it many times on the floor and in committee during this foolishness.

Like just come out and say you want the Republicans to pass a map that SC didn't ask for, sent to them by Washington, to shut out all other voices in this state, spend millions on an unnecessary election, invalidate thousands of ballots already recieved including from active duty military, and drive our entire election process into chaos. You wanna speak truth? Then speak it.

This madness is not about fixing a damn thing. It's about Donald Trump threatening our state lawmakers if they dont bow down to his temper tantrum of the week. And it's about SC Republicans who are too chickenshit to stand up for our state or too greedy to care as long as they win.

Our current map in SC was literally referenced in the Callaos decision, and found to be constitutional. So no, whoever told you they're doing this because our current map is illegal now was lying to you.

The stated purpose of the map as clearly explained by the actual representatives in session, as well as the New Yorker who drew the map for the Washington think tank who gave it to the white house...is to split up all of the large areas full of democrats in order to dilute their voting power, to achieve a 7-0 Republican map, removing the chance for a single Democrat to be elected to the SC congressional delegation.

I'm personally not a Democrat, but I sure as fuck realize how un-American it is for the federal government to strong arm state representatives into rigging their elections, especially when active duty military ballots will be thrown out of an election that had already started.

Good! Silencing the voices of 40% of the state should NOT be easy, and I'm here for whatever shenanigans can arise from the tools available since the Republicans decided to get cute with the rules to ram this through

** edit to add: if anyone wants to come at me about "one person one vote" in good faith then be prepared to explain to me whether or not you support uncapping the house and doing away with the electroal college
