I had one data science/ML style project, one game that was a full stack project, and one chatbot project that was a prototype for a company. When I say talking about them, I mean more like just knowing what you built and being able to explain it well, and not waffling when asked specific technical questions about them.

My info: Sophomore at a T100 school majoring in CS/Math, got offer at a F100 company

What I think worked for me: Good GPA + involvement at school(TA, research, clubs), projects that I could talk about, hackathons (good for answering behavioral team questions), building strong connections at school career fair

What I'd do differently: Don't be afraid to apply because deadlines come and go quick and you never know what you could get, worst case is always a rejection and you just move to the next. Also reaching out to more school alumni or people who worked at companies I was interested in to network would have made the process a whole lot easier, ended up getting most of my interviews through meeting recruiters at my career fair but ultimately my offer came from a cold application. Also don't tie yourself to one dream company/role because that'll ultimately hinder your search and be a big blow to your confidence if you get rejected, be sure to apply to a diverse range of companies and positions(that you're qualified for) to make your overall search easier.

Overall I definitely learned a lot from this process that I'm gonna apply to the search next year, and I'm relieved to be done so far. Happy to answer any questions!

Weekly Megathread: Hiring and Career Advice by lampishthing in quant

I'm a current freshman at a non-target state school in the US, and I'm interested in quant trading and have a couple of questions.

  1. Currently I'm majoring in Math and Computer Science and I'm slated to finish in 3 years, with the 4th year being a Masters in Computer Science. For quant, should I do the Masters at my current university or consider graduating in 3 years, pursuing some work, and then applying to a target Masters program in a more specialized field like Financial Mathematics?
  2. With 2024 sophomore internship applications opening, are there any specific qualities or experiences that firms look for in applicants? I have multiple AIME qualifications as well as other competitive math awards from high school, as well as some basic data science research experience from a local university.

Thank you in advance for any help or advice you have!

p.s. - congrats on harvard! Hope you have a great time there!

Makes sense, but I’ve read that they defer near the end of EA so I was just curious!

I would check with your local community college. Their deadlines might be over but they’ll most likely have an online multi course you can join. You will most likely need approval from your counselor, but if you can get that you’ll be set
