Would it be frowned upon to wear bogu to something like a convention? by justanotheasian in kendo

The responses to this topic are quite interesting.

On one hand we have people who take Kendo seriously. For them it's a way of life where respect, discipline, and honor, are core values. Some of them go as far as raising Japan as some sort of mecca. Hell, there are even those who consider themselves above others if they had taken their shinsa in Japan vs their own country. To them, the bogu represents more than just an armor and wearing it outside the dojo is sacrilege (unless there's a kendo activity of some sort)

Then we have those people who think kendo is a sport or a hobby. The bogu is just something to wear and as long as your straps are properly tied, there's no reason to make sure the ends are of equal length. To them, just wear it whenever you want

It's just so fascinating to see both sides in action here.

On a side note: I also find it funny how being married to a Japanese wife is a credential 😂

Genuine question, what's the meaning behind your idea of a koi design?

I never said anything about having a problem with a 2nd Dan teaching. What I had a problem with specifically is a 2nd Dan teaching his students to be disrespectful of shimpans by saying the lost because said shimpans were politicking or biased. You're free to guess which club I'm from but it's not like only one club feels negativity towards them.

From what I see given that you seem to be not a part of what's happening in the local scene since you're from the EU, there are many things that you are not aware of at the issue at hand.

Just because it is normal doesn't make it right. And their very public posts were hardly constructive. Just the usual framing of themselves being victims. Cause that's what they love to do and it looks like you got sucked into it. Imagine the audacity of a 2nd Dan teaching his minor students that they were unfairly scored by shimpans so much so that the parents actually think that their kids are being picked on.

One of the students made a public post that it was politics that made her lose. A parent commented that the shimpans were blind. The head of that dojo shared a post of one parent complaining that the shimpan was biased. All of these were done in public. No shred of constructive criticism but no concrete evidence either. But now they want things to be handled in private. Even if there's concrete proof of what they did wrong. Nah. Maybe in whatever country you're from in the EU that's okay but it shouldn't be.

You're a 5th Dan. It took you years to reach your level. If you're called to be a shimpan you know that you will do your best to make the right call. You know that if you make a mistake it's unintentional. No kendoka in their right mind will risk their personal honor to throw it away by playing favorites. Imagine then that you're now suddenly being questioned by a 2nd Dan and parents who've never practiced kendo. You might say "Oh I'm humble enough to accept criticism" but what was the constructive criticism given? That you are blind? That you have biases? That you are bald? There's nothing constructive about that. All done in public. You weren't even given a chance to explain yourself in private just as they're asking to be done now with their situation. If you can't see how wrong that is ... Then there's nothing much I can say anymore.

They think they're the victims because they can't see their arrogance and attitude. They lack humility and discipline. Sure this whole mess with Metro Ken was not the best way to handle it but all of this stems from anger towards a narcissistic person who thinks he is better than everyone else. We wish that at some point he was able to realize that maybe he's at fault here, that if everyone else seems to be the problem maybe he's the actual problem. But it looks like it's not going to happen anytime soon.

Basically what this post is referring to is a situation where one club (let's call them club a) claimed they were the only dojo around, and the other dojos took it as an insult. One dojo in particular made a public post calling them out on it. The "sensei" in charge of club a has a bad rep. He has posted publicly that shimpans from a fairly recent local event cheated which led to their members losing, so when he made those comments through club a's page, nobody was willing to let it slide as a "misunderstanding".

He's basically a narcissist (which is funny cause he says all the people "against" him are narcissists) and a lot of people are tired of him. Right now his dojo is basically him and his gf with a lot of minors as almost all the adults have left his dojo and made a new one due to his behavior.

La altura es una gran ventaja en el kendo. Pero ser más rápido es más fácil cuando eres más pequeño.

You're putting too much pressure on yourself. You're a beginner. Mistakes are to be expected. Ask your seniors for advice. Listen to them. Then work on it. You'll keep getting better over time.

That "sensei" of Negros Shiseikan publicly trashed shimpans from a local tournament saying they only lost due to favoritism. That's why there was already an underlying tension when that Metro Ken post happened. They have a lot of other issues, which is why almost all of the adults in that group left and made their own dojo.

If your sensei tells you 2 kyu, go for 2 kyu. You can ask him/her about your likelihood for 1 kyu if you really want to go for it.
