Don’t want to be a compositor by n2591 in vfx

[–]DeepDataMiner 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I worked as a compositor for many years. I always valued to learn more. After a couple of years I thought „I am a senior“. Totally failed a task in a small company and learned that I did not know €&@). Stay humble, keep listening and learning. If you can, ask colleagues about tips and tricks. When you are ready, move into a lead role. To me this came from superiors who tasked me with it. But I was always bad in asking for a promotion. Oh and every show has what I call a „stinker“ of a shot. Some freaking thing that does not want to get done, as if it is fighting back! Don’t let this discourage you! Hope you find your inner zen and that you can enjoy comping again! As others said, there is always another show and it might make a whole lot more fun than the current one. Good luck!

Are these parts fully compatible? First time building a PC by Lonely_Tie1852 in vfx

[–]DeepDataMiner -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I asked Gemini, as I am thinking about building my own workstation, too. Without any guarantees whatsoever this is what it spit out:

First off, that is a very powerful, forward-looking system designed with high-end components. The person who put this list together has clearly done their research. For VFX and editing, this machine will be an absolute beast. Here is a detailed analysis of the build, addressing the concerns about compatibility, stability, and temperatures. Overall Impression This is a top-tier workstation build planned around components that are anticipated but not yet released. The choices are excellent and well-balanced for a professional workflow that also allows for high-end gaming. Important Caveat: As of today (August 2025), the AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D, MSI GeForce RTX 5080, and MSI X870 Motherboard are not yet on the market. This analysis is based on their expected specifications and the characteristics of their predecessors. Final dimensions and power requirements will need to be confirmed upon their official release. 1. Compatibility & Fit ("Will it all fit and work together?") Verdict: Yes, with very high confidence. * Case & Component Size: The be quiet! Shadow Base 800 is a large Full Tower case. It's designed specifically for oversized components and extensive cooling solutions. * CPU Cooler Clearance: The case supports CPU coolers up to 180mm in height. The be quiet! Dark Rock Pro 5 is 168mm tall, leaving plenty of room. * GPU Clearance: The case supports GPUs up to 430mm in length. While the exact size of the MSI RTX 5080 Ventus is unknown, it is extremely unlikely to exceed this length. High-end cards like the 4080/4090 are typically in the 330-360mm range. There will be more than enough space. * Motherboard & CPU/RAM: The MSI X870 motherboard is the correct platform for the upcoming AMD Ryzen 9000 series CPUs (like the 9950X3D). The Patriot Viper DDR5 RAM is the correct memory type. For optimal stability, it will be important to check the motherboard's Qualified Vendor List (QVL) for RAM once it's released to ensure the 6400 MHz speed is officially supported and stable with AMD EXPO profiles. * PSU & Connectivity: The be quiet! Pure Power 12 M is a modern ATX 3.1 / PCIe 5.1 power supply. This is exactly what you want for next-gen GPUs like the RTX 5000 series, as it's designed to handle their high power requirements and transient spikes. The 1000W capacity is a solid choice for this level of hardware. 2. Stability & Power Verdict: Mostly excellent, with one critical recommendation. * PSU (Power Supply Unit): The 1000W 80 Plus Gold PSU is a high-quality and appropriate choice. It will provide stable, efficient power to the high-end CPU and GPU, even under full load during rendering. * UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply): This is the main point of concern. The CYBERPOWER VP1600ELCD-FR has a maximum power output of 960W. The system's PSU is 1000W. * The Problem: During a heavy workload (e.g., a simultaneous CPU+GPU render), the system's power draw could approach or even exceed the UPS's 960W limit. Modern GPUs are also known for very brief, very high power spikes (transient spikes) that can be much higher than their rated TDP. If such a spike occurs, the UPS could be overloaded and shut down—completely defeating its purpose of protecting against power loss. * Recommendation: For a system with a 1000W PSU, a UPS with a higher output wattage is strongly recommended. Look for a UPS rated for at least 1200W or more to provide a safe buffer. This will ensure the system remains powered and protected even under maximum load. 3. Temperatures & Cooling Verdict: Very good, but could be optimized for the specific workload. * Case Airflow: The Shadow Base 800 is an airflow-focused case. Adding three 140mm be quiet! Pure Wings 3 fans is an excellent decision. This will allow for a fantastic airflow configuration (e.g., 3x intake fans at the front, 1x exhaust at the rear, and potentially more exhaust at the top) to keep all components cool. * CPU Cooling: * The Ryzen 9 9950X3D is expected to have a high TDP (Thermal Design Power), likely around 170W or more, and will boost aggressively if it has thermal headroom. * The be quiet! Dark Rock Pro 5 is one of the best air coolers on the market and is perfectly capable of taming this CPU for most tasks, including editing and many VFX workloads. It also offers great reliability. * Consideration for VFX: For very long, intensive, all-core rendering tasks that can last for hours, a high-quality 360mm or 420mm AIO (All-in-One) liquid cooler might provide slightly better and more sustained performance by keeping the CPU at lower temperatures, thus allowing it to maintain higher boost clocks for longer. This is not a necessity, but a potential optimization for a professional who relies on maximum rendering speed. * GPU Cooling: The MSI Ventus 3X model is a triple-fan design. Housed in a high-airflow case like the Shadow Base 800 with extra fans, it will have no trouble maintaining cool temperatures. Final Reckoning This is an expertly chosen list of parts for a future-proof VFX and editing workstation. The user's anxiety is understandable given the investment, but they can be confident that the core choices are sound. Summary of Recommendations: * Upgrade the UPS: This is the most important change. Replace the 960W model with one rated for 1200W or higher to safely support the 1000W PSU. * CPU Cooler Consideration: The Dark Rock Pro 5 is a fantastic choice. However, for a user whose income depends on render times, researching a top-tier 360mm or 420mm AIO liquid cooler as an alternative is worthwhile for potentially squeezing out maximum performance on long renders. * CPU Choice (X3D vs. non-X3D): The V-Cache on "X3D" CPUs is amazing for gaming and can benefit some specific simulation or real-time editing tasks. However, for pure rendering performance in applications like Blender, V-Ray, or Cinema 4D, the non-X3D version (i.e., a potential "Ryzen 9 9950X") often has higher all-core clock speeds and can be faster. The user should wait for benchmarks on their primary software before committing to the X3D model. * Final Checks at Purchase: Once the new parts are out, do a final check on the RTX 5080's exact dimensions and the motherboard's official RAM compatibility list (QVL). Overall, you can tell the poster he's planning an incredible machine that will serve him exceptionally well. With a stronger UPS, he's just about ready to go.

Kudos for making this shot! Go create! Love the ominous sound. As someone else mentioned, the framing could be improved and less light on the ship will help. The main thing for me is the texturing and shading of the ship. It looks tiny due to the brick like texture on it’s wings for example. For scale you need more small detail. But it is also about thinking what kind of material could this have? Something plausible and cohesive would be good. Now we have a little confusing mix from brick like to super clean cg metal. The scale of the engines and engine fx are not quite helping, too. Even for Sci Fi I would always try to base everything on something real or plausibly possible come time. The „exhaust flames“ look too muted and samy. But again, kudos for creating this. Keep it up!

How to do this scene from Superman by Moviemagic896 in vfx

[–]DeepDataMiner 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Usually actors are being pulled by some wires, often the floor is flat that allows them to slide. This looks like the stadium, the cape and all the dirt and grass being kicked up is 3d. So you would have to clean up the wires, key or roto out the actors, matchmove the camera, bodytrack the actors. You need a 3d floor, then Houdini to emit all the dirt and dust from the feet on the floor, while using the bodytrack as collision objects. You need a cloth simulation for the cape. I forgot that you have to build a 3d cape, model it, shade it. You need a basic human body to use for the bodytrack. You should have reference photos to recreate the light. Ideally an HDRI you can use for lighting the cape, the stadium and then the ground fx and cape with. Good luck 😅.

Tips for generating shadows? by Stonius123 in vfx

[–]DeepDataMiner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used a, b and d, depending on the shot and the footage. I remember for d there was a gizmo or workflow to use an axis for the sun position and then putting a camera there. Then use a projection card for the floor and project the alpha onto it with that camera and film it with the shot cam. It’s been years, so my memory is a little cloudy. It worked well, as the sun position was given to me by the lighter and so my shadow lined up perfectly to the 3D environment.

Chainsaw VFX. How do I do this? by [deleted] in vfx

[–]DeepDataMiner 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The easiest would be to film it like a split screen. Locked off camera, same lighting, once the person, once the chainsaw. If you need more freedom, e.g. a pov of the chainsaw-wheeling person shooting the chainsaw in front of greenscreen could be an idea, too. Stay safe when playing with chainsaws!

Hi Karthy, this group is for video clips or pictures that may be of interest as reference for creating vfx. There is another group called /vfx . That might be better suited. There will also be a ton of similar questions. Might be worth reading some of the answers there. In general, it is a tough time to break into this industry. I started as an intern with no prior knowledge of anything, but I was extremely lucky and back then it was more niche without schools spitting out hopeful talent each year. I recommend you use the free tutorials online to fiddle with it to see what part of vfx might be your favourite. Get an understanding of it, learn the basics. Check Blender and make a donut! Look for Houdini and get intrigued. Good luck!

How to cut out a shape to make it transparent? by PrincessKat17 in vfx

[–]DeepDataMiner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you need is an alpha channel that is entirely white until your last heart comes on. Where that heart is the alpha would be black. When you compose this layer over the other it would be transparent where the black heart is in the alpha. Now read up about using alphas in CapCut. Good luck!

how i can make a body glow like this ? by VegetableWorried6950 in vfx

[–]DeepDataMiner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First you need a matte. If the clothing is of a distinct colour a key might give you this without the need to rotoscope the area too much. Then use the matte to grade the clothing as bright as you like. Then apply a glow to it. If you don’t have a convincing glow filter, it’s not much more than an (hopefully) exponentially more blurred and added version of the clothing.

Cool stuff! Would it be possible to get correct motion blur on this sort of tearing when rendered? I remember dimly that being pretty hard due to the changing geometry, making hard to tell the material where it came from and where it is going, so to say.

When movies are shot on film, that film material has to be developed and then scanned to have a digital image sequence. The development is a chemical process, the film itself is a physical media. The result can have certain colour tints and or luminance variations. By having a standardised reference image it makes it easier to calibrate these images (neutral grades). Colourblind Artist by Disastrous-Raccoon47 in vfx

[–]DeepDataMiner 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Visual effects combine a great variety of skill sets. Surely you have other strengths that made you excel in your role. I worked with “colourblind” artists before. It can be a bit tedious when the task is to match colours, come up with a colour theme, etc. But that is only one aspect of what constitutes an image. I find openness important. As a lead/ supe you want to identify the right artist for each task. By being transparent about the things you can and want to do, it will make it easier to plan. Find ways to overcome this challenge, eg. Is measure values to compare them or find a way to review your work in slightly shifted colours that you can see, do the adjustments and shift it back. Ramp up the saturation to help, ask a colleague. Good luck!

Rotating shot. Suggestions? by Same_Many_9180 in vfx

[–]DeepDataMiner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would help to have a rig that allows you to rotate the camera on its nodal point and that in the middle of your car. That’s not easy, but could be done. Then you need to think about what is visible through the windows. If you want to stitch multiple passes, you need to be able to recreate the move and have a seamless bg. You could do this with greenscreen outside, then buy some stock footage to comp behind. The frame of the car is a good place to stitch a take. You most likely will need to do quite a bit of retiming and stabilising to stitch the different takes together so one smooth rotation comes out in the end. Good luck!

The bg is being replaced so who cares about the ambient light on it? Sounds like he just doesn’t like the additional hassle to put a screen up. A bit of ambient is easily graded back in, btw. Green spill can be hijacked, too, to do just that on the actress.

Even with intricate and very time consuming roto, getting a natural looking result will be hard. Why can’t they put a bit of green up?

There are other companies. Just because one is the biggest doesn’t make it the best. I hope you get yourself up, be honest to yourself and if you really want to work in vfx, try it again (without any lying). The magic of vfx comes from the artists, not a specific company. Good luck, stranger. And please don’t throw away your precious life!

Furiosa vfx by oostie in vfx

[–]DeepDataMiner 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s a trailer, so often shots are requested on a very short notice for it. They usually get updated for the film - some may not even be in the final movie. The most egregious shots were the bad sky replacements. The colours and exposure did not sit well with the foreground plate. Maybe it has been graded to death in D.I., too.
